A kutatás azt az aktuális problémát kívánja megvizsgálni, hogy mit jelentenek a tudósok részéről tapasztalható azon törekvések, melyek a tudomány és az áltudományok elhatárolására irányulnak. Ez a probléma három elméleti keret keresztmetszetében helyezkedik el: tudományfilozófia (demarkációs probléma: milyen kritériumok különböztetik meg a tudományt a nem tudománytól), tudománytörténet (hogyan változtak történetileg a tudomány és rokon területek közti határok) és tudományszociológia (milyen viszonyban állnak az elválasztásra irányuló kísérletek az intézményes keretekkel és határokkal). A kutatás keretében megvizsgálom, hogy a határok kialakítására és fenntartására irányuló vitákban megjelenő érvek hogyan köthetők a fenti elméleti hagyományokban megfogalmazott releváns fejtegetésekhez, illetve milyen viszony áll fenn az általános elméleti problematika és az egyes konkrét esetekben fellépő szempontok között. Ez alkalmat ad tanumányok írására (mind menzetközi, mind hazai fórumok számára), konferenciaszereplése és -szervezésre (kisebb műhelykonferencia a kutatás témájában), kötetszerkesztésre, folyóirat-blokk szerkesztésre és egy könyv megírására, melyket a pályázat elnyerése esetén vállalok.
Summary
The research intends to examine the very timely problem of the boundaries of science: how we can interpret the repeated efforts made by scientists to draw the demarcating line between science and various pseudo-sciences. The problem can be located in the intersection of three theoretical frameworks: philosophy of science (the problem of demarcation: what criteria distinguish science from non-science), history of science (how boundaries between certain sciences and related areas change in the historical scale), and sociology of science (what are the connections between attempts at boundary drawing and institutional frameworks and boundaries). My main concern will be the study of arguments for boundary drawing formulated in actual controversies, and of how they relate to relevant claims of the theoretical approaches – the interconnections between theoretical problems and questions concerning concrete cases of boundary work. The expected results will be: Writing articles (both in Hungarian and foreign papers); participating in conferences and organising one workshop; editing a volume containing essential papers on the topic; editing a coloumn in a Hungarian journal; and writing a book in Hungarian on the boundaries of science.

A kutatás legfontosabb eredménye "A tudomány határai” c. monográfia megjelenése, amely a kutatási téma egyetlen, könyv formátumú tárgyalását nyújtja magyar nyelven, és igen kedvező megítélésre talált mind szakmai, mind szélesebb olvasói körökben. A kutatás részleges eredményeit közöltem nemzetközi és hazai folyóiratcikkben, egy Honnandiában megjelent rangos kötetben, valamint ismertettem tekintélyes nemzetközi konferencián, kiegészítve a könyv megjelenése óta végzett kutatások újabb eredményeivel. Emellett sikerült egy olyan konferenciát szervezni, amely egybegyűjtötte a kutatás témájával ezidáig elszórtan, egymástól függetlenül dolgozó hazai kutatókat, és szakmai párbeszédet indított meg közöttük. A konferencia előadásainak írásos változata egy kötetben fog megjelenni, ez a munka jelenleg folyamatban van.
Results in English
The most important result of the research project is the publication of the monograph entitled "A tudomány határai" [The Boundaries of Science], which offers the only available book-form analysis of the research problem in Hungarian. Partial results were published in an international and in a Hungarian journal paper, and in a presitgious volume published in the Netherlands, and further analysis was elaborated in an international conference. An additional result of the research project was the organization of a workshop that brought together Hungarian researchers working on the research topic who previously had no contact with one another with regards to the specific issue, and the initiation of yet informal discussions among them. The workshop proceedings volume will come out in a few months.
