A hosszú és rövid távú klímaingadozási folyamatok által a vízháztartásra gyakorolt hatások meghatározása elsődleges jelentőségű a Kárpát-medence klímaváltozással szembeni viselkedésének megértéséhez. Erre a célra a travertinók és barlangi tufagátak összehasonlító elemzése egyedülállóan alkalmas lehet, tekintettel a többszörös mintázási lehetőségekre és az elérhető nagy időbeli felbontásra. E projektben nagy felbontású geokémiai és U-sorozatos korhatározási elemzéseket tervezünk a Gerecse és a Budai-hegység jelentős vastagságú travertinó szelvényein, valamint a hazánkban még nem vizsgált barlangi tufagátakon. A projektterv három fő kontinentális karbonátképződmény vizsgálatát tartalmazza: 1) a Gerecse és a Budai-hegység középső-felső pleisztocén travertinói, 2) recens karbonátkiválások a Budai-hegység termálvizes forrásaiban és kútjaiban, 3) bükki (pl. Sebesvíz) és aggteleki (Baradla és Béke barlangok) mésztufagátak. A tervezett munka feltáró jellegű, mivel a hazai barlangi mésztufagátak korviszonyaira semmilyen információ nem áll rendelkezésre. Emellett a termálvízforrások és a mésztufagátak helyszínén a fizikai és kémiai paraméterek monitorozását tervezzük. A fizikai paraméterek mellett a vizek és kiváló karbonátok stabilizotópos összetételeit és nyomelemkoncentrációit is meghatározzuk annak megállapítása érdekében, hogy a képződmények mennyiben tükrözik a környezeti körülményeket. A travertinók és tufaüledékek neotektonikai elemzése is megtörténik. A tervezett munka várható eredménye egy jól megalapozott geokémiai és geokronológiai adatbázis, ami felülírhatja a korábbi folyóbevágódási és kiemelkedési modelleket. Emellett a várható eredmények pontosíthatják és továbbfejlesztik a korábban travertinókon, cseppköveken és kagylóhéjakon végzett vizsgálatokból levont következtetéseket, amelyek fontos klímaváltozási és hidrológiai folyamatokat tártak fel mind 100 ezer, mind 100-1000 éves léptékben, de vagy szűkített időtartományban, vagy csak egyes, véletlenszerűen megjelenő klímaváltozási események esetében. Az eredmények alapján a Kárpát-medencében a korábbiaknál tágabb időtartamú és ugyanakkor részletesebb paleoklimatológiai és paleohidrológiai modellek várhatóak.
Summary
Determinations of both long- and short-term climate variation processes and their influences on the hydrological regimes are of primary importance for the assessment of the behaviour of the Carpathian Basin during climate change. For this purpose the comparison of travertines and cave-hosted tufa dams seems to be uniquely appropriate, taking the advantage of multiple sampling and high temporal resolution. We plan high-resolution geochemical and U-series dating studies on detailed vertical sections collected at significant travertine sites in the Gerecse and Buda Hills and on cave tufa deposits that have not been studied yet in Hungary. The project plan is focussed on three different types of continental (freshwater) carbonates: 1) Middle-Upper Pleistocene travertine deposits of the Gerecse and Buda Hills; 2) recent carbonate deposits formed around thermal springs and wells; 3) calcareous tufa dams developed both on the surface of the Bükk Mts. (e.g. Sebesvíz Valley) and in caves (e. g. Béke and Baradla Caves, Aggtelek Hills). The planned work is a pilot study as no information on the age relationships are known for Hungarian cave-hosted tufa-dam formations. Additionally, monitoring of physical and chemical parameters of recently forming carbonate formations will be performed in thermal springs and cave-hosted creeks. Beside physical parameters, stable isotope compositions and trace element concentrations will be determined both in the water and the precipitating carbonate to assess how the deposits can reflect ambient conditions. Travertines and cave tufa deposits will also be used for neotectonic investigations. The planned research would give well-constrained geochronological and geochemical data that are expected to change earlier estimates on river incision or uplift rate of the area and refine and improve the conclusions of earlier investigations on travertines, stalagmites and bivalve shells. The earlier studies have revealed important climatic and hydrological features both in the 100 ky and 0.1-1 ky time scales, but either in narrow time periods, or for climate change events that were accidentally observed. On the base of the expected results, paleoclimatic and paleohydrological models are expected with time scales and resolutions that has not been achieved in the Carpathian Basin.

A projektben számos travertino előfordulást vizsgáltunk újra. A korhatározás pontossága és a feltárási feltételek alapján néhány előfordulást választottunk ki részletes elemzésre. Az Új-Haraszti kőfejtő travertinója a 148 és 415 ka közötti időszakot fedi le. A süttői Gazda és Cukor kőfejtők travertinóin részletes szedimentológiai, szerkezetföldtani és rezervoárgeológiai elemzéseket végeztünk, aminek alapján egy töréshez kapcsolódó forráskiömlési helyszínt lehet rögzíteni. A jelenleg képződő karbonátok „clumped isotope” elemzése kalibrációs görbét eredményezett, amit a fosszilis travertinók vizsgálatában lehet hasznosítani. A termálvízből történő karbonátkiválás és a barlangi környezetek monitorozásával nagyszámú adatot tartalmazó adatbázis jött létre, amit a nyomelem- és stabilizotóp-összetételek értelmezésében lehet alkalmazni, valamint alapvető karbonátképződési folyamatokat tártunk fel. Az utolsó interglaciálistól napjainkig terjedő időszakot lefedő cseppkőképződmények elemzését változatos módszerek alkalmazásával végeztük el. Az utolsó kb. 130 ezer év során a Kárpát-medencére jellemző hőmérséklet- csapadék- és szerzonalitás-változásokat mutattunk ki, ami a régió klímaváltozásokkal szembeni viselkedésének megértéséhez járul hozzá. Az eredményeket a geokémia és a paleoklíma-kutatás vezető folyóirataiban publikáltuk.
Results in English
Numerous travertine occurrences were revisited and analysed in this project. Based on age determination precision and outcrop preservation, selected occurrences could be studied in details. The travertine body of the Új-Haraszti quarry was deposited during the Middle-Pleistocene, between 415 and 148 ky. Sedimentological, structural geological and reservoir geological investigations on the travertines of the Gazda-quarry and the Sugar Quarry of Süttő were performed that revealed fissure ridge like structures that could have served as the main paleospring discharge point. Clumped isotope analyses of recently forming carbonates yielded a calibration curve for analyses of fossil travertines. Monitoring of carbonate formation in thermal waters as well as cave environments yielded an extensive database. The studies determined the relationships between environmental paramateres and speleothem compositions, providing a base for the interpretations of trace element and isotopic compositions, as well as revealed fundamental carbonate precipitation processes. Speleothems covering a wide temporal range from the last interglacial to the present time have been investigated using various analytical methods. Temperature, humidity and seasonality changes in the Carpathian Basin were deciphered for the last ~130 ka, contributing to the knowledge of the region’s behavior during climate change events. The results were published in leading journals of geochemistry and paleoclimate research.
