Az állam és a jog – melyeket „intézményeknek”, „normáknak”, „társadalmi gyakorlatnak” vagy „általános eszméknek” szokás tartani – nem az érzékileg megtapasztal-ható jelenségek közé tartoznak. Egységes egészként való létezésükre – a fogalmi bizonyosságon túl – egyfelől a „társadalmi gyakorlat” megfigyelése révén, másfelől abból következtetünk, hogy valahol valaki valahogyan megjelenítette és megjeleníti őket. Ábrázolják, megjelenítik, s ezzel valamilyen módon jelenvalóvá és itt-lévővé teszik; azaz re-prezentálják. E kötet azt mutatja be, hogy e reprezentációnak az elmúlt évszázadokban az állam, a jog és a jogtudomány esetében a vizualitás terén melyek voltak, illetőleg korunkban melyek a legjellegzetesebb megnyilvánulásai. A válogatás elsősorban a vizuális kultúra egy-egy metszetében láttatja tárgyát, s teszi ezt úgy, hogy e metszetek körét, sorát és jellegét elsősorban a tárgy jellemző vonásai és a képi vizualitás már adott lehetőségei, nem pedig a megjelenítés műfaji sajátosságai határozzák meg.

The state and law – which are usually considered “institutions”, “norms”, “social practice” or “general ideas” – are not among the phenomena that can be experienced sensibly. Their existence as a unified whole – beyond conceptual certainty – is inferred on the one hand from the observation of “social practice” and on the other hand from the fact that someone somewhere has somehow represented and is representing them. They present, make them visible, and in this way make them present and here-present; that is, they re-present. This volume offers the most characteristic manifestations of this representation in the field of visuality in the case of the state, law and jurisprudence in the past centuries, and what they are in our time. The selection primarily presents its subject in a section of visual culture, and does so in such a way that the range, sequence and nature of these sections are primarily determined by the characteristic features of the subject and the already given possibilities of pictorial visuality, rather than by the genre specificities of the presentation.
