A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára. Az itt javasolt kutatás a referencialitás nyelvtani kódolásának és a magyar főnévi kifejezések belső szerkezetének történeti változatásait kívánja tanulmányozni és elemezni. A korábbi és a jelenlegi kutatások eredményeit egy monográfia fogja összefoglalni, amely tömör, ámde átfogó jellegéből adódóan referenciaműként szolgálhat a jövőben. A további kutatások elősegítése érdekében a kötet olyan formában tartalmazza majd az elemzéseket, amely a lehető legszélesebb közönség számára teszi a tartalmat befogadhatóvá. Kiemelt témát képez a referencialitás jelölése, a főnévi kifejezésen belül található, különböző típusú módosítók és ezek szerkezeti változásai a nyelvtörténeti korszakokban. További célkitűzés a korábban megfogalmazott hipotézisek finomítása és új hipotézisek felállítása, illetve e kutatás eredményeinek hazai és nemzetközi konferenciákon való ismertetése, publikálása. Az MTA Nyelvtudomány Intézetben fejlesztett és fejlesztés alatt álló történeti korpuszok képezik a kutatás empirikus alapját. Ezek segítésével meglehetősen nagy adatmennyiség áll rendelkezésre a hipotézisek tesztelésére. A javasolt kutatás tematikusan kapcsolódó kutatócsoportokkal való szoros együttműködésben fog megvalósulni, és erősen támaszkodik a pályázó legutóbbi kutatási eredményeire is. Ilyen értelemben az itt javasolt kutatási terv a 2017 augusztusában lezárandó A magyar főnévi kifejezések és determinánsok történeti és összehasonlító nyelvészeti vizsgálata (OTKA/NKFI PD 112828) c. pályázat természetes folytatásának tekinthető.
Mi a kutatás alapkérdése? Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek. A leíró és elméleti szemléletet egyesítő javaslatnak megfelelően a tervezett kutatás két egységre bontható: i.) a magyar főnévi kifejezések történeti nyelvtanának összeállítása; ii.) a magyar főnévi kifejezések szerkezetére vonatkozó korábbi hipotézisek finomítása, illetve új javaslatok megfogalmazása a strukturális változások modellezésére. Az áttekinthető szerkezetű, átfogó monográfia egyrészt az eddigi kutatási eredmények összefoglalására, másrészt a leíró hagyományban fellelhető hézagok kitöltése érdekében készül. Az új kutatási kérdések pedig alapvetően a határozottság és referencialitás összefüggéseit érintik a birtoklással és a módosítók különböző fajtáival. A határozott névelő grammatikalizációs folyamatának eddig elégtelenül kezelt kérdéseivel új megközelítésben foglalkozom, méghozzá a determinánsok és a névmási birtokosok kombinációjának vizsgálatával ún. asszociatív-anaforikus kontextusokban. Emellett kiemelt kutatási témáim lesznek a referenciális elemet tartalmazó komplex módosítók, illetve specifikus kvantorok egy új csoportjának a megjelenése. Ezek a vizsgálatok, akárcsak a korábbi eredmények monografikus összefoglalása tökéletesen kiegészítik a mai magyar névszói kifejezések leírására és modern elméleti keretbe helyezett, formális elemzésére tett erőfeszítéseket. Ezen felül a kutatás a mondattani változások mechanizmusainak általános megértéséhez is hozzá kíván járulni.
Mi a kutatás jelentősége? Röviden írja le, milyen új perspektívát nyitnak az alapkutatásban az elért eredmények, milyen társadalmi hasznosíthatóságnak teremtik meg a tudományos alapját. Mutassa be, hogy a megpályázott kutatási területen lévő hazai és a nemzetközi versenytársaihoz képest melyek az egyediségei és erősségei a pályázatának! A javasolt kutatás egyrészt a határozottság és referencialitás összefüggéseit vizsgálja a birtoklással és a főnévi kifejezésen belül található módosítók típusaival, másrészt a magyar nyelv történetében megfigyelhető szerkezeti változásokat kívánja egy monográfiában összefoglalni. Ezek az összehasonlító nyelvészeti és tipológiai kutatások számára is alapvető vizsgálatok a nyelvi változások mechanizmusának jobb megértését eredményezik, mind magyar, mind általános nyelvészeti szempontból. A két fő célkitűzésnek megfelelően az eredmények közzététele is két formában történik. A digitális történet korpuszoknak köszönhetően nagy mennyiségű adat képezi a monográfia empirikus alapját, amely áttekinthető szerkezetével és átfogó jellegénél fogva, illetve az elemzések lehető legáltalánosabb prezentálásával széles közönség számára lesz elérhető. Így nemcsak a további kutatások alapjául szolgálhat majd, hanem oktatási céloknak is kitűnően megfelel. Egyelőre hiányzik egy olyan átfogó leírásokat és elemzéseket tartalmazó összefoglalása ennek a témának, amely a mondattani vizsgálatok szempontjából releváns (hozzávetőleg 800 évet átfogó), teljes korszakra kiterjedne. Egy ilyen jellegű kutatás tehát tökéletesen kiegészítheti a mai magyar főnévi kifejezések leírására és modern elméleti keretbe helyezett, formális elemzésére tett erőfeszítéseket. Az elméleti eredmények általános nyelvészeti és tipológiai szempontból is fontos adalékokkal szolgálnak, így ezek nemzetközi folyóiratokban és tematikus kötetekben kerülnek publikálásra. Az MTA Nyelvtudomány Intézetben fejlesztett és fejlesztés alatt álló történeti korpuszok képezik a kutatás empirikus alapját. A kutatás szoros együttműködésre törekszik a tematikusan kapcsolódó kutatócsoportokkal, mindenekelőtt a Magyar Generatív Történeti szintaxis 2 (OTKA/NKFI K 112057) projekt munkatársaival, továbbá a párhuzamosan benyújtott Uráli nyelvek névszói szerkezetei (NKFI FK 125206) c. projekttel, amelynek jelen pályázó is résztvevője, illetve vezető kutatója.
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára. Ez az összefoglaló a döntéshozók, a média, illetve az érdeklődők tájékoztatása szempontjából különösen fontos az NKFI Hivatal számára. A kutatás a határozott névelő és a főneveket központi elemként tartalmazó kifejezések alaki tulajdonságaival és használatával kapcsolatos kérdéseket vizsgálja a magyar nyelv történeti korszakaiban. Részletes leírások és beható elemzések segítségével bemutatja, hogy idővel hogyan változnak meg ezek a szerkezetek az első, kéziratos kódexek korától a 20. századig bezárólag. A pályázó sok éves tapasztalattal rendelkezik a javasolt kutatási témában, számos olyan kutatócsoportok munkájában vett részt, amelyek a magyar nyelv szerkezeti tulajdonságaival foglalkoznak. A támogatott kutatási időszak lehetőséget nyújt egy átfogó kézikönyv megírására, amely a korábbi vizsgálatok eredményeit és a legújabb kutatásokat foglalja össze, és különböző nyelvészeti területeken, illetve az oktatásban is referenciaműként szolgálhat. A nyelvi adatok kigyűjtését és rendszerezését a nyelvtörténeti forrásokat digitális és kereshető formában tartalmazó, szabad hozzáférésű adatbázisok segítik elő. Továbbá a magyar adatokat mind rokon nyelvek, mind más nyelvcsaládokba tartozó nyelvek hasonló szerkezeteivel összevetve az emberi nyelvek változásának általános megértéséhez is közelebb kerülhetünk.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts Describe the major aims of the research for experts. The project aims to study and to analyze how the grammatical encoding of referentiality and the internal syntax of Hungarian noun phrases changed over time. A monograph will be compiled that summarizes the relevant results of the previous and current research. The volume will serve as a grammar of reference and is aimed to be concise and comprehensive. Analyses will be provided in a form that makes the results accessible to readers from any background, also offering a basis for further research. Major topics include the grammatical marking of reference, different types of adnominal modification, and their structural changes through the historical language stages. The project also aims to refine previously established hypotheses and to present new suggestions. New theoretical results will be presented at Hungarian and international conferences and published in a series of papers. The empirical basis of the research is provided by the historical corpora that have been and are being developed at the Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. With the help of the digitized corpora, earlier claims and new proposals will be checked against a considerable amount of original language data. The proposal also heavily relies on co-operation with partner projects, as well as recent research work of the applicant. Accordingly, the proposal is a natural extension of the individual research project Diachronic and comparative linguistic study of Hungarian noun phrases and determiners (OTKA/NKFI PD 112828), which is scheduled to be completed in August 2017.
What is the major research question? Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments. The proposal has both descriptive and theoretical aspects, and, accordingly, the project has two main objectives: i) to compile a concise monograph about the historical grammar of the Hungarian noun phrase; ii) to refine previously established hypotheses concerning the structure of the Hungarian noun phrase, as well as to offer new analyses as to how the changes in its structure can be modeled. The monograph will summarize many earlier results in a structured and comprehensive manner with the aim of filling the gaps in traditional descriptive literature. The new research questions may principally be grouped around the issue of how definiteness and referentiality are related to possession and adnominal modification. I propose to consider the so called associative-anaphoric contexts when studying the combination of determiners and pronominal possessors in Old and Middle Hungarian, which will shed light on some details of the grammaticalization path of the definite article that have not yet been accounted for in an adequate manner. Complex adnominal modifiers with a referent-anchoring element will also be studies, as well as the rise of a new set of specific quantifiers. Such investigations and the monographic summary of the earlier results will perfectly complement recent endeavors to describe the grammar of noun phrases in present-day Hungarian, as well as the analyses in a modern, formal linguistic approach. The research also aims to contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms of syntactic change from a cross-linguistic perspective.
What is the significance of the research? Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field. The proposed research will study how definiteness and referentiality are related to possession and adnominal modification and will produce a concise grammar book about the syntactic changes in Hungarian. These serve as essential resources for comparative and typological studies, as well as for understanding in a better way the mechanisms of language change both in Hungarian and in general. The expected results will be disseminated in two forms, in accordance with the two main objectives of the project. The major product of the project will be a grammar of reference, which is aimed to be clearly structured and comprehensive. Thanks to digital corpora, descriptions will be based on an extensive quantity of original language data. Analyses will be provided in a plain form, to make the results accessible to readers from any background and to provide a basis for further research. The volume will be available for educational purposes as well. A comprehensive description combined with an insightful analysis of the structure of noun phrases from a diachronic perspective (that considers the whole period of approx. 800 years, relevant for a syntactic study) is entirely missing. Such an investigation and a monographic summary of its results will nicely complement recent descriptive works and formal analyses of the structure of noun phrases in present-day Hungarian. New results of the more theoretical part of the research will be submitted to international journals or thematic edited volumes, since addressing these research questions is highly relevant for cross-linguistic studies, both from a typological and from a theoretical perspective. The empirical basis of the research is provided by the historical corpora that have been and are being developed at the Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and also heavily relies on co-operation with partner projects, first of all the Hungarian Generative Diachronic Syntax 2 (OTKA/NKFI K 112057), and the concurrently proposed Nominal Structures in Uralic Languages (NKFI FK 125206), the principal investigator of which is the present applicant.
Summary and aims of the research for the public Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others. The project will address important research questions about the form and the use of definite articles and expressions with a noun as its central element in the historical language stages of Hungarian. Through a detailed description and an insightful analysis of the linguistic phenomena, it will be demonstrated how these constructions changed over time from the first, hand-written codices to the 20th century. The applicant has been working for years in research projects studying the structure of the Hungarian language. The results of the previous studies and the new investigations will be summarized in a concise and comprehensive handbook that can be used as a grammar of reference in various subfields of linguistic studies as well as in education. The collection and arrangement of data is supported by digitized and searchable databases of historical linguistic records, available for public use. Furthermore, Hungarian data will be compared to similar constructions both in closely related and unrelated languages as the research also aims to reveal how human languages change in general.

A kutatás célkitűzése egy monográfia összeállítása volt a magyar főnévi kifejezések szerkezettörténetéről, ezen belül az ó- és középmagyar főnévi kifejezések nyelvtanának pontos leírásáról, illetve a szerkezeti felépítésében megfigyelhető változások dokumentálása és elemzése. A szerkezetek történetére vonatkozó korábbi hipotéziseket teszteltem, pontosítottam, és új javaslatokkal egészítettem ki.
A kutatás eredményeinek közzététele még folyamatban van, a monográfia még nem készült el. Jelenleg nyolc nagy fejezetre oszlik (Elméleti és módszertani bevezető, A főnevek és a főnévi kifejezések általános tulajdonságai, Névmások, Kvalitatív módosítás, Kvantitatív módosítás, Lokatív módosítás, Determinánsok, és Koordináció, diszjunkció és appozíció), a tartalmi részt pedig két függelék, egy tárgymutató, egy irodalomjegyzék s egy forrásjegyzék egészíti ki. Az adatok gyűjtését és rendszerezését a hagyományos filológia módszerek mellett a digitalizált ó- és középmagyar korpuszok segítették. A kutatások és azok összegzése kifejezetten arra törekszik, hogy kiegészítse a mai magyar névszói kifejezések leírására és modern elméleti keretbe helyezett, formális elemzésére tett erőfeszítéseket. Ezen felül a kutatás a mondattani változások mechanizmusainak általános megértéséhez is hozzá kíván járulni.

The aim of the project was to compile a monograph about the structural history of the Hungarian noun phrase, describing the grammatical properties of the Old and Middle Hungarian noun phrases as well as documenting and analyzing the syntactic and semantic changes that can be observed in their structure. The previously established hypotheses have been tested refined and complemented with new suggestions.
The results of the research is still to be published as the manuscript has not been completed yet. At present, the volume is divided into eight chapters (An introductory chapter on theoretical background and methods, General properties of nouns and noun phrases, Pronouns, Qualitative modifiers, Quantitative modifiers, Locative modifiers, Determiners, Coordination, disjunction and apposition), which are complemented by two appendices, an index, a bibliography, and a list of primary sources with references. The collection and arrangement of data through traditional philological methods have been complemented with the use of the digitized corpora of Old and Middle Hungarian texts.
The investigations and their monographic summary aim to match with some recent endeavors to describe and analyze the syntax of present-day Hungarian in a modern, formal linguistic approach. The research also aspires to contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms of syntactic change from a cross-linguistic perspective.
