Projektünk célja egy nyelvfilozófia-történeti monográfia-sorozat első, a sorozat jellegét és színvonalát meghatározó köteteinek megírása és megjelentetése. Ezzel túllépnénk a megszokott kutatási projekteken, amelyek jellemzően nem támogatják a nagyobb lélegzetű és egységes gondolatmenetű munkák megírását; ehelyett a résztvevők többnyire tanulmányokat írnak, melyek sokszor egyébkénti kutatási témáikat egészítik ki vagy fejelik meg jól-rosszul az illető projekt problematikájával, majd ezután tanulmányköteteket állítanak össze az alkalmi kutatócsoport írásaiból, amelyeket csak laza tematikus szálak kötnek össze egymással.
Könyvsorozatunk a módszerek és témák pluralitására törekszik: nem kötelezzük el magunkat sem az „analitikus”, sem pedig a „kontinentális” (vagy „hermeneutikai”) irány vagy módszer mellett; emellett tematikus sokféleségre törekszünk: tervünkben szerepelnek monográfiák a nyelvfilozófia-történet egyes alakjairól, irányzatairól, a nyelvfilozófia egyes problémáinak a filozófiatörténetbeni megjelenéséről, továbbá nemcsak – mint ami a gyakoribb szokott lenni a nyelvfilozófia-történetírásban – az új- és a legújabbkori filozófiatörténet kap helyet, hanem régebbi korokig is visszanyúlunk. A sorozat nyitókötetét Kelemen János – aki egyike volt a hazai nyelvfilozófiai kutatások elindítóinak, s aki hazai egyetemen először tartott nyelvfilozófiai kurzust – írja.
Summary
The objective of our project is to create and publish the first volumes of a prospective series in the philosophy of language. These monographies, written by leading experts of the field, are expected to set up the standards for the coming books of the series launched. Our ambition is to exceed the usual projects, which instead of comprehensive works support collections of essays compiled from loosely connected writings of the group-members.
The ambition behind our series is to present a plurality of methods and topics to the readers: we do not commit ourselves either to the “analytic” or to the “continental” (or “hermeneutic”) method and encourage thematic plurality. Among others we intend to produce monographs on great authors, important problems, and trends in the philosophy of language. Contrary to the prevailing course we do not intend to focus exclusively on the latest and modern developments, but go back into the distant past of the history. The first piece of the series will be written by professor János Kelemen who belongs to the originators of the Hungarian studies in the philosophy of language.

Kutatásunk súlypontjai a következő kérdésekre estek:
1/ A nyelv (ill. nyelvfilozófia) mint a filozófiai analízis, ill. érvelés eszköze problémája.
Ezen belül vizsgáltuk
a/ a hagyományos metafizikai problémák nyelvi analízissel történő megoldását (Thomas Reidnél és Moore-nál),
b/ a nyelvkritikát mint a filozófiai érvelés módszerét és a metafizika-kritika eszközét (Carnapnál és Wittgensteinnél).
Kutatásunknak ez a pont volt a leghangsúlyosabb része.
2/ A nyelv-gondolkodás-relativizmus összefüggései szövegértelmezésekben (Frege, Wittgenstein), továbbá tudományfilozófiai, hermeneutikai, ill. kognitiv tudományi kontextusba helyezve.
3/ Történeti elemzések a nyelvfilozófia történetének némely csomópontjáról, nevezetesen az olasz nyelvű irodalomból (Dante- és Vico-elemzések), továbbá a 19-20. század fordulójának nyelvi fordulatáról (a saussure-i nyelvészettel a középpontban, ám tágabb eszmetörténeti kontextusban).

Our research had the following three focal points:
1/ The language (or rather the philosophy of language) as the central concern of philosophical analysis, and as the tool of argumentation.
This general question was approached from two angles:
a) How traditional metaphysical problems had been solved by linguistic analysis (as with Reid and Moore).
b) The linguistic approach as a method of philosophical reasoning and as a means of the elimination of metaphysics (Carnap, Wittgenstein).
We consider this first point as the principal part of our project.
2/ The interconnections of language, thought, and relativism elucidated by interpretations of primary sources (Frege, Wittgenstein) and investigated in the contexts of hermeneutics, philosophy of science, and cognitive science.
3/ Historical studies of some epoch-making authors from the past of the philosophy of language (Dante and Vico) and exploration of the ‘linguistic turn’ that took place at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The focus of the latter research was Saussure’s general linguistics set into a broader context of ideas.
