A kutatás a Balkán-félsziget központi részének negyedidőszaki felszínfejlődését és paleoklímáját vizsgálta, két fő kutatási irányvonalat követve: (1) Az eljegesedések által létrehozott felszínformák kozmogén izotópos kitettségi kor meghatározása által több hegyégben glaciális kronológiát állított fel a Balkán-félsziget központi részétől a Retyezát hegységig húzódó 500 km hosszú DNy-ÉK-i irányú tengely mentén. A vizsgált területeken a paleogleccserek rekonstrukciója alapján az egyensúlyi vonal magassága kiszámítható volt, ami lehetővé tette paleoklíma adatok levezetését (hőmérséklet és csapadék) a jól definiált korú gleccserek esetében. (2) A barlangok kialakulása Balkán-félsziget központi részén a pliocén-pleisztocén eleji medencetöltődést követően, a tavi rendszerek lecsapolásához és a tektonikus kiemelkedéshez köthető völgybevágáshoz kapcsolódott. A Crna Reka (az Égei-tengerbe vízgyűjtője) és a Radika folyó (az Adriai-tengerbe vízgyűjtője) fejlődését a barlangokban található üledékek kozmogén izotópos betemetődési kormeghatározásával a barlangok korai fejlődésének ideje megbecsülhető volt. Emellett a járatok erózióbázis feletti magasságának ismeretében a területre jellemző bevágódási/kiemelkedési ráta számszerűsíthető volt. E fő célkitűzések mellett a projekt eredményei közé tartoznak a módszertanilag kapcsolódó tanulmányok, beleértve a kiemelkedési ráta számszerűsítését a Pannon-medence központi részén és egy kozmogén izotópos laboratóriumi összehasonlító projektet.

The two main work packages of the project aimed to improve the understanding of the Quaternary landscape evolution and paleoclimate of the Central Balkan Peninsula (CPB): (1) The deglaciation chronology via cosmogenic nuclide exposure age determination of glacial landforms was set up in several major mountain ranges situated along a ~500 km-long transect across a CPB from the Jablanica Mts (SW Macedonia) to the Retezat Mts (Romania). The paleo-glaciers were reconstructed in the studied areas, to calculate their equilibrium line altitudes in order to derive paleoclimate data (temperature and precipitation). Glacio-climatological modelling was performed for paleoglaciers of well-established age. (2) Cave formation in the Central Balkan Peninsula was related to the Pliocene-Early Pleistocene basin fill-up and subsequent valley incision due to draining of the lacustrine systems and tectonic uplift. The evolution of the Crna Reka (draining to the Aegean Sea), and the Radika River (draining to the Adriatic Sea) were investigated via cosmogenic nuclide burial age dating of sediments trapped in caves to estimate the age of the caves. Based on their relationship to the base level, timing of the river incision and related surface uplift rate were estimated. Beside these main objectives, methodologically related studies, including uplift rate quantification within the Pannonian Basin and laboratory inter-comparison project are among the achievements of the project.
