Az agykéreg vérkeringési autoregulációját térben és időben jellemeztük nem-roncsoló, nagyfelbontású optikai mérőmódszerek (látható (VIS) és közeli infravörös szöveti spektroszkópia (NIRS), lézer-Doppler és lézer speckle áramlásmérés) és a fraktál-/káoszelmélet alkalmazásával, valamint az optikai jelek élettani modellezésével. A mágneses rezonancia leképező módszerrel az agy frontális metszetein időben ismételhető módon mikroregionális BOLD- és véráramlás térképeket rögzítettünk. Eredményeink szerint az autoreguláció makro- és mikroregionális szinten egyaránt heterogén jelenség. A kéreg alatti magvak autoregulációja hatékonyabb, mint az agykéregé. A véráramlás nyugalmi körülmények között, a vérnyomástól függetlenül is fluktuál. Az áramlási események fraktálisan korreláltak, mely csökkenő perfúzió mellett is megmarad. A zajszerű mintázat valószínű magyarázata a ''steal'' jelenség. Az érszegmensek kaotikus vazomóciója sem mikro- sem makroregionális szinten nem jut érvényre a szegmensek tér- és időbeli aszinkron működése miatt. Humán NIRS-méréseink megmutatták, hogy a spontán agykérgi vértartalomfluktuáció fraktális és véletlen komponenseket egyaránt tartalmaz; az előbbi aránya az életkorral általában, menopausa után pedig rohamosan csökken. Ez valószínűleg a parenchymális kisartériák merevedését és így az autoregulációs kapacitás beszűkülését jelzi.

Blood flow autoregulation was characterized in the brain cortex in space and time using non-destructive, high resolution optical methods (visible (VIS) and near-infrared tissue spectroscopy (NIRS), laser-Doppler flowmetry and laser speckle flow imaging), the concept of fractals and chaos along with physiological modelling of the optical signals. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to collect repetitive microregional BOLD- and blood flow maps in coronal sections. Our results indicate that autoregulation is heterogeneous both at the macro- and microregional levels. Autoregulation of the subcortical nuclei is more efficient than that of the brain cortex. Blood flow showed resting fluctuations largely independent of that in blood pressure. Perfusion events are fractally correlated which persists with falling perfusion levels. The phenomenon known as "steal" is a likely reason of the observed noiselike pattern. Known segmental chaotic pattern cannot manifest in the regional signal due to the spatially and temporally asynchronous vasomotion induced flowmotion of the vascular segments. Our NIRS measurements showed that spontaneous blood volume fluctuations contain components of fractal motion and white noise. With age, especially in post-menopause women, the frequency range of the former gets narrowed by the latter. This may be an indication of the stiffening of the small intraparenchymal arteries which results in narrowing of the autoregulatory capacity.
