A hazai társadalom- és neveléstudományi közegben több szempontból hiánypótló könyv az elkészült kiadvány. Egyrészt nem jelent még meg iskolai összehasonlító etnográfiai (résztvevő megfigyelésen és terepmunkán alapuló) kutatás monográfiában. A kutatás összehasonlító jellege lehetővé teszi, hogy a társadalmi egyenlőtlenségek problémáját, és a cigány gyerekek oktatási szegregációját is plasztikusan jelenítse meg, új szempontokat adva az erről szóló szakmai és közéleti diskurzushoz.
Másrészt a kötet sajátos szöveges és formai megjelenése szintén újszerű. A sajátos kiemelési rendszere, grafikonjai, ábrái, a könyvön kívülre mutató utalásai, szövegdobozai, valamint a fejezetek végén szereplő kérdések és ajánlók olyan az olvasókat megszólító formát kínálnak, amelyen keresztül az írás megvalósítja kitűzött célját, hogy egyszerre legyen tudományos monográfia, szélesebb közvéleményt megszólító munka és nevelésfilozófiai, antropológiai, oktatásszociológiai, kutatásmódszertani kurzusokhoz tankönyvként is használható kötet.

This book fills a gap in the field of social and educational sciences in Hungary in many respects. On the one hand, comparative ethnographic research on schools (based on participant observation and fieldwork) has not yet been published in the form of a monograph. The comparative nature of the study allows for a vivid and nuanced presentation of the problem of social inequalities and educational segregation of Roma children, offering new insights into the professional and public discourse on this issue.
On the other hand, the volume's specific textual and design presentation is also innovative. Its specific highlighting system, graphs, diagrams, references to external sources, text boxes, questions and recommendations at the end of the chapters offer a form of communication that appeals to the reader and through which the book achieves its aim of being simultaneously a scientific monograph, a work addressed to a broader public and a textbook for courses in philosophy of education, anthropology, sociology of education and research methodology.
