A pályázat témája az elméleti matematika, mint alapkutatás,
azon belül is a harmonikus analízis területére esik. A kapott
eredmények alkalmazásai is az elméleti matematika egyéb
területeihez kapcsolódnak, úgy mint a számelmélet, a
funkcionálanalízis vagy az operátorelmélet.


A pályázat alapját korábbi együttműködésünk szolgáltatta, mely
ez idáig OTKA támogatásban nem részesült. Együttműködésünk
azonban nem csak közös cikkekben nyilvánult meg, hanem az
elmúlt kilenc évben évente megrendezett Potenciálelmélet Nyári
Iskolák illetve kétévenkénti Fourier analízis konferenciák
szervezésében is. A pályázatban ezen rendezvényeken való részvételünk anyagi
támogatásáért is folyamodunk.

A pályázat számos egymáshoz kapcsolódó kérdéskörből áll.
Vizsgálnánk Fourier analízisbeli extremális problémákat, pl. a
nevezetes Delsart-problémát LCA csoportok esetén is, mely a
legsűrűbb pakolás kérdéskörében alkalmazható jól. Új eszközünk
itt a Révész által kidolgozott egyenletes aszimptotikus felső
sűrűség fogalma halmazokra és mértékekre LCA csoportokon.
Tervezzük Wiener-Ikehara típusú tételek vizsgálatát valamint
effektív oszcillációs illetve előjelváltási-becslések
vizsgálatát, melyek a számelméletben játszanak fontos szerepet.
A probléma itt effektív, erős Fourier-analízisbeli becslésekre
vezethető vissza, melyek egy része ismert, más része
kidolgozandó. További fontos extremális probléma az ún.
minimális extrapolációs kérdéskör, mely operátorok
rezolvensének normabecslésére kiválóan alkalmazhatóak. Ez egy
nagyon konkrét, viszont mély és nehéz probléma, melyben bármi
előrelépés jelentősnek számít és rengeteg alkalmazásra tarthat
számot.

A következő, úgynevezett felbontási problémával is kívánunk foglalkozni: mely feltételek mellett lehet egy adott függvényt periodikus függvények
összegére felbontani. A probléma természetes módon fogalmazható
meg az operátorelmélet nyelvezetén, mely lehetővé teszi az
operátor-ergodelmélet módszereinek alkalmazását, valamint egy
újabb még csak kis mértékben vizsgált irányban való vizsgálódás
felé is megnyitja az utat:a Banach tér geometria felé (pl.
kvázireflexivitás). Ez elvezet a pályázat másik nagy
kérdésköréhez is: potenciálelméleti módszerekkel szeretnénk
vizsgálni metrikus illetve Banach terek geometriájához
kapcsolódó konstansokat, úgymint a Csebisev konstanst vagy a
randevú számot. Ezzel kapcsolatban, a korábbi kutatásaink
folytatásaként szeretnénk a Fuglede, Ohtsuka, Choquet féle
absztrakt potenciálelméletet nem szimmetrikus magfüggvények
esetére is kidolgozni. Ez lehetővé tenné súlyozott minimális
energia problémák illetve súlyozott approximációelméleti
kérdések vizsgálatát általános eszközök bevetésével. Mindez
szükséges azonban a híres polarizációs konstans probléma
vizsgálatához is, melyet a projekt keretében szintén meg
szeretnénk tenni. Végül egy utolsó fontos kapcsolódási pont a
harmonikus analízis és az operátorelmélet valamint a parciális
differenciáloperátorok elmélete között, melyet a projektben
vizsgálni szeretnénk, a degenerált hipoellipitikus operátorok
regularitáselmélete Gauss-mértékkel súlyozott Lp tereken.

A fentiekben vázolt, a pályázatban részletesen bemutatott kérdések a mai matematikában általánosan ismertek, a számos kapcsolódási pont révén sok kutató foglalkozik velük. Reményeink szerint a korábbi együttműködésünkhöz hasonlóan sikeresek leszünk, mely reményünket az elmúlt években a témában megszerzett tapasztalatunkra alapozzuk.
Summary
The project aims at a theoretical mathematical science research
assignment in mathematical analysis, more precisely in harmonic
analysis, and applications primarily in number theory, functional
analysis and operator theory. Hence the proposal falls in the category
of basic, fundamental research. The project is partially based on
previous joint work, that up to now has not been supported
by the OTKA foundation financially, and that is also related to our
already nine years old undertaking of the organization of the series
of yearly Summer Schools in Potential Theory as well as also the
biannual Workshops in Fourier Analysis.
We seek for the support of OTKA also to find coverage for our
participation on these regular events, always organised with great
financial difficulties up to now.

The proposal consists of several connected topics. We would
investigate extremal problems in Fourier analysis, in particular
Delsarte-type problems also in the LCA group setting, applicable e.g.
in densest packing estimates. Our main tool here is a new, yet
unpublished construction of Révész for the asymptotic uniform upper
density of sets or measures in a locally compact Abelian group (LCA
group). Also we plan to study Wiener-Ikehara type theorems on the one
hand, and effective oscillation and sign change estimates by means of
positive definite functions on the other hand, both important in
number theory. Here the problem boils down to effective, strong
Fourier-analytic auxiliary estimates, partly known and partly to be
found. Another group of extremal problems is the minimal extrapolation
problem, which among others having important applications for
resolvent estimates in operator theory. Here the problem is very
concrete yet hard to crack, but any advance could be applied in
several questions.

The problem of decomposition of a given function into a sum of
periodic functions is another topic we would like to deal with. This
has a natural operator theoretic formulation that allows for the use
of tools from operator ergodic theory, and also gives way to a yet
only partially explored connection to Banach space geometry (such as
quasireflexivity). This topic leads to another large part of the
project: potential analytic description of geometry of metric and
Banach spaces with the help of Chebyshev constants and points and the
so-called rendezvous numbers. In connection to this and based on our
previous works we would like to extend the abstract linear potential
theory of Fuglede, Ohtsuka and Choquet to non-symmetric kernels, which
would allow us to study minimal energy problems in weighted situation
and weighted approximation theory questions by means of general
results. This is also necessary for the treatment of the intriguing
problem of the so-called real polarisation constants in functional
analysis, what we would like to deal with. Now another important
connection of harmonic analysis to operator theory and partial
differential operators is the last part of the project where we would
like to study degenerate hypoelliptic operators on Gaussian-weighted
spaces.

These questions, as described in our research plan thoroughly, are
popular and highly valued questions among the mathematical community,
considered by several researchers nowadays. We hope to be successful,
particularly on the grounds of our joint works in recent years.

Beláttuk Montgomery és Mockenhaupt egy nevezetes sejtését háromtagú ellenpélda létezéséről a Hardy-Littlewood majoráns problémában. Olyan effektív hibatagos Wiener-Ikehara tételeket bizonyítottunk, amelyek lassan csökkenő függvények osztályaira is működnek. A periodikus felbontás probléma körében bizonyos félcsoportokra értünk el új eredményeket. A kapcsolódó kutatások illetve a szükséges eredmények a Springer GTM sorozatban megjelent könyvben is dokumentálva lettek. Ennek befejezéshez F.B. rövidebb Oberwolfachbeli tartózkodásának támogatása is hozzájárult. Szintén a periodikus felbontási problémához kapcsolódóan fedeztünk fel egy Bohl-Bohr-Kadets típusú lineáris operátorokra vontakozó tételt. Megtaláltuk Wiener folytonos mértékekre vonatkozó tételének Hilbert téren értelmezett lineáris kontrakciókra vonatkozó általánosítását, ez az átlagergodikus operátorok elméletén keresztül szintén a nevezett problémához kapcsolódik. A nemlineáris potenciálelmélet keretei között értelmeztük olyan klasszikus fogalmak megfelelőjét, mint a transzfinit átmérő és a Fekete-pontok. Lokálisan kompakt Abel csoportokon leírtuk a Carathéodory-Fejér típusú extremális problémákat, sőt az eredményt megfelelő feltételek mellett kiterjesztettük lokálisan kompakt csoportokra is. Egy kb. 600 oldalas könyv, egy PhD értekezés, az Ames Díj, 27 publikáció (összesen több mint ezer oldal), három magas színvonalú nemzetközi konferencia lebonyolítása Budapesten mind sokat köszönhet a kapott támogatásnak.
Results in English
We proved an intriguing conjecture of Montgomery and Mockenhaupt on three-term counterexamples in the Hardy-Littlewood majorant problem. We obtained an effective, general Wiener-Ikehara theorem. In the periodic decomposition problem (PD) we obtained new result concerning semigroup actions. The related research and the needed results are also documented in a Springer GTM series book, whose completion was supported by the project (B.F. in Oberwolfach). Related to the (PD) we found a Bohl-Bohr-Kadets type theorem for linear operators. A newly discovered version of Wiener's theorem about continuous measures for linear Hilbert space contractions relates, via the theory of mean ergodic operators, also to the (PD) problem. We extended to the nonlinear potential theory context classical notions like transfinite diameter and Fekete points. On l.c.a. groups we succeeded in describing the general Carathéodory-Fejér type extremal problems, and we obtained analogous results under general conditions even in the non-commutative setting. A book over 600 pages, a PhD dissertation, an Ames Award, 27 publications, mostly in good journals, organization of three high-level international conferences in Budapest, were altogether made possible through this support. We succeeded in about 70% of the questions, posed in our research plan, in some cases going well over the plans. Also a good deal of related, newly arising problems were solved, thus modifying the project in about an extent of 30%.
