A probléma komplex volta miatt mindezidáig nem történtek szisztematikus vizsgálatok a feszültségek diffúzióra/reakcióra gyakorolt hatásáról. A Stephenson modell keretein belül tervezünk ilyen irányú számolásokat végezni sík és gömbi geometriában, a vakancia források és nyelők figyelembevételével. A nanoskálán rétegezett anyagokban a feszültségek felépülése és relaxációja a mátrixok tágulásához/összezsugorodásához vezethetnek. A Budapest Neutron Központban neutron állóhullámos módszert kívánunk kifejleszteni és e folyamatok vizsgálatát tervezzük a kifejlesztett módszer, valamint egy e célra módosított szinkrotron állóhullámos módszer segítségével. Szintén a diffúzió/reakció mélyebb megértéséhez, vizsgálni kívánjuk rendezett magok kialakulását rendeződő rendszerekben, valamint olyan rendszerekben, melyekben egy rendezett fázis egyensúlyt tart egy korlátozott oldékonyságú szilárdoldattal. Elemezni fogjuk, hogy az atomok mozgékonyságának aránya a magban és a befoglaló mátrixban hogyan befolyásolja a magméret-eloszlást. Vékonyrétegek esetében, amikor diffundálandó atomok koncentrációja nagy, a hagyományos tracer diffúziós mérések használhatósága kérdéses. Ezt folyamatban lévő atompróba tomográfiás mérések is alátámasztják. Az atompróba tomográfia lokális módszerrel szemben a vékonyfilmeken végzett XPS vizsgálatok egy átlagos képet látnak a szemcsehatárokról. A szemcsehatár diffúziós együttható meghatározására Hwang-Balluffi elrendezésben tervezünk kísérleteket végezni.
Summary
Due to the complexity of the problem, until now there has been no systematic investigation into the effect of stresses on the diffusion-reaction. We plan calculations in the framework of Stephenson’s model, both for planar and spherical geometries, considering vacancy sinks and sources. Stress development and relaxation may result in contraction or expansion of matrixes in a nanolayered material. We will develop neutron standing wave technique (NSW) at the Budapest Neutron Centre and study these effects by using the NSW and synchrotron standing wave technique modified for this purpose. Also for deeper understanding of diffusion-reaction processes, we intend to investigate the formation of ordered nuclei in ordering systems and in which an ordered phase and a solid solution with restricted solubility are in equilibrium. We will investigate how the size distribution of ordered nuclei is influenced by the ratio of the atomic mobilites in the nucleus than in the embedding matrix. In the case of thin layers, when the concentration of diffusion species is high, the applicability of the traditional tracer diffusion measurements is put under question. There are ongoing atom probe tomography (APT) investigations indicating this issue. As compared to the APT (local method), the XPS studies in thin film geometry offers an averaged result over a set of different grain boundaries (GB). We plan to perform experiments in Hwang-Balluffi arrangement to measure the GB diffusion coefficients.

Kutatásaink során nanoskálán lejátszódó diffúziós és szilárdfázisú reakciók területén értünk el jelentős eredményeket. Alapvetően négy csoportra oszthatók az elvégzett feladatok: i) Kölcsönös diffúzió, szilárdtest reakció és feszültségek, ii) Fázisnövekedés vizsgálata neutronos és szinkrotronos módszerekkel, iii) Fázisnukleáció rendezett rendszerekben korlátozott oldékonyság mellett és iv) Szemcsehatár diffúzió. i)-ben gömbi és sík geometriában lejátszódó reaktív diffúzió és a közben felépülő, valamint relaxálódó feszültséghatások kölcsönhatásának leírására fejlesztettünk ki egy modellt. ii)-ben a technológiában is fontos szilárdfázisú reakciók időbeni lejátszódását vizsgáltuk nanométeres, sőt atomi feloldású kísérleti módszerek segítségével. Kísérletileg kimértük a fenomenologikusan megjósolt nem Fick-i kinetikát, melynek kimutatására igen kevés példa létezik az irodalomban. Továbbá először végeztünk Kirkendall eltolódási vizsgálatokat nanoskálán. iii)-ban egy új 3D atomisztikus, stochasztikus modellt fejlesztettünk ki. Ezen felül kísérletileg megmutattuk, hogy fázisok nukleációját két anyag határán jelentősen befolyásolja a határfelület élessége. iv)-ben megmutattuk, hogy alacsony hőmérsékleten a fázisképződés nem feltétlenül a határfelületen indul meg, hanem először a szemcsehatárokba hatol be az anyag és ott nukleálódik a termékfázis.
Results in English
We achieved significant results in the field of nanoscale diffusion and solid state reaction. The work can be classified into four groups: i) Intermixing, solid state reaction and stresses, ii) Investigation of phase growth by a combination of neutron and synchrotron techniques, iii) Phase nucleation in ordering systems with restricted solubility, iv) Grain boundary diffusion. In i) we developed a model to describe reactive diffusion in spherical and planar geometries which also considers the stress development and relaxation. In ii) we suited the kinetics of technologically important solid state reactions on the nano, even on the atomic scale. We observed non-Fickian kinetics predicted by phenomenological models; experimental examples are extremely rare in literature. Furthermore, we measured Kirkendall shift on the nanoscale; we are the first who could realize these experiments. In iii) we developed a new 3D atomistic stochastic model. We showed experimentally that phase nucleation at the border of two materials is influenced by the sharpness of the interface. In iv) we showed that phase nucleation does not start necessarily at the interface at low temperatures. Instead, the material penetrates the grain boundaries and the nucleation of the new phase starts there.
