A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára. A tervezett kutatás célkitűzése, hogy elkészítjük a lektorálásra kész kéziratát egy válogatásnak az adott időszakban született magyarországi esztétikai értekezésekből. A korszak egészét tükröző összeállítást tervezünk, a szövegeket kritikai (a keletkezés- és fogadtatástörténetre is kiterjedő) jegyzetekkel látjuk el. A kötethez kísérőtanulmányt mellékelünk, amely áttekintést nyújt a magyar esztétika kezdeti időszakának főbb irányzatairól. A kiadáshoz az egyes szerzők válogatott bibliográfiája is csatlakozna. Az érintett művek többsége idegen (jellemzően latin és német) nyelvű, így szükség lesz a szövegek magyarra fordítására is. A gyűjtemény spektruma a már ismert szerzők (Szerdahely György, Schedius Lajos, Berzsenyi Dániel, Verseghy Ferenc stb.) művei mellett a korban ismert és elismert, de később már kevésbé számon tartott esztétákra is kiterjedne (pl. Rumy Károly György, Gabelhofer Gyula, Greguss Mihály). Mivel a kéziratos nyilvánosság a korszakban igen kiterjedt és jelentős volt, hatása részint az aktív levelezési kultúra, a külföldi és magyar tudományos kapcsolatrendszerek, tudós társaságok és az oktatási rendszer révén széleskörű és elhanyagolhatatlan, ezt mérlegelve az antológiában kéziratos anyagokat is tervezünk feldolgozni. Helyet kapnak továbbá a válogatásban az első magyar esztétikafordítások, melyek e tudományág szaknyelvét, immár két és fél évszázados diskurzusát megalapozták.
Mi a kutatás alapkérdése? Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek. Kik és mely esztétikai tárgyú írásokat publikáltak 1750 és 1850 között, Magyarország akkori területén? Melyek emellett a kéziratban fellelhető, számottevő ilyen témájú munkák? Magyarországi szerzők külföldön milyen esztétikai értekezéseket adtak ki, illetve milyen kézirataik (pl. egyetemi disszertációik) maradtak fenn a tárgykörben? Kik és milyen esztétikai kézikönyveket fordítottak a korban magyarra? A magyar esztéták milyen személyes, illetve intézményes európai (egyetemekhez, tudományos társaságokhoz fűződő) kapcsolatrendszerrel rendelkeztek, volt-e munkáiknak fogadtatása a külföldi szakkiadványokban és általában a sajtóban, s milyen módokon kapcsolódtak be a nemzetközi tudományos diskurzusba?
Mi a kutatás jelentősége? Röviden írja le, milyen új perspektívát nyitnak az alapkutatásban az elért eredmények, milyen társadalmi hasznosíthatóságnak teremtik meg a tudományos alapját. Mutassa be, hogy a megpályázott kutatási területen lévő hazai és a nemzetközi versenytársaihoz képest melyek az egyediségei és erősségei a pályázatának! Ez a kiadvány az első lépés lenne egy új, korszerű magyar esztétikatörténet megalkotása felé. Hiánypótló volna nemcsak a magyar irodalom- és esztétikatörténet szempontjából, hanem – figyelembe véve a tudományág eredendően nemzetközi jellegét, illetve a vizsgált szövegek elsődleges hátterét – visszaillesztené a magyar tudomány ezen eredményeit abba az európai kontextusba, amelyben létrejöttek. Ezek az összefüggések azt is mutatják, hogy fontos lenne, és tervezzük is a későbbiekben a kötetet angol vagy német fordításban-átdolgozásban is megjelentetni. Jelentősebb nem magyar nyelvű magyar esztétikatörténeti összefoglalás ugyanis eleddig egyáltalán nem látott napvilágot, holott a korszak európai esztétikatörténetét tanulmányozó külföldi kutatók és kutatói centrumok irányából lenne rá tudományos igény. Fontos kiemelni továbbá, hogy a vizsgált időszak esztétikatudománya kiemelten interdiszciplináris: az általunk kutatandó és publikálandó szövegek tehát nemcsak az irodalomtudomány, hanem a művészettörténet, filozófiatörténet, zenetörténet számára is érdekesek lesznek, többek között még pszichológiatörténeti vagy természettudományi szempontból is tartalmaznak majd releváns vonatkozásokat.
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára. Ez az összefoglaló a döntéshozók, a média, illetve az érdeklődők tájékoztatása szempontjából különösen fontos az NKFI Hivatal számára. A magyar esztétika történetének kezdeteiről eddig nem folyt átfogó alapkutatás és az ide tartozó szövegek is részben kiadatlanok, részben nehezen hozzáférhetők. A kutatás célja, hogy ezekből az értekezésekből válogatást jelentessünk meg, a művek befogadását megkönnyítő kritikai jegyzetekkel és kísérőtanulmánnyal. Az antológia az egykorú nyomtatott (könyvekben és folyóiratokban megjelent), illetve kéziratos korabeli széptani tárgyú munkákból egyaránt merít, és kiterjeszkedik a Magyarországon írt német és latin nyelvű szövegekre is: ezeket magyar fordításban tesszük közzé. A kísérőtanulmány áttekintést nyújt a magyar esztétikatörténet első évszázadának irányzatairól. A jegyzetek a tárgyi és nyelvi magyarázatok mellett kiterjednek a szövegek keletkezés- és fogadtatástörténetére, valamint tartalmazzák a szerzők főbb életrajzi adatait és annotált bibliográfiáját.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts Describe the major aims of the research for experts. The aim of the research is to prepare the completed manuscript (ready for editing) of selected treatises on Hungarian aesthetics written between 1750 and 1850. Our goal is to provide a representative view of the period in the form of a critical edition: The apparatus will include annotations discussing also the genesis and reception history of the texts and an introduction which will examine the key concepts of Hungarian aesthetics in its first century. In addition, the edition will contain a selected bibliography on each author. Since the majority of the treatises are in Latin and German and have not been previously published in Hungarian, the volume will include original translations from these sources. The scope of the collection aims to be comprehensive: Some authors will be familiar (György Szerdahely, Lajos Schedius, Dániel Berzsenyi, Ferenc Verseghy etc.), while others, despite their contemporary reputation, may seem lesser-known (e.g. Károly György Rumy, Gyula Gabelhofer, Mihály Greguss). Since manuscript culture in the public domain was widespread and significant and it exerted a broad and momentous influence in a lively culture of correspondence, in scholarly networks between Hungary and abroad, literary societies and educational institutions, therefore materials available in manuscript form will also be represented in the anthology. The collection would be incomplete without including those contemporary Hungarian translations of aesthetic treatises which have laid the foundations for Hungarian aesthetic discourse in the next two and a half centuries.
What is the major research question? Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments. The research will examine the following questions: What kind of aesthetic works were published between 1750 and 1850 in contemporary Hungary? Who published them? What is the nature and extent of the manuscripts on the subject? What kind of aesthetic treatises were published abroad by Hungarian authors and what is extant in manuscript form (e.g. university dissertations)? What were the authors’ personal and institutional (universities, literary societies) networks like? If present, what was the nature of the reception of their works in scholarly publications and generally in the press? How did these authors participate in the discourse of international scholarship?
What is the significance of the research? Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field. We propose that this collection of source texts be the first move towards a new and up-to-date history of Hungarian aesthetics. On the one hand, the publication aims to fill a major gap in the history of Hungarian literature and aesthetics and on the other hand, by taking into account the international origins of the discipline as well as the source texts’, it positions the findings of contemporary Hungarian scholarship in the European context in which it was created. Accordingly, we also plan to publish the collection in English or German at a later stage. No major summary on Hungarian aesthetics has been published in languages other than Hungarian, even though there is interest in the research findings on the history of Hungarian aesthetics from scholars and research centers abroad. We also want to emphasize that aesthetic treatises in the period surveyed were of a particularly interdisciplinary nature: Our collection therefore will be of interest not only for literary history but also for art history, history of philosophy, musicology, and might be relevant in the historical research of psychology and natural sciences.
Summary and aims of the research for the public Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others. The first century in the history of Hungarian aesthetics has not been the subject of basic research activity to this date; most of its textual sources are unpublished and many of the relevant documents are difficult to access. Our aim is to publish a representative collection of texts accompanied by critical notes and an introduction. The anthology will comprise of aesthetic works published both in the contemporary press (in books and journals) and left in manuscripts. Since the majority of the treatises are in Latin and German and have not been previously published in Hungarian, the publication will include original translations from these sources. The introduction will examine the key concepts of Hungarian aesthetics in its first century. The apparatus will also include annotations (explanatory notes, notes on the genesis and reception history of the texts), a short biography of the authors surveyed and an annotated bibliography of their works.

A kutatás során elvégeztük a magyarországi esztétikai gondolkodás első száz évében keletkezett esztétikai tanulmányszövegek lehetőség szerint teljes körű felmérését, e munkák közül kiválogattuk és elektronikusan rögzítettük az elmélettörténetileg jelentős, ám kiadatlan vagy nehezen hozzáférhető szövegeket, és kritikai jegyzetapparátust készítettünk hozzájuk. Eközben megírtuk a kritikai kiadás kísérő tanulmányait is. A kritikai kiadás kézirata elkészült: szaklektorálás után jelenhet majd meg.
Szövegfeltáró és elméleti jellegű kutatási eredményeinkről hazai és nemzetközi konferenciákon számoltunk be, és számos tanulmányt publikáltunk a témában szakfolyóiratokban és tanulmánykötetekben. A konferenciák közül kiemelkedik a 2016 májusában a jelen pályázat keretében megrendezett budapesti nemzetközi tanácskozás Anthropological Aesthetics in Central Europe 1750–1850 címmel, melyen a magyarokon kívül cseh és német kutatók vettek részt. E konferencia általunk kötetbe szerkesztett (német és angol nyelvű) anyaga hamarosan megjelenik a németországi Wehrhahn kiadónál.
Results in English
During our research process we have fulfilled all appointed challenges. Firstly we have explored papers on aesthetics written in the first century of Hungarian institutionalized aesthetics. Secondly we have assorted them and separated texts with high significance for the history of aesthetic theory. We have digitalized the unpublished or hardly available papers and manuscripts, and supplied them with critical commentaries. Then we have written commentary studies for the critical edition. Manuscript of critical edition is completed, after the required professional review it is ready for publication.
Achievements of our philological and theoretical work we have exposed and discussed in many international and Hungarian conferences, and have presented them by papers published in academic journals and in collective volumes of scientific papers. Most important of conferences was the international assembly organized by sponsorship of our present NKFIH project in Budapest, titled Anthropological Aesthetics in Central Europe 1750–1850, with German, Czech and Hungarian professors and researchers as participants. Papers of that conference are compiled and edited by us in a German and English language conference volume, which will be published at the German publisher Wehrhahn during 2018.
