A kiadvány szerzőgárdája a DE Történelmi Intézetének oktatóira épül: Takács Levente, Györkös Attila, Bárány Attila, Pósán László, Barta Róbert. A szerkesztő Schrek Katalin. 4 nagyobb fejezetben tárgyalják a szerzők a nemzetközi kapcsolatok történetét:
1. Az államközi kapcsolattartás mintái a korai és az érett középkorban (3–15. szd)
2. A nagyhatalmiság feltételei és a diplomácia megújulása 15-16. szd-ban
3. A modern diplomácia kialakulásának időszaka (17-19. szd)
4. Nemzetközi kapcsolatok a 20. szd-ban
A kelet-római és bizánci, majd reneszánsz diplomácia formáinak bemutatását követően az európai nagyhatalmiság kérdéskörei kerülnek előtérbe. A vesztfáliai békerendszer után az erőegyensúlyi szisztéma kiépülése, majd pedig a napóleoni háborúk utáni újjárendezés kerül a középpontba. Végül a 20. század által támasztott kihívások, a nemzetközi szervezetek létrejötte és a globalizálódó világ problémái kerülnek megtárgyalásra.
A kötet tartalmaz 6 saját szerkesztő angol nyelvű térképet.

The author team is comprised of lecturers from the University of Debrecen: Levente Takács, Attila Györkös, Attila Bárány, László Pósán, and Róbert Barta. The editor is Katalin Schrek. The authors discuss the history of international relations in four major chapters:
1. Patterns of interstate communication in the early and high Middle Ages (3rd–15th c.)
2. Conditions of great power status and the renewal of diplomacy in the 15th-16th c.
3. The period of the formation of modern diplomacy (17th-19th c.)
4. International relations in the 20th c.
Following the presentation of Byzantine and later Renaissance forms of diplomacy, the focus shifts to issues of European great power status. After the Peace of Westphalia, the development of the balance of power system and the reorganization after the Napoleonic wars are discussed. Finally, the challenges posed by the 20th century, the establishment of international organizations, and the problems of a globalizing world are examined.
The volume includes six English-language maps edited by the authors.
