A Balkán-félsziget Európa egyik legfontosabb biodiverzitás ‘hotspot’-ja; számos faj számára szolgált refúgiumként a Quaterner jégkorszak idején, melyek közül a vagilisak a posztglaciális periódusban innen kiindulva kolonizálhatták az északi területeket. Azonban ez a fajta dinamika a talajfaunára – legalábbis annak jelentős részre – nem jellemző, így félrevezető lehet ezen fajok jelenlegi elterjedésének a posztglaciális migrációs dinamikával történő értelmezése. Egy kiváló példa erre a transzégei elterjedési típus, mely emlékeztet ugyan a pontomediterrán elterjedési típusra, azonban ez előbbi esetén a tipikusan mediterrán vidékekről az adott faj hiányzik. A két elterjedési típus közti hasonlóság csak látszólagos, mivel a kialakulásuk hátterében álló folyamatok egészen különbözőek lehetnek. A transzégei típusú elterjedés feltehetően a Kelet-Mediterráneum meglehetősen bonyolult lemeztektonikai történetével kapcsolatos. Sajnos azonban mind a Balkán, mind Kis-Ázsia talajfaunája rendkívül alulkutatott ahhoz, hogy általános érvényű megállapításokat tehessünk. Ezért jelen kutatásunk elsősorban az e területeken előforduló talajfauna (ill. annak egyes fontosabb csoportjai) biodiverzitásának feltárását célozza. Kutatásaink két fő irányra összpontosulnak. Egyrészt a csaknem teljesen ismeretlen területek talajfaunájának taxonómiai feltárása és leírása, másrészt a Kelet Mediterráneum tektonikai története és a fauna, ill. a jellegzetes elterjedési mintázatok kialakulása közötti kapcsolatok értelmezése

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A Kelet-Mediterráneumra meglehetősen dinamikus lemeztektonikai történet jellemző, számos, különböző eredetű mikrolemez összeolvadásából származik. A főként kis mozgékonyságú, helytülő életmódot folytató állatokból összetevődő talajfauna kiválóan alkalmas annak megállapítására, hogy fajaik jelen elterjedési mintázatai a terület tektonikai történetéhez, vagy a Quaterner jégkorszak utáni posztglaciális migrációhoz köthetőek-e. Sajnos azonban a Kelet-Mediterráneum talaj-biodiverzitása alig ismert, ezért legfontosabb céljaink egyike az e területeken élő, egyes talajállat csoportok faunájának feltárása. Hipotézisünk szerint a Kelet-Mediterráneum komplex geológiai története számos, az ősi biótát érintő vikariáns szeparációs és/vagy diszperziós esemény létrejöttét segítette elő. Ezen geológiai folyamatok a talajfauna különböző diszperziós kepeséggel ill. speciációs rátával rendelkező tagjait különbözőképp érinthették s így egymástól eltérő elterjedési mintázatokat hozhattak létre.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Kutatásunk jelentősége elsősorban a Kelet-Mediterráneumban előforduló, egyes talajfauna csoportok biodiverzitásának feltárásában, valamint a fajok mai elterjedési mintázata és a tektonikai események közötti kapcsolatok tisztázásában rejlik. Eredményeink többek között segítséget nyújthatnak a klímaváltozás által előidézett área-dinamika megértéséhez, és legfőképp, kiegészítik a Kelet-Mediterráneum talajfaunájával kapcsolatos, meglehetősen hiányos ismereteinket.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára.

A talajfauna rendkívül fontos szerepet játszik a biológiai, kémiai tulajdonságának kialakításában és termőképességük fenntartásában. Nem véletlenül, a fauna egyes tagjait (pl. földigiliszták) talajmérnök szervezeteknek is hívják. Ezen állatcsoportok jelentőségük ellenére mind taxonómiai, mind biogeográfiai értelemben alig ismertek, s vannak olyan területek, amelyek ma is fehér foltnak tekinthetőek. Kutatásaink során egy ilyen „fehér foltnak” tekinthető régió a Kelet Mediterráneum talajfaunáját kívánjuk feltárni. Ez a terület több szempontból is fontos, különösen azért, mert az egyik jégkorszaki refúgiumként szolgált ahonnan kiindulva egyes csoportok egészen a Kárpát-medencéig vagy még északabbra is eljutottak. A talaj fauna feltehetően nem vett részt ebben a posztglaciális szétterjedésben, azonban ezen taxonok között is találunk Kelet Mediterrán kapcsolatokkal rendelkező fajokat (un. transzégei elterjedési típus). A tervezett kutatások segítenek megérteni ennek a speciális elterjedésnek a kialakulását, s ezáltal általánosabban is a talajfauna faunagenezisének folyamatát.
Summary
Summary of proposed research including key goals for scientifically qualified assessors.

The Balkan Peninsula is one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in Europe and in the Quaternary served as one of the main refuge areas from where the vagile species could have colonized the northern regions. However this dynamics did not apply to the soil fauna (or not to all of them) therefore direct use the postglacial migration theory in interpretation of the present day distributions of soil animals can be misleading. An excellent example of this is the Transaegean distribution which superficially resembles the Pontomediterranean chorotype however in this case the typical Mediterranean regions are not populated. Surely this is only an apparent similarity and the underlying processes leading to this area form are completely different and most probably connected to the rather complicated tectonic history of the East Mediterranean region. Unfortunately the soil fauna of the Balkan and even more Asia Minor are quite poorly studied to draw a general conclusion, therefore our presently proposed researches aim to explore the biodiversity of selected soil fauna components in the Balkan and Asia Minor. Our goals are two fold: first, to taxonomically describe and document the diversity of the soil fauna in an almost unexplored region; second, to clear the role of the very dynamic tectonic history of the Balkan and Asia Minor in the origin of the soil fauna and its special distribution patterns.

What is your research question?

The East Mediterranean possesses a very dynamic tectonic history. It is an amalgamation of several different microplates with different origin. The soil fauna containing mostly sedentary animals is an excellent group to test whether the present distribution patterns are connected the tectonic history of the investigated region or are mainly of Quaternary origin. Unfortunately the soil biodiversity in the East Mediterranean is scarcely known therefore the one of the major goals of our proposal is to explore the biodiversity of selected pedofauna groups in these poorly studied regions. We hypothesize that the complex geological history of the East Mediterranean repeatedly caused numerous vicariant separation and/or dispersal events of the ancestral biota. These processes would have produced different distribution patterns in the Eastern Mediterranean and adjoining areas depending on the dispersal ability and speciation rate of the taxa.

What is the significance of your research?

The significance of our research is to explore the biodiversity of selected soil fauna groups in the East Mediterranean region and answer the question how the palaeohistoric events affected the present day distribution patterns. This knowledge, among others, helps to understand for example the area dynamisms what the climate changes might provoke but most importantly fill the gap in our knowledge on the soil fauna of the East Mediterranean.

Kimutattuk, hogy a problematikus észak-amerikai, balkáni, anatóliai elterjedést mutató Bimastos sensu lato nem polifiletikus. A Bimastos sensu stricto az Eisenoides nemmel együtt egy jól támogatott észak-amerikai kláduszt alkot, míg a korábban szinonímnek tekintett Spermophorodrilus és Healyella nemek a Dendrobaena fajokkal mutatnak rokonságot. A balkáni elterjedésű Spermophorodrilus fajok az anatóliai Healyella fajokkal alkotnak egy közepes támogatottságú testvércsoportot, melyek mintegy 12,7 millió évvel ezelőtt válhattak szét egymástól. Ez az időszak egybe esik a hajdani Égei kontinens északi és déli részre történő szétválásával. A Dendrobaena byblica fajcsoport és közel-rokon fajainak filogenetikai analízise során két jól elváló kláduszt sikerült kimutatnunk. Az egyikbe erősen pigmentált közepes méretű balkáni és közép-európai elterjedésű fajok tartoznak melyeket korábban a Fitzingeria nembe soroltak, illetve azonosnak tartottak a D. byblica fajjal. A másik kláduszt a balkáni-anatóliai elterjedésű kistermetű byblica formál alkotják. A D. byblica sensu stricto faj főbb kládjainak szétválása jól korrelál a régió föbb tektonikai eseményeivel mint pl. a Levantei régió kapcsolódása a déli égeidákhoz, illetve a Torosz hg. kiemelkedése., azonban több esetben recens széthurcolásra mutató nyomokat is találtunk. A Trachytes nem fajainak filogenetikai analízise szintén a régió faunájának komplex, vikariáns események és diszperzió révén történő kialakulását erősítette meg.
Results in English
We have shown that the Bimastos s. lato genus which had an enigmatic N. American-Balkanic-Anatolian distribution, is polyphyletic. The genus Bimastos s. stricto together with Eisenoides forms a well supported North American clade, and its former synonyms the Balkanic Spermophorodrilus and Anatolian Healyella form together a moderately supported Balcanic-Anatolian clade. The split of the two subclades dates back to the middle Serravallian (12.7 Mya) which corresponds well with the brake-up of the former Aegeid landmass to Northern and Southern Aegeids. Phylogenetic analysis of the D. byblica species group and the allied species resulted in discovery of two deeply diverged clades. The first consists of the Central European Fitzingeria and D. byblica specimens rendering the genus Fiztingeria polyphyletic and proving, that the Central-European specimens formerly classified as D. byblica represents new still udescribed species. The second clade is comprised of the small bodied Balcanic-Anatolian D. byblica s. str. specimens. The split of the main subclades of this second clade corresponds well with the tectonic events of the region (e.g. amalgamation of the Levant and Anatolia, uplifting the Taurus Mts. etc.). However, in several cases the recent introdictions cannot be ruled out. Phylogenetic analysis of the Trachytes species resulted in the same conclusion; the origin of the local fauna is rather complex owing to the different vicariant and dispersal events.
