Summary in Hungarian A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.
Kapisztrán János, a 15. századi ferences obszervancia kiemelkedő alakja majdnem 700 darabra tehető levelezést hagyott hátra. Sajnos azonban az olaszországi Capestrano kolostorában fennmaradt eredeti levelek állapota rohamosan romlik, ugyanakkor kiadásuk csak részlegesen valósult meg, szétszórt és ma már elavult kiadásokban. Célunk Kapisztrán magyarországi, illetve magyarokkal folytatott levelezésének teljes szövegű, modern forráskiadási elveknek megfelelő publikálása, együttműködve a maguk országára vonatkozó levelezést kiadni szándékozó cseh, francia, lengyel és olasz kollégákkal. A Kapisztrán magyarországi tartózkodásának kezdete (1455 május 18.) előtti időszakra vonatkozóan csak magyar származású, illetve magyar egyházi vagy világi méltóságot viselő személyekkel folytatott levelezését közölnénk, ezt követően pedig minden általa írt és általa kapott levelet egészen 1456 október 23-án bekövetkezett haláláig. Az ismert levelek kiadása, jó eséllyel néhány eddig lappangó levél megismerését is jelentené. Munkánk eredményeként a hazai és a külföldi kollégák által jól hasznosítható, korszerű forráskiadás látna napvilágot, amely a külföldi kollégák által kiadott kötetekkel együtt egységes elvek szerint tenné közzé a 15. század közepének eme egyedülállóan koherens és mégis szerteágazó forrásanyagát. A forrásanyag jellege lehetővé teszi azt is, hogy bepillantást nyerjünk a korabeli világi és egyházi politika egyik legkiterjedtebb, európai léptékű kapcsolatrendszerébe. Ezt a kapcsolatrendszert a egy, a szélesebb közönség számára is érdekes honlapon mutatnánk be, ami egyúttal a projekt kommunikációs felületeként is szolgálna.
Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.
Vállalkozásunk egyik kiindulópontja, hogy látszik esély még nem ismert Kapisztrán-levelek felkutatására. Ezért okmánytárak, 17. századi, esetleg föl nem használt másolatgyűjtemények és a Ottokar Bonmann Amerikában, a St. Bonaventure egyetemen őrzött hagyatékának átvizsgálásával megpróbáljuk bővíteni az ismert levelek körét. E mellett legalább olyan fontos, hogy valamennyi számunkra releváns levél egységes, korszerű apparátus által kísért, a hazai valamint a külföldi kutatók számára jól hasznosítható kiadását valósítjuk meg. Mivel az anyag lényegénél fogva nemzetközi, csak külföldi kollégákkal együttműködve lehet teljeségre törekvő és koherens módon kiadni, amihez meg kell állapodnunk a kiadás pontos alapelveiben, a levelek egymás közötti felosztásában, a kereshetőség érdekében a személy- hely- méltóság- és intézménynevek egységes alkalmazásában. A feladat sürgető, ugyanis a zömmel Capestranóban található eredeti levelek állapota, amint az a Hadtörténeti Múzeum munkatársainak 2006-os látogatása alkalmával kiderült, állandóan romlik, tehát azon levelek kiadása, amelyekről nem rendelkezünk jó minőségű digitális másolattal, pár év múlva esetleg már nem lesz lehetséges.
Mi a kutatás jelentősége?
Röviden írja le, milyen új perspektívát nyitnak az alapkutatásban az elért eredmények, milyen társadalmi hasznosíthatóságnak teremtik meg a tudományos alapját. Mutassa be, hogy a megpályázott kutatási területen lévő hazai és a nemzetközi versenytársaihoz képest melyek az egyediségei és erősségei a pályázatának!
A levelezők rangjának és társadalmi helyzetének sokfélesége miatt a levelek jól használhatók a politika-, az egyház-, a társadalom- és a vallástörténet kutatása szempontjából. Kapisztrán János a keresztes hadjáratok szervezése és propagálása, az obszerváns reform terjesztése, az eretnekségek elleni küzdelem során személyében kapcsolta össze Európa több régióját. Tevékenysége katalizálta a magyar arisztokrácia egyházpolitikai és vallási törekvéseit, ugyanakkor a formálta a kisnemesség, a parasztság és a városi-mezővárosi lakosság különféle köreinek vallási felfogását is. Levelezése ezért fényt vet Magyarország és más közép-európai területek viszonyára, a magyar-pápai kapcsolatokra, hazánk egyházpolitikai, társadalmi és vallási viszonyaira. Továbbá igen alkalmas forrásbázist jelent a társadalmi-politikai kapcsolathálók megismeréséhez, illetve az ezeken keresztül ható meggyőzés, befolyásolás és propaganda elemzéséhez. Meggyőződésünk, hogy tervezett munkánk hozzájárulna annak a kölcsönhatásnak a jobb megértéséhez, amely a közép-európai régió 15-16. századi történetében nagyon fontos szerepet játszó ferences obszervancia és a régió egyszerre hasonló, mégis igen sokszínű társadalmi, politikai és vallási közegei között alakult ki.
Kiadásunk a bevezető tanulmányok útmutatásaival, az eredeti levelek őrzési helyének megadásával és az eddigi kiadások feltüntetésével segítené a kutatók eligazodását a korábbi szakirodalomban is. A magyar és angol nyelvű regeszták, a részletes jegyzetapparátus és a mutatók pedig a célirányos kutatást szolgálnák.
A levelek kiadása olyan digitális adatbázis létrehozásával jár együtt, amelyet a későbbiekben több szempont alapján is kereshetővé lehetne tenni és összekapcsolni más adatbázisokkal ‒ elsősorban azokkal, amelyeket külföldi kollégáink a más országokban keletkezett Kapisztrán-levelekkel kapcsolatban hoznak létre.
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára. Ez az összefoglaló a döntéshozók, a média, illetve az érdeklődők tájékoztatása szempontjából különösen fontos az NKFI Hivatal számára.
Az utóbbi évtizedekben a késő középkorral kapcsolatos történeti kutatások terén felértékelődött a vallási mozgalmak, köztük a ferences obszervancia komplex -- társadalmi, gazdasági, egyházpolitikai és kulturális – jelentőségének vizsgálata. Kapisztrán János (1386-1456), a rend kiemelkedő alakjaként fontos szerepet játszott a korabeli Európa egyház- és politikatörténetében, és jelentős érdemeket szerzett a nándorfehérvári ütközetben. Levelezése egyedülállóan gazdag és sokrétű, az általa írt és a neki szóló összesen majdnem 700 levél számos ország -- köztük Magyarország -- történetének fontos forrása. A levelek jól használhatók a politikai, az egyház-, a társadalom-, a vallástörténet kutatása szempontjából, viszont nehezen hozzáférhetők, ugyanis csak részben, régi és szétszórt kiadásokban jelentek meg, ráadásul számos, az olaszországi Capestranóban őrzött eredeti levél állapota rohamosan romlik. Ezért sürgető feladat a levelek lehető legteljesebb számú és egységes és modern elveket követő kiadása. Célunk, hogy megjelentessük Kapisztrán János hazánkban keletkezett, illetve az itteni tartózkodása során neki címzett mintegy 100 levelét egy nemzetközi együttműködés keretében, előbb lengyel, majd cseh, francia és olasz kollégákkal országok szerint felosztva a levelezést. A leveleket nyomtatott formában, eredeti (latin) nyelven szeretnénk közölni, a kutatás számára nélkülözhetetlen apparátussal együtt. Munkánkat a szélesebb közönség számára is hozzáférhetővé kívánjuk tenni egy honlap segítségével, valamint a külföldi és belföldi kollégáinkkal való tapasztalatcsere céljából két konferenciát szervezzünk, amelyek eredményeit publikálni is szándékozunk.

John of Capestrano, a major figure of the Franciscan Observance in the fifteenth century, has left behind a correspondence of almost 700 items. Unfortunately, however, the letters kept in the convent of Capestrano in Italy are exposed to constant deterioration, while their edition has remained partial and is available in scattered and outdated publications only. Our goal is to publish, according to modern principles of edition, the full text of John’s correspondence with Hungarians or from Hungary, in cooperation with our Czech, French, Italian, and Polish colleagues working on the correspondence related to their own countries. As to the period before the beginning of John’s stay in Hungary (18 May 1445), we would only publish his correspondence with persons born, or holding office in Hungary, but all letters sent or received by him in the period thereafter, until his death on 23 October 1456. The edition of known letters could imply, with a high degree of probability, the discovery of some latent ones as well. We hope that our work would result in the publication of an up-to-date source edition useful both for Hungarian and foreign scholars, which would make available – together with the volumes published by our colleagues abroad – this ramifying but particularly coherent source material of the mid fifteenth century. The nature of the source material also allows us to have an insight into one of the most extensive networks of personal contacts of a European scale in contemporary ecclesiastical and secular politics. This network of personal contacts, will be exhibited for a broader public in a webpage, which will also serve as the communication interface of the project.
What is the major research question?

One of the starting points of our project is that there is still some chance to discover hitherto unknown letters of John of Capestrano. For this reason, we will try to expand the corpus of known letters through sifting the material in collections of published charters and in seventeenth-century compilations of copies left out of consideration so far, as well as in the Ottokar Bonmann papers kept in St. Bonaventure University, St. Bonaventure NY. Apart from this it is equally important to produce a unitary edition of all relevant letters with up-to-date textual apparatus, which will be useful for both Hungarian and foreign scholars. Since the material is international by nature, it cannot be published in a comprehensive and coherent manner if not in cooperation with colleagues abroad; in order to do this, we have to agree on the precise principles of edition, the division of letters among us, and – for the sake of searchability – the homogenous use of names of persons, places, offices, and institutions. The task is urgent as the condition of original letters mostly kept in Capestrano is deteriorating constantly – as it turned out during a visit of a group of staff from the Budapest Museum of Military History in 2006 – thus, in a few years, the edition of letters not available in high-quality digital copies will not, conceivably, be possible anymore.
What is the significance of the research?

Given the diversity of correspondents in terms of rank and social condition, the letters are useful for the study of political, ecclesiastical, social, and religious history. In organizing and propagating crusades, spreading the observant reform, and fighting heresy, John of Capestrano connected several regions of Europe through his own person. His activities catalyzed the aspirations of the Hungarian aristocracy in religion and church policy and, simultaneously, shaped the religious outlook of various circles of the petty nobility, the peasantry and the population of towns and cities. Hence his correspondence sheds light on the connections between Hungary and other Central European territories, its relationship to the papacy, as well church policy, social relations, and religion in Hungary. At the same time, it provides a particularly suitable source material for the study of socio-political networks, and for analyzing how persuasion, influence and propaganda worked in them. We are convinced that our proposed work would contribute to a better understanding of those interactions, which emerged between the Franciscan Observance, a very important factor in the history of Central Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries, and the similar but also quite diverse social, political, and religious milieus of this region. Our edition would help researchers in finding their ways to the earlier scholarly literature as well through the guidance of the introductory studies, through providing the places of preservation of original letters, and through references to earlier editions. In addition, the Hungarian and English regestae, the detailed notes, and the indices would serve goal-oriented research. The edition of the letters involves the creation of a database, which could subsequently be made searchable on the basis of different criteria, and compatible with other databases, primarily with those made by our colleagues abroad about John’s correspondence in other countries.
Summary and aims of the research for the public

In the last decades, studies of the complex – social, economic, ecclesiastico-political, and cultural – significance of religious movements, with the Franciscan Observance among them, have reached prominence in historical research about the Middle Ages. John of Capestrano (1386-1456) as a major figure of the Order played an important role in the ecclesiastical and political history of Europe in the period, and gained considerable merits in the battle of Belgrade. His correspondence is uniquely rich and complex, the almost 700 letters written by and to him are important sources for the history of several countries including Hungary. The letters are useful for the study of political, ecclesiastical, social, and religious history but are difficult to access as they have been published in old and scattered editions, and, moreover, several letters kept in Capestrano are in a constantly deteriorating condition. Hence it is an urgent task to edit the fullest possible number of letters following unitary and modern principles. Our goal is to publish John’s roughly 100 letters written to or by him during his stay in Hungary, collaborating first with Polish, then with Czech, French, and Italian colleagues, dividing the correspondence between the respective countries. We would like to publish the letters in print, in original (Latin) language, together with a textual apparatus indispensable for research. We would also like to make our work available for a broader audience through a webpage, and in order to facilitate scholarly exchange with our colleagues in Hungary and abroad we plan to organize two conferences, the results of which we intend to publish as well.
