A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A világ legnagyobb részecskegyorsítója, a Genf melletti Európai Részecskefizikai Laboratóriumban (CERN) található.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), is
located near Geneva, in the European Particle Physics Laboratory (CERN). It
accelerates protons and nuclei with unprecedented energy and lets them collide.
The data recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment allows to
explore the properties of the boson found at a mass of 125 GeV, and for a
detailed study of the weak and strong interactions.

Our research group plans to contribute to the exploration of the properties of
the found boson, and to participate in the discovery of new potential
symmetries of nature (supersymmetry). Also, with the comparative analysis of
elementary and heavy-ion interactions, we will continue to play a leading role
in the understanding of the strong interaction and the high energy density
quark and gluon matter, with the hope to find new, yet unknown effects, scaling
properties.

The tasks performed by our members include the operation and maintenance of
subdetectors, their alignment and calibration, data processing, physics
analyzes, as well as the comparison of results with theoretical models, their
publication and presentation.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Particle physics deals with questions that are fundamental to the understanding
of nature. What are the elementary building blocks
of matter, what interactions operate between them? The particles discovered so
far could be organized with help of gauge theories based on symmetries, which
successfully describe the electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions. The
research of this latter is complex due to its self-interacting nature, and is
mostly driven by experiments.

The outlined picture might be already complete with the observation of the
Higgs-like boson, but we can only be sure after further
measurements. The open questions are: what are
the internal quantum numbers of the found boson; whether its
decay channels comply with the predictions of the
Standard Model; is it an elementary or composite; are there more
particles alike? Although the results of LHC experiments to date have
significantly narrowed the scope of new physics, the high energy (13 TeV) and
high intensity experimental program starting in 2015 could make the detection
of new particles, or exclusion of more theories, possible.

The objective of heavy-ion physics is to characterize the hot and strongly
interacting nuclear matter created in nuclear collisions: among others to
precisely quantify the parton energy loss in this medium; to measure the
suppression of hadrons, heavy mesons, weakly-interacting bosons, jets; and to
elucidate the dependence of these quantities on the centrality of the
collisions. The comparative analysis of proton-proton, proton-nucleus
collisions will help to understand and isolate the collective phenomena
observed in heavy-ion collisions.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

By studying and comparing the collisions of protons and nuclei we will further
explore the properties of the hot and dense nuclear matter, this way we can
understand the early Universe, just some microseconds after the Big Bang. With
a better knowledge about the properties of the new boson, discovery of new
particles, confirmation or rejection of certain models, we can get closer to
answer the open questions of physics and astronomy.

The success of these goals fundamentally depends on the
detector calibration and alignment tasks detailed in the research plan. Our goal is to maintain the high
level of precision in time calibration of the pixel detector, compensate for
its aging effects, understand and get rid of weak modes of the tracker
detector, as well as to improve the alignment precision of the muon detector
system.

Final report

Results in Hungarian
A kutatás a negyenergiás kísérleti fizika széles spektrumát foglalta magában: detektorok tervezése, megépítése, kalibrálása, működtetése, a kiértékelési módszerel fejlesztése, az adatok feldolgozása, és végül a fizikai analízis, az elméletekkel való összehasonlítás és az eredmények közzététele. Hozzájárultunk a CMS együttműködés rendkívül gazdag eredményeihez, különösen a következők szisztematikus vizsgálatokkal. Megfigyeléseink információval szolgálnak a protononban levő gluonok telítési impulzusáról. A pPb ütközésekből szátmazó adatok a nukleáris parton eloszlási függvényekre újabb kényszereket adtak. - Új fizika keresése. A 8 TeV-es adatok feldolgozása alapján a feltételezett szuperszimmetrikus részecskék több fajtájának tömegére új kizárási határértékeket adtunk.
Results in English
The research spanned a very wide spectrum of high-energy experimental physics activities, ranging from detector design, construction, calibration, operations, to development of analysis methods, data processing, and finally physics analysis, comparison to theory, and publication of results. Our contributions to the extremely rich physics harvest of the CMS Collaboration include sytematic studies of - the strong interaction in various collisions systems (pp, pPb, PbPb) through particle spectra and quantum correlations. We have shown that characteristics of particle production are strongly correlated with event multiplicity rather than with center-of-mass energy. These observations provide information on the scale of saturation momentum of gluons in the proton. - the hot and dense matter created in nucleus-nucleus collisions. We have shown that particle production in central PbPb collisions is suppressed up to a factor of 7-8 at high transverse momentum, with respect to proton-proton collisions (parton energy loss). No indication on quenching of jets was found in pPb collisions. - Z boson production in nuclear collisions. We have shown that they are not modified by the hot and dense medium. Data from pPb collisions provide constraints on nuclear parton distribution functions. - and searches for new physics. Our searches gave mass exclusion limits for several types of supersymmetric particles based on the collected 8 TeV data
