Az MTA Földrajztudományi Kutatóintézet 1997-ben indult Kárpát-medencei etnikai térképsorozatának keretén belül megvalósult a Magyar Köztársaság területén az etnikai térszerkezet fél évezredes változásának és jelen állapotának bemutatása, az ehhez kapcsolódó történeti és modern etnikai földrajzi információs rendszer összeállítása, illetve a sorozat korábbi tagjainál megszokott formában magyar és angol nyelvű tanulmánnyal is illusztrált térképkomplexumok kiadása. Szintén lezajlott a Kárpát-medence határainkon túli területein a recens, 1989-2002 közötti etnikai térfolyamatok vizsgálata és könyv illetve CD-ROM formában való megjelentetése.

In the frame of the series of ethnic maps of the Carpatho-Pannonian area of the Geographical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences started 1997 the presentation of the changes and present situation of the ethnic patterns on the present territory of Hungary, the collecting of the historic and contemporary ethnic GIS, the compiling and publishing of the complex ethnic maps of Hungary was realized in Hungarian and in English. Besides of this the study of the recent ethnic processes (between 1989 and 2002), structures in the neighbouring countries was also attained in the form of a book and a CD-ROM.
