A Herman Ottó Múzeum kutatási programja Falu a városban címmel a 19–20. századi magyarországi urbanizáció és paraszti polgárosodás folyamatainak lokális-regionális feltárását célozta, Miskolc város és a környező egykori falvak, később városrésszé váló települések (kiemelten Görömböly-Tapolca, Hejőcsaba és Szirma) kulturális kapcsolatainak komplex társadalomtörténeti, várostörténeti, néprajzi és kulturális antropológiai vizsgálatával.
A kutatócsoport a városfejlődés folyamatainak modell értékű példájaként egy történeti és néprajzi alapkutatás keretében dolgozta fel a Miskolchoz csatolt városrészek társadalmi-kulturális változásait a 19-20. században. Ehhez megalapozó kutatásként kapcsolódott a vizsgált települések középkori és kora újkori történeti forrásanyagának feltárása.
A projektben megvalósult három saját rendezésű országos konferencia Miskolcon, amelyeken elhangzott 29 konferenciaelőadás- és poszter. A projektben részt vevő 8 kutató összesen 21 folyóiratcikket és szaktanulmányt publikált. Legfontosabb publikáció a kutatást összegző záró tanulmánykötet, amely 2024-ben jelent meg 300 nyomtatott példányban, 512 oldalon. A kutatás során feltárt közgyűjteményi forrásokat egy nyílt hozzáférésű kutatói adatbázisban publikáltuk a Herman Ottó Múzeum honlapján.
Az elvégzett munka messze túlmutat Miskolc várostörténetén: az urbanizáció kelet-közép-európai folyamatainak általánosan is érvényes tanulságait alapozzák meg a projektben megjelent tudományos publikációk.

The aim of the Herman Ottó Museum’s research programme titled ‘Village in the town’ was to investigate the local and regional processes of Hungarian urbanization and the embourgeoisement of the peasantry in the 19th-20th centuries through complex historical, ethnographic and cultural anthropological analysis of the cultural relations between the city of Miskolc and the nearby villages that later became town districts (particularly Görömböly-Tapolca, Hejőcsaba and Szirma).
The group conducted fundamental historical and ethnographic research on the social-cultural shifts of the districts annexed by Miskolc in the 19th-20th centuries. This was accompanied by another research focusing on the medieval and early modern historical sources of the settlements.
Three self-organized national conferences were held in Miskolc as part of the project, where a total of 29 conference talks were given. The 8 partaking researchers published a total of 21 articles and studies. The most important publication is the collection of studies focusing on the culmination of the research; it consists of 512 pages and 300 copies of it were published in 2024. The public collection sources uncovered during the research were published on an open-access database on the website of the Herman Ottó Museum.
The scope of the completed work goes beyond the urban history of Miskolc: the scientific publications of the project provide generally applicable lessons on the urbanization processes of Central-Eastern Europe.
