A jelen kutatás célja, hogy megvizsgálja és rekonstruálja a hagyományos kínai udvariassági rendszer összeomlásának, illetve a modern kínai nyelvi udvariasság létrejöttének körülményeit. A hagyományos kínai tiszteleti rendszer összeomlása, illetve az új, nyelvi stratégiákon alapuló udvariassági rendszer megszületése a késő XIX., illetve a kora XX. század során játszódott le a kínai társadalomban végbement nagymérvű változások eredményeképpen. E történeti nyelvészeti/pragmatikai jelenség sajnálatos módon nem kapott kellő tudományos figyelmet, annak ellenére, hogy precedens nélküli jelenségnek mondható: noha a modern történelmi események számos más udvariassági rendszer fejlődését befolyásolták, a hagyományos és modern kínai udvariassági normák közötti törés a kínai udvariasság egyedi sajátossága. E kérdés kutatása egyaránt jelentős a) azon történeti pragmatikai kutatások szempontjából, amelyek az udvariassági rendszerek történeti fejlődésével foglalkoznak, és b) a legújabb (ún. poszt-modern) nyelvi udvariasság kutatás szempontjából. Így a projektum elsődleges célja az, hogy eredményeivel e tudományágak kutatásaihoz járuljon hozzá. Továbbá, mivel a jelen kutatás részben kínai levelekből álló korpuszra épül, a projektum további célja, hogy a kínai levélírás nyelvi sajátosságait feltárja.
Summary
The present research aims to examine and reconstruct the collapse of the traditional Chinese honorific system and the birth of the modern Chinese linguistic politeness. The collapse of the traditional Chinese honorific system, and its replacement with a new system based on linguistic strategies, took place during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a result of large-scale changes in Chinese society. It is an unprecedented, yet regretfully understudied, historical pragmatic phenomenon: although modern historical events exerted an influence on many other linguistic politeness systems, the explicit break between traditional and modern Chinese politeness norms is a unique occurrence. The study of this issue is pivotal from the perspective of both a) historical pragmatic theories on the diachronic formation of politeness systems, and b) contemporary (or post-modern) politeness research. Therefore, the goal of this project is to contribute to these domains. Furthermore, since the present research is partly based on a historical corpus of Chinese letters, a further aim is to provide insights into the linguistic characteristics of Chinese letter writing.

A jelen kutatás rekonstruálta a hagyományos kínai tiszteleti nyelven alapuló udvariassági normák eltünését és a modern kínai udvariassági normák megszületését. E jelenség a késő 19. század végén, illetve a 20. század elején zajlott le, nagymértékű társadalmi és ideológiai változások hatására. Állitható, hogy e történeti pragmatikai folyamat példátlan: noha a modern törteneti események minden kultúrában befolyásolták a nyelvi udvariasság fejlődését, a történeti és modern kínai udvariassági normák közötti nyílt törés egy igen ritka jelenség.
A projektum nem pusztán rekonstruálta a fenti jelenséget, hanem szintén azonosította a valtozások mögötti szociopragmatikai motivácios tényezőket. A kutatás kimutatta, hogy egy pusztán ideológiai/társadalmi magyarázat elégtelen ahhoz, hogy megmagyarázzuk a kínai tiszteleti nyelv eltűnését, mivel e folyamat a kínai tiszetelti nyelv pragmatikai sajátosságaiba volt „belekódolva”.
A jelen projektum nagy mennyíségű publikáciot eredményezett, amelyek vezető szakfolyoiratokban, valamint nemzetközi kiadóknál megjelent kötetek formajában kerültek közlésre.

This research has reconstructed the collapse of the historical Chinese honorifics-based politeness norms and the birth of the modern Chinese norms of linguistic politeness. The phenomenon studied took place during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a result of large-scale socio-structural and ideological changes in Chinese society. It is an unprecedented historical pragmatic phenomenon: although modern historical events exerted an influence on the norms of linguistic politeness across cultures, the explicit break between historical and modern Chinese politeness norms is arguably rare occurrence.
This project has not only reconstructed the above phenomenon but it has also mapped the socio-pragmatic motivating factors behind these changes. As two-fold intra-cultural and inter-cultural research has illustrated, a merely ideological/social view is insufficient to explain the disappearance of Chinese honorifics – the collapse of the Chinese system of honorifics was a natural process ‘encoded’ in the pragmatic properties of Chinese honorific system.
The project has resulted in a large amount of publications in high impact journals and volumes with leading international publishers.
