A Nyugat első nemzedékének három legjelentősebb alkotója közül egyedül Kosztolányi Dezsőnek nincs mindmáig kritikai kiadása. Holott a 20. századi magyar irodalmi kánon talán legradikálisabban átrendeződött fejezete a Kosztolányi-életmű, s ha nincs megbízható szövegbázis, nehéz a kánon alakulásán érdemben vitatkozni. Az életmű mai jelentőségét erősíti az is, hogy Kosztolányi azok közé az íróink közé tartozik, akik iránt külföldön is érdeklődés tapasztalható. A projekt mindenekelőtt a kritikai kiadás megtervezését és elindítását jelenti. Nemcsak az életműbe tartozó teljes szövegkorpuszt gyűjti össze (egy része még ismeretlen, felkutatásra vár), hanem a vonatkozó szakirodalmat is. A kritikai kiadás tartalmazni fogja az összes olyan szövegváltozatot, amelyek között jelentős eltérések tapasztalhatók; a szövegek és a változatok összes megjelenési adatát; a szövegek keletkezéstörténetét; az életművön belüli szövegösszefüggéseket; tárgyi magyarázó jegyzeteket; a művek fogadtatástörténetét (összefoglalásszerűen). Egyúttal – még ebben a négyéves periódusban – megkezdődik a kritikai kiadás egyes köteteinek elkészítése és kiadása is. Öt kötet készül el (a megjelentetés költségei nem az OTKA-pályázatot terhelik). Az elkészülő anyagot korszerű hálózati kiadásban is elérhetővé tesszük. A projekt székhelye az MTA Irodalomtudományi Intézete, de részt vesznek benne az ELTE és más egyetemek munkatársai is. Néhány ismert Kosztolányi-kutató mellett fiatalabb kutatók és egyetemi hallgatók is közreműködnek.
Summary
Dezső Kosztolányi is the only one who, of the three most significant authors of the first generation of the periodical Nyugat, has no critical edition of his works, Perhaps the most radically rearranged chapter of the canon of the 20th century history of Hungarian literature is the oeuvre of Kosztolányi, and if there is no reliable basis for studying his texts, it is difficult to discuss the formation of this canon. Kosztolányi is among the few Hungarian writers who enjoy international interest. The work to be done is planning and starting the critical edition; it is not only the complete corpus of texts belonging to the whole work which should be collected (part of which is still unknown, waiting to be explored), but also the relevant literature on the works of Kosztolányi. The critical edition will contain all the versions and variations of texts, between which there may be significant differences, all the data of publication of the texts and their variants, the history of the genesis of the texts, the contextual connections within the oeuvre, explanatory notes, and summaries of the history of reception of the work in question. In the same time, in this period of four years, it is our plan to start the preparation and publication of some volumes of the critical edition. Five of the volumes would be published in paper form (not on the expenses of the OTKA fund), and he material would also be published in network (online) form. Although the seat of the group working on the critical edition would be Institute for Literary Studies of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, but the colleagues in Budapest and perhaps other universities will also be taken into account as well as the generation of the younger scholars and students.

A Kosztolányi Dezső kritikai kiadás legfontosabb eredménye a 2007-től 2011-ig terjedő időszakban, hogy sikerült meghatározni az életmű-sorozat beosztását és szövegkritikai elveit, s ezek alapján előkészíteni a sorozat első köteteit. Két kötet meg is jelent: az Édes Anna (Veres András és mások munkája) 2010-ben, az Esti Kornél (Tóth-Czifra Judit és mások munkája) 2011-ben. Mindkét kötet editio maior, azaz tartalmaz kiadás- és recepciótörténetet, tárgyi magyarázatokat is.
Az Édes Anna kritikai kiadása a genetikus textológia Magyarországon úttörő módszerével teszi közzé a regény szövegét: párhuzamosan közli a fennmaradt kézirat betűhű átiratát és az 1926-os első könyvkiadás betűhű szövegét. Nemcsak a kézirat közlése forráskiadás, hanem a szerző gyorsírással írt, eddig ismeretlen színpadi forgatókönyvének közreadása is. A kötet szöveggyűjteményként tartalmazza a regényről szóló gazdag irodalmat 1926-tól 2010-ig.
Az Esti Kornél kritikai kiadása az 1933-as kötetkiadást tekinti alapszövegnek; közli az egyes fejezetek alapjául szolgáló novellák változatait és ezek keletkezési sorrendjét is. A recepciótörténet 1933-tól 2010-ig tekinti át az Esti Kornélról szóló irodalmat, s kitér arra a jelentős hatásra is, amit Kosztolányi műve az ezredforduló magyar szépprózájára gyakorolt.
További két kötet (Levelezés 1. és A szegény kisgyermek panaszai) munkálatai előrehaladottak, s elkezdődött Kosztolányi kései elbeszéléskötete, a Tengerszem kritikai kiadásának előkészítése is.

The most important outcome of the „Critical Edition of Dezső Kosztolányi’s Works” OTKA project between the years 2007 and 2011 was that the schedule of the publication series as well as the methodological principles of the text critical edition were definitely established, and on this basis the first volumes of the book series were prepared for publication. Two of the volumes were in fact published: Anna Édes in 2010-ben, Kornél Esti in 2011. Both volumes are editio maior, that is, they contain the history of editions, publications and reception as well as text explanation notes.
The critical edition of Anna Édes publishes the text of the novel via the pioneering and in Hungary hitherto unused method of genetic textology: the verbatim transcription of the subsisting manuscript is published parallel with the (again, verbatim) text of the first book publication of 1926.
The critical edition of Kornél Esti regards as its basic text the volume published in 1933; and as the short stories which make up the individual chapters have been published several times, all their versions are published as well as their possible dates of creation.
The preparations of two further volumes (Letters 1. and The Complaints of the Poor Little Boy) are very well ahead on their way, and the preparation of the publication of Tarn, a voluminous and very significant volume of short stories in the latest period of has also begun.
