AAz új molekuláris technikák, különösen a metagenomika, rengeteg új vírusszekvenciát tártak fel. A Nemzetközi Vírustaxonómiai Bizottság (ICTV) úgy döntött, hogy ezek alapján hivatalos vírusfajokat lehet létrehozni. Az ICTV Végrehajtó Bizottságának tagjaként (az Állati DNS-vírusok és retrovírusok albizottságának elnökeként) és néhány tanulmányi csoportjának elnökeként/tagjaként célunk volt a vírustaxonómia megújítása, és a víruscsaládokról szóló új összefoglaló munkák megjelentetése. Mi írtuk az Adenoviridae fejezetet, részt vettünk a Herpesviridae előkészítésében, és ezekben az években további 10 fejezetet én szerkesztettem az állati DNS-vírusokról, retrovírusokról és szatellitjeikről. PCR, metagenomika, vírusizolálás, bioinformatika segítségével számos, korábban ismeretlen vírusszekvenciát mutattunk ki és jellemeztünk házi és vadon élő állatokból, hogy feltárjuk a diverzitásukat. Számos taxonómiai javaslatot tettünk, és a 2019-2020-as időszakban az albizottságban az összes többi javaslatot is kezeltem/szerkesztettem. Hatékonyan hozzájárultunk a vírusszisztematika megújításához: a vírustaxonok korábbi 5 szintje helyett ma már 15 szint használható, és a korábban különálló víruscsaládok ma már 6 önállóan kialakult birodalomba tartoznak. Így láthatjuk a vírusok rövid és hosszú távú evolúcióját és rokonságát. Minden faj új, binomiális nevet kapott. Az adenovírusokhoz latinizált neveket, a herpeszvírusokhoz és a cirkovírusokhoz szabad formátumú binomiális neveket javasoltunk.

New molecular techniques, especially metagenomics, have revealed a wealth of new viral sequences. The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) has decided that these can be a basis for the establishment of official virus species. As a member of the Executive Committee of the ICTV (chair of the Subcommittee on Animal DNA Viruses and Retroviruses) and chair/member of some of its study groups, our aim was to renew the virus taxonomy, and publish new summary works (reports) on all virus families here. We wrote the chapter Adenoviridae, participated in preparing Herpesviridae, and I edited 10 more chapters on animal DNA viruses, retroviruses and their satellites during these years. Using PCR, metagenomics, virus isolation, bioinformatics, we detected and characterized many previously unknown viral sequences from domestic and wild animals to reveal their diversity. We made numerous taxonomical proposals, and I handled/edited also all the other proposals in the Subcommittee in 2019-2020. We have effectively contributed to the renewal of virus systematics: instead of the previous 5 levels of virus taxa, 15 levels can now be used, and previously separate virus families now belong to 6 realms arisen independently. Thus, we can see the short- and long-term evolutionary patterns and relationships of viruses. All species has been renamed by binomial names. We proposed Latinised names for adenoviruses, and free form binomials for herpesviruses or circoviruses.
