A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.
A kvantum színdinamika néhány nem-perturbatív aspektusát kívánjuk vizsgálni
rács szimulációk segítségével. Ezek mind a Dirac operátor kis sajátértekeivel
kapcsolatosak. A kis sajátértékek rácson való kezelése azért problematikus,
mert az általánosan használt fermion diszkretizációk nem rendelkeznek a
kontinuumbeli elmélet királis szimmetriájával. Emiatt a jelen kutatásban
overlap fermionokat használunk, amelyek ugyan sokkal számításigényesebbek, de
bármely véges rácsállandónál megtartják a kontinuumbeli királis szimmetriát.

Két olyan aspektusa van a javasolt kutatásnak, amely lehetővé teszi az igen
számításigényes overlap kvarkok használatát. Az egyik az, hogy a használt
algoritmusokon több javítást tervezünk, a másik pedig az, hogy tervezzük a
számítógép klaszterek fejlesztését. Úgy gondoljuk, hogy javasolt kutatásunk
legfőbb erőssége, hogy nagyrészt rendelkezésre álló infrastruktúrára
(programok, számítógépek, tapasztalat) épül és viszonylag kis fejlesztéssel
olyan kutatás valósítható meg, amely eddig nem volt lehetséges.

Munkánk három fő részből áll:

1) Az algoritmusok fejlesztése

2) A QCD Dirac operátor spektrális statisztikájának vizsgálata az átmeneti
hőmérsékleten és afölött

3) A kvarktömeg és a hőmérsékletn a mértéktér topológiájára gyakorolt
hatásának vizsgálata

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.
A következő javításokat tervezzük az algoritmuson. A QCD
könnyű kvark szektorában három kvark van, az (u,d,s) és ezek
szimulációjához az RHMC algoritmust szokták használni, amely
kevéssé hatékony. Mivel a szimulációt a nulla
töltésűtopológiai szektorban végezzük, lehetőség van a
hatékonyabb HMC algoritmus használatára, ha a Dirac operátor
(négyzetét) megszorítjuk az egyik királis szektorra. A másik
tervezett javítás multigrid invertáló használata clover Wilson
prekondícionálással. Ez várhatóan jelentősen gyorsítja a
Dirac operátor invertálását.

Királis rács fermionok használatával szeretnénk ellenőrizni az
Anderson átmenettel kapcsolatos eddigi eredményeinket, melyeket a
staggered kvarkok segítségével kaptunk. A staggered kvarkok a
kontinuumtól eltérő királis szimmetriával rendelkeznek, ami nem
csak koncepcionális, hanem praktikus problémát is okoz. Ugyanis a
spektrumb alján a dublettek kialakulása torzítja a spektrális
statisztikákat. Ennek elkerülésére az overlap operátor
segítségével fogjuk meghatározni a mobilitási határ
hőmérséklet függését valamint a spektrális statisztika
változását az átmenet körül.

Vizsgálni kívánjuk könnyű kvarkok és a hmérséklet
hatását a mértéktér topologikus fluktuációira. Ehhez ideális
eszköz az overlap használata, ugyanis királis szimmetriája folytán
jól írja le a topológiához csatolódó kis kvark módusokat.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?
Röviden írja le, milyen új perspektívát nyitnak az alapkutatásban az elért eredmények, milyen társadalmi hasznosíthatóságnak teremtik meg a tudományos alapját. Mutassa be, hogy a megpályázott kutatási területen lévő hazai és a nemzetközi versenytársaihoz képest melyek az egyediségei és erősségei a pályázatának!
Kutatásunk alapkutatás jellegű, és így nem várható, hogy a közeljövőben
közvetlen társadalmi haszna lesz az adott tudományterületen kívül. Várható
azonban, hogy jelentős hatása lesz a rács QCD szimulációk módszertanára és
hozzájárul az erős kölcsönhatásra vonatkozó alapvető ismereteink
gyarapodásához.

A szimulációs algoritmuson tervezett javításaink várhatóan be fognak épülni
más királis fermionokkal végezett rács szimulációkba is. A királis fermionok
rácson való szimulálása még gyerekcipőben jár és sok fontos kérdés van,
amelyet érdemes lenne megvizsgálni ezzel a biztos elméleti alapokon álló
módszerrel. A legtöbb fizikai mennyiség esetén például a kontinuum limesz
elvégzése királis fermionokkal még mindig nem lehetséges. Emiatt az algoritmus
bármilyen lényeges javítása biztos, hogy előrehaladást fog okozni ezen a
területen.

Több évtizedes vizsgálatok után is még sok tisztázatlan kérdes van a QCD véges
hőmérsékletű átmenetével kapcsolatban. Jelen kutatásunk, az Anderson átmenet
vizsgálata és a topologikus fluktuációk vizsgálata, hozzá fog járulni az
ámenet természetének jobb megértéséhez. Jelen kutatás mindegyik részében
fontos szerepet játszanak az alacsony kvark módusok, melyek szerepének
tisztázása az átmenetben, fontos kérdés. Ez segíthet abban is, hogy jobban
megértsük a QCD-hez hasonló modellekben végbemenő igazi fázisátalakulásokat.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára. Ez az összefoglaló a döntéshozók, a média, illetve az érdeklődők tájékoztatása szempontjából különösen fontos az NKFI Hivatal számára.
A QCD az erős kölcsönhatás alapvető elmélete. Az erős kölcsönhatásból
származik az az erő, amely a kvarkokat összetartja a hadronokban, például a
protonban és a neutronban, és ez a kölcsönhatás felelős a körülöttünk lévő
anyag tömegének 99%-áért. Jelen kutatásban az erősen kölcsönható anyag
bizonyos tulajdonságait tanulmányozzuk a kvark-gluon plazmába való átmenet
hőmérsékletén és afölött. Ehhez rácstérelméletet használunk, amely az egyetlen
olyan módszer, aminek segítségével az elméletből fizikai mennyiségek
számolhatók szisztematikusan javítható közelítésekkel. A rács-QCD azonban
rendkívül számításigényes terület.

A rács számolások egyik fő nehézsége, hogy a kvarkok legegyszerűbb
diszkretizációi nem rendelkeznek a QCD könnyű kvark szektorának kontinuumbeli
királis szimmetriájával. E szimmetria alacsony hőmérsékleten spontán sérül, a
kvark-gluon plazmába való átmenet során pedig helyreáll. Az átmenet tehát
lényegét tekintve királis átmenet, így tanulmányozásához e szimmetria pontos
figyelembevétele elengedhetetlen.

Jelen munkában kvarkok ``overlap'' diszkretizációját használjuk, amely egzakt
királis szimmetriával rendelkezik, azonban sokkal számításigényesebb, mint a
hagyományos megközelítések. Ehhez szükséges a számítógépes algoritmus és a
számítógépes infrastruktúra fejlesztése. Így lehetővé válik a QCD Dirac
operátora alacsony módusainak és a topologikus töltés fluktuációjának
vizsgálata az átmeneti hőmérséklet közelében és afölött.

Summary

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.
We will study some non-perturbative aspects of quantum chromodynamics
(QCD) using lattice simulations. The phenomena we intend to investigate are
all connected to the small eigenvalues of the QCD Dirac operator. Generally,
the description of small Dirac eigenvalues on the lattice is plagued by the
fact that a continuum-like chiral symmetry cannot be realized on the lattice
with the most generally used (Wilson and staggered) fermion
formulations. To remedy this, in the present project we would like to use the
overlap formulation that has an exact continuum-like chiral symmetry at any
lattice spacing. Although having good chiral properties, the overlap operator
is notoriously demanding to simulate, especially if light dynamical fermions
are involved, as in the present project.

There are two aspects of this project that nevertheless make it feasible to perform
dynamical overlap simulations. First of all we are planning to implement
important algorithmic improvements on our computer codes. Secondly, we are
planning some upgrades on our available computer clusters. We feel that the
main strength of the present proposal is that it builds on available
infrastructure (machines, code, expertise) and relatively minor upgrades
on those make it feasible to undertake studies that were previously not possible.

The work we intend to do has three main components:

1) Algorithmic improvement of the code

2) Study the spectral statistics of the QCD Dirac operator around
and above the transition temperature

3) Study the temperature and quark mass dependence of gauge field topology

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.
We are planning to implement the following algorithmic improvements.
The light quark sector of QCD involves three quark flavors (u,d,s) and
it is traditionally treated using the rational Hybrid Monte Carlo (RHMC)
algorithm which is known to be rather inefficient. Simulating in the
topological charge zero sector makes it possible to use the more efficient HMC
algorithm by restricting the (square of the ) Dirac operator to only one
chirality sector. The other planned improvement is the use of a multigrid
inversion with clover Wilson preconditioning. This is expected to speed up
the Dirac operator inversions significantly.

We use chiral lattice fermions to confirm our results about the
Anderson transition in the QCD Dirac spectrum. Our previous results were
obtained with the staggered formulation that has a chiral symmetry different
from the continuum symmetry. This is not only a conceptual problem but also
a source of a technical problem since the lowest part of the Dirac spectrum is
"contaminated" by pairing effects among the eigenvalues. Using the
theoretically more sound overlap formulation we want to study the temperature dependence
of the mobility edge. We would also like to study the change in spectral
statistics around the transition temperature.

We study the dependence of the topological charge fluctuations
on the quark mass and the temperature in QCD. The overlap formulation, having
exact chiral symmetry, is particularly suitable for this study since it provides a
continuum-like description of the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes. Those are the
ones that govern the coupling of light quarks to topological fluctuations of
the gauge field.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.
The proposed research is basic research and in the near future it is not
foreseen to have a direct impact outside of the scope of basic
science. However, we expect it to improve both lattice QCD methodology and our
knowledge of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions.

The algorithmic improvements that we are planning to implement to make this
project feasible will most likely have a significant impact on other chiral
fermion projects on the lattice. Lattice simulations with chiral fermions are
still in their infancy and several important questions have not been addressed
yet with this theoretically most sound formulation. In particular, performing a
continuum limit for many quantities is still out of reach in this
formulation. Therefore, any significant improvement in the efficiency of
algorithms is most welcome in this field.

After several decades of study, the finite temperature chiral and deconfining
transition in QCD is still not completely understood. Our proposed study of
the Anderson transition in the Dirac spectrum and the impact of dynamical
quarks and high temperature on topology will contribute to a better
understanding of the transition. The unifying theme in our proposal is a
better understanding of the role that the low-lying quark modes play in the
physics of the transition. Gaining information about this might also help to
clarify the properties of this transition in other QCD-like models with
different fermion contents. Some of those models have a genuine finite
temperature phase transition, the understanding of which can put the QCD
transition in a broader context.

Summary and aims of the research for the public

Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is the fundamental theory of
the strong interactions. Strong interactions provide the force that binds
quarks in hadrons like the proton and the neutron and it is also this
interaction that is responsible for 99% of the mass of ordinary matter around
us. We would like to study the properties of strongly interacting matter
around and above the finite temperature transition to the quark-gluon plasma.
For this, we use lattice gauge theory, the only available
method to extract physical quantities from the fundamental theory using
systematically controlled approximations. Lattice QCD involves highly
demanding large scale computer simulations.

One of the difficulties of discretizing QCD on the lattice is that the
simplest quark discretizations do not respect the (approximate) chiral
symmetry of the light quark sector of QCD. Chiral symmetry is
spontaneously broken at low temperature and gets restored at the
cross-over to the quark-gluon plasma state. Thus the cross-over is essentially
a chiral transition, and a proper treatment of chiral symmetry is essential.

We intend to use a particular chiral lattice quark discretization, the so called
overlap. Since it is much more demanding than the most commonly used fermion
fermion formulation, we need to improve our
simulation algorithms and also need an upgrade of our computer clusters to
make this study feasible. With these improvements we are planning to study the
spectral statistics of the low-lying eigenmodes of the Dirac operator and the
and the interaction between light quarks and topological charge fluctuations
of the gauge field around the transition temperature.

Összefoglaljuk a projekt három legfontosabb eredményét. 1) Részben a továbbfejlesztett overlap algoritmusunk használatával sikerült meghatároznunk a QCD topologikus szuszceptibilitását a véges hőmérsékletű átmenet fölötti széles hőmérséklet-tartományban. Ez lehetővé tette, hogy becslést adjunk az axion nevű hipotetikus részecske tömegére. Ezt az eredményünket a Nature-ben publikáltuk. 2) Megmutattuk, hogy a dinamikus fermionok nélküli QCD-ben pontosan a fázisátalakulási hőmérsékletnél jelennek meg a Dirac operátor spektrumában az első lokalizált állapotok. Ezt először staggered kvarkok segítségével mutatuk ki, majd megerősítettük az eredményt overlap kvarkok használatával is. Az overlap Dirac spektrumok lehetővé tették annak tanulmányozását, hogy a mértéktér topológiája hogyan befolyásolja a Dirac spektrum legalsó tartományát. 3) Tanulmányoztuk külső mágneses tér hatását a QCD véges hőmérsékletű átmenetére. Tettük ezt abból a célból, hogy további támpontokat adjunk a QCD-t közelítő alacsonyenergiás effektív elméletek konstruálásához. Meghatároztuk a kvarkok első Landau szintjének járulékát különböző fizikai mennyiségekhez. Tanulmányoztuk, hogy a kvarktömeg hogyan befolyásolja a mágneses (inverz) katalízis jelenségét.

Results in English

This is a summary of the three most important results of the project. 1) Using our optimized algorithm for the overlap fermion discretization we managed to compute the topological susceptibility of QCD in a wide range of temperatures above the finite temperature cross-over. This enabled us to make a prediction for the possible mass of the axion, presently a hypothetical particle. This result was published in Nature. 2) We showed that the first localized modes in the Dirac spectrum of quenched QCD appear exactly at the deconfinement transition. Our initial result was obtained with staggered fermions and later we confirmed it with overlap fermions. The overlap Dirac spectra also enabled us to study the connection of low Dirac eigenmodes to gauge field topology. 3) With the aim of helping to construct better low-energy effective theories of QCD, we studied the effect of an external magnetic field on the finite temperature cross-over of QCD. We determined the contribution of the first Landau level to some physical quantities and also studied how the quark mass affects (inverse) magnetic catalysis.
