A grafénkutatás a nanotudományok egyik legdinamikusabban fejlődő új iránya, amit a 2010-es évi Fizikia Nobel Díj is fémjelez (Web of Science 2009: > 2000 referált folyóirat cikk, > 35000 hivatkozás; 2010: >3300 referált folyóirat cikk, > 65000 hivatkozás). A grafén kristálytani irányok szerinti nanomegmunkálásában egyedülálló eredményeket értünk el a záró OTKA pályázatunkban (67793) [Nature Nanotechnology 3, (2008) 397; Nano Res. 3, (2010) 110; Nano Lett. 10, (2010) 4544]. Ezek alapján tervezünk továbblépni a grafén nanoarchitektúrák (egyedi nanoszerkezetekből bizonyos szabályok szerint felépített bonyolultabb rendszerek) kutatás felé. Ezen a területen számos elméleti jóslat létezik, azonban a kísérleti eredmények szinte nem létezőnek mondhatók. Ennek oka a grafén atomi pontosságú megmunkálásnak nehézségeiben található meg. Tekintettel arra, hogy a mi eredményeink pontosan ezen a területen kínálnak kísérleti lehetőségeket ezekre támaszkodva grafén nanoarchitektúrákat tervezünk létrehozni és viselkedésüket tanulmányozni a rendelkezésünkre álló pásztázószondás (STM/AFM) módszerekkel. Amint azt korábban is alkalmaztuk a szén nanocsövek kutatása esetében, párhuzamosan tervezünk haladni a kísérleti és a számítógépes szimulációs munkával, elsősorban sajátfejlesztésű hullámcsomagdinamikai szimulációs csomagunka alapozva. Tovább kell fejlesztenünk ezt a szoftvert, hogy képes legyen a grafén éleken elhelyezkedő atomok helyes kezelésére.
Summary
Graphene research is perhaps the most dynamical topic in Nanosciences as it was emphasized by the Nobel Prize in Physics 2010, too (Web of Science 2009: > 2000 peer reviewed papers, > 35000 citations; 2010: >3300 peer reviewed papers, > 65000 citations). In our closing OTKA project (67793) we have unique achievements in the nanopatterning of graphene with crystallographic orientation control [Nature Nanotechnology 3, (2008) 397; Nano Res. 3, (2010) 110; Nano Lett. 10, (2010) 4544]. Based on these we plan to step forward to research on graphene nanoarchitectures (complex systems built from individual nano-objects according to certain rules). There are numerous theoretical predictions in this field, but the experimental data are almost completely absent. The reason is to be found in the difficulties in the atomic precision nanopatterning of graphene. Given that our earlier result offer experimental possibilities exactly in this direction, we plan to produce graphene nanoarchitectures and the study of their behavior with scanning probe methods (STM/AFM). As we did earlier in the case of carbon nanotube research we plan two parallel research directions an experimental one and one based on computer simulation, using the wave packet dynamical software developed by us. We have to extend the capabilities of this software to make it able to correctly handle the edge atoms of graphene nanoarchitectures.

Kísérleti és számítógépes szimulációra alapuló módszerekkel feltártuk a grafénben történő töltésterjedés sajátosságait és ezeket az eredményeket alkalmaztuk a kémiai leválasztással előállított, polikristályos grafénben a szemcsehatárok feltárására és jellemzésére, illetve a szemcsehatároknak a töltésterjedés mikéntjére gyakorolt hatásainak a megértésére. Megmutattuk, hogy azoknak a szemcsehatároknak a legkárosabb a hatásuk, amelyek C atom vakanciákat is tartalmaznak. Közel atomi pontossággal és kristálytanilag meghatározott irányok szerint vágtunk ki nanoszalagokat különleges szubsztrátra áthelyezett CVD grafénből és elsőként megmutattuk, hogy a karosszék élű szalagok tiltott sávja jól egyezik az elméleti számolások eredményeivel és kimutattuk kísérletileg, hogy a cikk-cakk élű szalagok esetében mágneses rendeződés jön létre a szalagok élein. A 7 nm keskenyebb szalagok esetében ez a rendeződés antiferromágneses a szalagok szélei között és tiltott sávot eredményez, 7 nm felett a rendeződés ferromágneses és nem hoz létre tiltott sávot. Elsőként mutattuk meg és magyaráztuk elméletileg, hogy a felfüggesztett grafén mechanikai feszültség hatására képes nm alatti hullámosságot mutatni, ami megmutatkozik az elektronszerkezet modosulásában is. Különféle grafén alapú hereonanoarchitekúrákat hoztunk létre és vizsgáltuk ezek tulajdonságait. Több tématerületen is felkérésre írt összefoglaló cikkekben térképeztük fel a „state of the art”-ot.
Results in English
Using experiments and computer simulation we investigated the charge propagation in graphene and used these findings for the revealing of the grain boundaries in the graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition and in the understanding of the effect of grain boundaries on the charge propagation of CVD graphene. We showed that those grain boundaries are the most harmful ones which contain C atom vacancies. We cut graphene nanoribbons with atomic precision and with well-defined crystallopgraphic orientation from CVD graphene transferred to special substrates and we showed for the first time that transport gap pf the armchair graphene nanoribbons is in good agreement with theoretical calculations and we showed experimentally for the first time that on the edge of zig-zag nanoribbons magnetic ordering takes place. This magnetic ordering has an antiferromagnetic character between the edges of the ribbon for widths below 7 nm and produces a gap, while it is ferromagnetic an without a gap for ribbons of with exceeding 7 nm. We observed for and explained theoretically for the time that suspended graphene subjected to mechanical stress may exhibit sub-nanometer wavelength rippling, which manifest itself in the alteration of the electronic structure, too. We produced various heteronanoarchitectures of graphene and investigated their properties. We wrote several review papers – some of them as invited papers – to summarize the state of the art in certain fields of graphene research
