Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A Tejútrendszerünk és részeinek keletkezése és fejlődése az Ősrobbanás utáni első két milliárd évben még ma is a
csillagászat egyik legérdekesebb kutatási területei közé tartozik. Gömbhalmazok és a Galaxisunk halójában a ma ismert
legöregebb lévő csillagok találhatók, és mi a kémiai összetételük tanulmányozásának segítségével tervezzük felfedni a
Tejútrendszer korai fejlődését. A gömbhalmazok kialakulásának kulcsa egy olyan egységes abundancia (melyet az APOGEE-2 égboltfelmérő program biztosít) és fotometriai információs adatbázis létrehozása, mely tartalmazza a Tejútrendszer összes, Földről jól megfigyelhető és fényes gömbhalmazát. A kutatási tervünk e adatbázis használatán alapul, mely során meg kívánjuk magyarázni a spektroszkópiai és fotometriai módon felfedezett csillagpopulációk (és ezzel a Tejútrendszer legöregebb csillagai) kialakulásának körülményeit.

A fő céljaink tehát a következők:
1. Gömbhalmazokban található csillagok kémiai összetételének részletes elemzése a Tejútrendszer korai fejlődésének
tanulmányozása céljából.
2. A szín-fényesség diagram által talált gömbhalmazbeli csillagpopulációk összetételének megismerése, és ebből a különböző populációk keletkezésének megértése.
3. A jelenleg legnagyobb infravörös, nagyfelbontású spektroszkópiai égboltfelmérő programban (APOGEE-2) való aktív részvétel.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

A kutatás a következő fő kérdésekre keresi a választ:

1. Hogyan keletkeztek a Tejútrendszer első csillagai?
2. Mi a kapcsolat a csillagok fényessége és a kémiai összetétel alapján talált csillagpopulációk között?
3. Milyen folyamatok által dúsították fel az első csillagok a csillagközi felhőket nehéz elemekkel?
4. Miért van drasztikus különbség a különböző poplációk elemgyakoriságának eloszlásában halmazonként?
5. Ez drasztikusan különböző fejlődési útvonalra utal, mi ennek az oka?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?
Röviden írja le, milyen új perspektívát nyitnak az alapkutatásban az elért eredmények, milyen társadalmi hasznosíthatóságnak teremtik meg a tudományos alapját. Mutassa be, hogy a megpályázott kutatási területen lévő hazai és a nemzetközi versenytársaihoz képest melyek az egyediségei és erősségei a pályázatának!

Az egyik fő célunk a csillagászati kémiai analízis mint aktívan kutatott terület meghonosítása. Ezt többek között egy a csillagászat élvonalába tartozó tudományos programmal és a jelenlegi legnagyobb infravörös spektroszkópiai égboltfelmérő programhoz való csatlakozással kívánjuk elérni. Az SDSS-IV APOGEE-2 az első égboltfelmérő program mely a teljes Tejútrendszert meg tudja figyelni, így lehetőségünk nyílik az összes fényes gömbhalmazról egységes spektroszkópiai méréseket végezni, létrehozva egy a világon egyedülálló adatbázist.

Az APOGEE-2 privát és publikus adatait fogjuk használni, mely során a pályázatban résztvevők, és a szélesebb magyar csillagász közösség, a jelenlegi legfejlettebb nagyfelbontású spektroszkópiái adatok elemzéséhez szükséges vizsgálati módszerekkel fognak megismerkedni.

A temavezető, Mészáros Szabolcs, az elmúlt hat évben az SDSS-III APOGEE égbolfelmérő programban (mely 100,000 csillag színképét analizálta három év alatt) dolgozott ahol architect és Core Science Team taggá vált. 2014 végén tér haza Magyarországra, de továbbra is tagja lesz az SDSS-IV APOGEE-2 programnak mint External Participant. Ez a státusz kizárólagos jogokat biztosít publikusan nem elérhető APOGEE-2 adatokhoz, mely szükséges az itt leírt tudományos program végig viteléhez. Jelenleg 210,000$ (60 millió HUF) az ára egy személynek az SDSS-IV kollaborációhoz csatlakozni, de ezt a témavezető az SDSS-től mint támogtás elnyerte a korábbi és jövöbeli munkájárt cserébe. Ez az OTKA pályázat elengedhetetlen támogtást fog nyújtani annak érdekében, hogy az External Participant státuszhoz szükséges munkát véghez vigyük. Egyedülálló módon, ez az EP státsusz egy PhD hallgatónak is jogot biztosít az SDSS-hez csatlakozni és privát adatokhoz hozzájutni.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára. Ez az összefoglaló a döntéshozók, a média, illetve az érdeklődők tájékoztatása szempontjából különösen fontos az NKFI Hivatal számára.

Tejútrendszerünk keletkezése és története az Ősrobbanást követő első két milliárd évben ma is az egyik legizgalmasabb kutatási területnek számít a csillagászatban. Ez az OTKA projekt a Galaxisunk legöregebbi és ezzel a legkorábban keletkezett fémszegény csillagainak kémiai összetételét fogja vizsgálni, mely segítségével bepillantást nyerhetünk a korai Tejútrendszer fejlődésébe. Kutatócsoportunk az egyik legnagyobb színképelemzéssel foglalkozó égboltfelmérő programban fog részt venni, mely közel 500,000 csillag (köztük a Tejútrendszer legöregebbi csillagainak) színképét fogja elkészíteni 2020-ig. Ezekből a színképekből fogjuk a csillagok összetételét meghatározni, és ezen keresztül Tejútrendszerünk korai fejlődését megismerni.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts

One of the most intriguing questions of astronomy is how our Galaxy and its subsystems formed in the first billion year after
the Big Bang. We aim to answer this question by studying the chemical composition of the oldest population of stars that can
be observed in globular clusters and the Galactic Halo. The key to this quest is to create the largest database that contains both spectroscopic (provided by the APOGEE-2 survey) and photometric information of all bright, observable globular clusters. By using this unique database, we will be able to explore how and why different stellar populations (discovered both by photometric and spectroscopic measurements) formed in the early Galaxy.

Thus, our research plan is:
1. Detailed chemical analysis of globular clusters observed with APOGEE-2 to study the primordial gas and chemical
evolution of the Milky Way.
2. Determine the chemical composition of stars that belong to different populations in globular clusters according to the color-magnitude diagram.
3. Participate in the work of the biggest high resolution infrared sky survey, APOGEE-2.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The proposed research will aim to answer the following main scientific questions:

1. How did the first stars in the Milky Way form?
2. What is the connection between multiple populations of stars found based on photometry and chemical composition?
3. What was the process that enriched the interstellar gas with material produced by the first generation of stars?
4. Why the chemical makeup of multiple populations is so different from cluster to cluster?
5. This suggest drastically different formation scenarios, what is the reason of this?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

Our goal is also to establish stellar abundance analysis as a frequently studied research field in the Hungarian astronomical
community. We wish to achieve this goal through a robust science project and by joining the largest high resolution, infrared spectroscopic survey. The SDSS-IV APOGEE-2 survey is the first ever that is capable of observing the entire Milky Way from both the southern and northen sky, which allows us to study all bright globular clusters in a uniform way.

We will use both private and public data from APOGEE-2, during which Hungarian astronomers will be able to familiarize themselves with the most advanced and up-to-date spectroscopic measurement techniques available today.

Over the last six years, PI Meszaros has been working on the SDSS-III APOGEE survey, that obtained high-resolution spectra of more than 100,000 stars in its first 3 years of operation, as an architect and Core Science Team member. He is returning to Hungary in late 2014, but he will continue to be member of SDSS-IV and APOGEE-2 as an External Participant which provides exclusive access to proprietary APOGEE-2 data necessary to carry out the above mentioned science program. The cost of participating in SDSS-IV is 210,000$ (60 million HUF) per year for five years, which was awarded to the PI in return to his past and future contributions to the survey. This OTKA proposal is an essential support for carrying out the research and technical work necessary to fulfill to obligations of the EP status. Uniquely, this EP status also allows one PhD student to join SDSS and have access to its private data.

Summary and aims of the research for the public

This research will investigate the history of our own Galaxy, the Milky Way, in the first 2 billion years after the Big Bang,
which is one of the most intriguing questions of modern Astronomy. This project will study the oldest stars known
in the Milky Way by determining the chemical makeup of these red giant stars. These stars are very old, up to 10 billion years, thus by measuring their composition we can look into the past of the Milky Way and determine what kind of stars populated the Universe after the Big Bang. Our group is participating in one of the largest astronomical collaborations, which measures the
atmospheric parameters and chemical composition of more than 500,000 stars until 2020. The early history of our Milky Way
can be revealed by the abundances of different chemical elements observed in the oldest stars spectra.

The major research questions of the NKFI-K 119517 project was to investigate the chemical makeup of globular clusters (GCs) to better understand their evolution. By using data from the APOGEE sky survey, we were able to study the chemical makeup of multiple populations in GCs in a larger scale than it was previously possible and also bring the abundances of southern and northern clusters to the same scale for the first time. We reported on the properties of multiple populations based on their Al-Mg, and C-N anti-correlations and also explored the dependence of the abundance spread of Fe, Al and N on cluster properties based on 2283 stars in 31 GCs (Mészáros et al. 2020). We have published 52 refereed publications (and 8 submitted, or white paper) as part of the NKFI-K 119517 project between 2016. October 1 and 2020. December 31. Altogether, we have received 3798 citations to these papers at the time of this writing. Our PhD student supervised by PI Szabolcs Mészáros and fully funded by this project, László Szigeti, is expected to finish his PhD thesis in the spring of 2021 and defend in the second half of 2021. We have presented our results in SDSS conferences held in 2017, 2018 and 2019. PI Szabolcs Mészáros was an MTA Premium postdoctoral fellow from 2016 to 2019, and has won „The promising researcher of ELTE” fellowship in 2020.

Az NKFI-K 119517 jelű project eredeti célja az volt, hogy a gömbhalmazok kémiai összetételének mérésével jobban megismerjük azok fejlődését. Az APOGEE nagyfelbontású spektroszkópiai égboltfelmérő program adatai alapján el tudtuk készíteni a gömbhalmazok kémiai tulajdonságainak valaha elvégzett legteljesebb felmérését, mely során a történelemben először a déli és északi égbolton megfigyelhető halmazokat egy kémiai skálára tudtunk hozni. A Mészáros et al. 2020 cikkben 31 gömbhalmazhoz tartozó 2283 csillag segítségével tanulmányoztuk az Al-Mg and C-N antikorrelációk eloszlását és vizsgáltuk az Fe, Al, és N szórását a halmaz főbb tulajdonságainak függvényében. Összesen 52 referált cikket publikáltunk (további 8 beküldés alatt áll, vagy white paper volt) 2016. Október 1 and 2020. December 31 között. Ezekre a cikkekre eddig 3798 hivatkozást kaptunk. PhD hallgatónk, Szigeti László 2021 első felében fejezi be PhD tézisét és a második félévben tervezi azt megvédeni. Eredményeinket három SDSS konferencián mutattuk be 2017 és 2019 között. A témavezető, Mészáros Szabolcs 2016 és 2019 között az MTA Prémium posztdoktora volt és 2020-ban elnyerte a „Az ELTE ígéretes kutatója” elismerést.
