Pályázatunk fő célja, hogy kutató csoportunk részt vehessen a CERN LHC gyorsitó ALICE kísérletében, ahol nehézion ütközésekben kívánjuk vizsgálni a kvark-gluon plazma állapot megjelenését, annak tulajdonságait. A kísérletekben a közepes és nagy impulzusú töltött részecskék (pionok, kaonok, protonok, antiprotonok) mérésében, ezen részecskék kísérleti szétválasztásában kívánunk közreműködni. Ezen adatok ismerete nagymértékben leszűkíti a lehetséges elméleti magyarázatokat és pontos információkkal szolgál a nehézion ütközésben létrejött sűrű és forró anyagról. Tevékenységünkkel folytatni kívánjuk a korábbi magyar részvételt az ALICE kísérletben. Az első Pb+Pb ütközések 2008-ban várhatóak, amikoris √s = 5500 AGeV energia koncentrálódik majd egy kis térfogatba, óriási energisűrűséget létrehozva. Pályázatunk keretében a következő feladatokat kívánjuk elvégezni a 2006-2008 időtartam alatt:
A, Részt kívánunk venni a HMPID (High Momentum Particle Identification Detector) berendezés adatainak analízisében. Ez a detektor 3 GeV/c impulzusig szétválogatja a pionokat és a kaonokat, 5 GeV/c-ig pedig a kaonokat és a protonokat. A HMPID detektort 2006-ban állítják fel. Olyan szoftver-fejlesztésekben kívánunk bekapcsolódni, amelyek megoldják a TPC detektorral való együttműködést, s ezzel a töltött hadronok impulzusának nagy pontosságú meghatározását a p+p és Pb+Pb ütközésekben.
B, Részt veszünk a VHMPID (Very High Momentum Particle Identification Detector) projektben, ahol egy ’Threshold Imaging Cherenkov’ (TIC) detektorral kivánjuk megoldani a pionok, kaonok és protonok szétválasztását az 5-15 GeV/c transzverzális impulzus tartományban. Elvégezzük a szükséges szimulációkat és megépítünk egy teszt-berendezést, amelyet 2006 végén, 2007 elején ki kívánunk próbálni a CERN-ben. Sikeres tesztelés esetén 2007-ben már a p+p ütközésben közvetlenül is felhasználhatnánk a detektort. A cél, hogy 2008-ban az Pb+Pb ütközésekben azonosítani tudjuk a különösen nagy impulzusú töltött hadronokat.
C, A közepes és a nagy impulzusú tartományban érvényes elméleti számolásokat rendszerezzük és beépítjük a szimulációs programokba, hogy így növeljük az adatanalizisünk pontosságát. A HMPID és VHMPID adatokból meg tudjuk mondani a nagyenergiás jetek forró, sűrű anyagban elszenvedett energiaveszteségét, így meg tudjuk határozni a keletkezett plazma állapot sűrűségét és egyéb tulajdonságait.
Summary
Our main goal is to participate in the ALICE collaboration at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This proposal focuses on identification and investigation of charged hadrons (pions, kaons, protons, antiprotons) produced with intermediate and high transverse momentum in heavy ion collisions. We continue previous Hungarian efforts in ALICE on this topic. The first Pb+Pb collisions are scheduled for 2008, when √s = 5500 AGeV energy will be concentrated into a small volume, producing extreme high energy densities. The goals of our proposal will be realized in the following research activities during 2006-2008:
A, We participate in the HMPID effort. This detector contains Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) counters and it can separate pions and kaons up to 3 GeV/c, kaons and protons up to 5 GeV/c. The design of the HMPID detector has finished, it will be installed in the middle of 2006. Further activities are needed on software development to connect the TPC tracks and signals of particles from HMPID to determine precisely the
required transverse momenta.
B, We participate in the VHMPID project. This detector will be based on the Threshold Imaging Cherenkov (TIC) method to separate pion, kaon and proton in momentum range 5-15 GeV/c. We perform GEANT simulations on detector designs and build a test detector. Test beam will be available from the end of 2006 at CERN. In case of successful testing, available VHMPID moduls can be integrated and used in p+p run in 2007. Building a multi-modul detector will be possible in 2008 for the Pb+Pb run.
C, We collect the latest theoretical results on intermediate- and high-pT hadron production in p+p and heavy ion collisions and include them into the simulations to improve the precision and efficiency of data analysis. Data from HMPID and VHMID carries important information about jet energy loss in hot dense matter. Thus we can determine the density and other properties of the produced quark-gluon plasma phase.

Kutatócsoportunk részt vesz a CERN LHC ALICE együttműködésben. Az alábbi tudományos eredményeket értük el 2006-2009 között: -A, HMPID detektor: Részt vettünk a HMPID megépítésében és installálásában, on-line monitorozó software-t fejlesztettünk ki. Adatgyüjtésben vettünk részt a kozmikus és az első pp ütközési periódusban. 2009-től Molnár Levente a kísérlet Run Coordinatora. -B, VHMPID fejlesztés: Trigger modul kifejlesztése nagy impulzusú hadronokra, új technológiai megoldások vizsgálata (Gáz Elektron Sokszorozó - GEM). Az ALIROOT-ba beillesztettük a VHMPID-et. Kisméretű prototípus elkészítése és tesztelése a CERN PS-nél. -C, Tier-2 ALICE GRID állomás az RMKI-ban: A dedikált GRID nagysága: 100 CPU, 30 TB tároló 2009-ben. . -D, Elméleti eredményeink (nagy-pT fizika, HMPID, VHMPID specifikusan): PP és PbPb ütközésben tanulmányoztuk nagy impulzusú részecskék keletkezési mechanizmusait: parton fragmentáció és pQCD, közel-termikus rendszerek Tsallis-eloszlással, nem-perturbatív párkeltés időfügggő intenzív terekben. Kvark koleszcencia modellünket továbbfejlesztettük és alkalmaztunk. 2-jet és 3-jet eseményeket vizsgáltuk. Nehézion ütközésben kezdeti és végállapoti kölcsönhatást vizsgáltunk, igy a jetek energiaveszteségét. Eredményeinket 40 tudományos közleményben jelentettük meg: 24 cikk referált újságban (IF: 68), 9 cikk conferencia kötetben, 2 e-print formájában, valamint 2 poszter és 3 szerkesztett proceedings. Our research group participates in the CERN LHC ALICE collaboration. During 2006-2009 we have accomplished the following results: -A, HMPID detector: Participation in the construction and installation; developing on-line monitoring software. We run cosmic ray data collection and start pp. Molnár L. became Run Coordinator in 2009. -B, VHMPID upgrade: Development of a high-pT trigger module, study new technologies, e.g. Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM). ALIROOT is improved for VHMPID simulations. Small size prototype has been tested in pion testbeam. -C, Tier-2 ALICE GRID station at RMKI: The ALICE dedicated GRID unit consists of 100 CPU and 30 TB storage in 2009. -D, Theoretical studies related to VHMPID and high-pT physics High momentum particle production and correlation in pp and PbPb collisions were studied: parton fragmentation described by perturbative QCD, near-thermal models containing Tsallis distributions and non-perturbative pair production in time dependent intense fields. Quark coalescence model has been improved and applied. 2-jet and 3-jet events have been studied. In PbPb collisions initial state and final state effects, especially jet energy loss has been investigated. We published 40 papers: 24 papers in refereed journals (IF: 68), 9 papers in conference proceedings, 2 e-prints, 2 posters, 3 edited proceedings of High-pT Workshops.
