A kiadvány azt a célt tűzte maga elé, hogy Celestin Freinet pedagógiai rendszerét, működését a nemzetközi Freinet-mozgalom keretei között és ennek az élő pedagógiának a kapcsolatát napjaink új pedagógiai jelenségeivel mutassa be. Mindezt a kötet új megközelítéssel tette: a pedagógiai rendszer és a jelzett szempontok feldolgozása szótárformában, közel 600 szócikkben történt. A Freinet-szótár kiemelt figyelmet fordít a szócikkek közötti utalásokra, a pedagógiai rendszer fogalmi hálójának feltárására. Az Olvasó számára egyéni utak bejárását teszi lehetővé, miközben folyamatosan jelzi az összefüggések hálózatát, amire nemcsak felhívja az Olvasó figyelmét, hanem biztatja azok felfejtésére. A szótár elektronikus változatai az említett előnyöket, lehetőségeket még inkább felhasználóbarát módon kínálják. Az angol nyelvű e-pub a nemzetközi neveléstörténeti diskurzusba is bekapcsolja a művet.

The aim of the publication is to present Celestin Freinet's pedagogical system, his work within the framework of the international Freinet movement and the relationship of this living pedagogy to the new pedagogical phenomena of today. This has been done in a new approach: the pedagogical system and the aspects indicated have been treated in the form of a dictionary with nearly 600 dictionary articles. The Freinet dictionary pays particular attention to the references between the articles and to the exploration of the conceptual network of the pedagogical system. It allows the reader to follow individual paths, while constantly indicating a network of connections, which it not only draws the reader's attention to but also encourages him to unravel. Electronic versions of the dictionary offer these advantages and opportunities in an even more user-friendly way. The English-language e-pub also links the work to the international discourse on the history of education.
