A budapesti Néprajzi Múzeum mintegy 57 000 tárgyat magukban foglaló Európán kívüli gyűjteményei (Afrika, Amerika, Ázsia, Indonézia, Óceánia–Ausztrália) a leggazdagabbak közé tartoznak Kelet-Közép-Európában. 2000 és 2004 között a múzeum Nemzetközi Osztálya OTKA támogatással nemzetközi kutatóprogramot hajtott végre „A Néprajzi Múzeum Európán kívüli gyűjteményei európai kontextusban” címmel azzal a céllal, hogy feltárja ezen gyűjtemények történetét, fejlődését és összehasonlítsa azokat azonos típusú nyugat-európai gyűjteményekkel. A kutatás céljai között az is szerepelt, hogy feltárja a Néprajzi Múzeum és más, elsősorban osztrák és német múzeumi gyűjtemények közötti kapcsolatokat (közös gyűjtők, gyűjtemények, tudományos kapcsolatok). A kutatás eredményeképpen megszületett egy 10 tanulmányból álló angol nyelvű kötet kézirata, mely a Néprajzi Múzeum gyűjteményei, írott dokumentumai, más magyarországi és külföldi múzeumok, illetve levéltárak tárgyi és írásos anyaga alapján mutatja be és elemzi a szóban forgó gyűjtemények történetét, fejlődését. A 10 tanulmány közül négy átfogóan tárgyalja a múzeum egy-egy kontinentális gyűjteményét (Afrika, Amerika, Ázsia-Indonézia, Óceánia-Ausztrália). Ezek mellett hat résztanulmány foglalkozik a kontinentális gyűjtemények egy-egy fontosabb algyűjteményével. Ilyen jellegű, egy adott múzeum valamennyi Európán kívüli gyűjteményét átfogóan és mélyrehatóan tárgyaló kötet megjelentetése úttörő vállalkozás lenne az európai múzeumok tekintetében.
Summary
The non-European collections (Africa, America, Asia, Indonesia, Oceania–Australia) of the Museum of Ethnography have one of the richest material of that kind among the East-Central European museums. Today they contain some 57 000 objects. Between 2000–2004 the Department of the Non-European Collections of the Museum conducted a project called “Non-European Collections of the Museum of Ethnography in a European Context”. The aim of this project was to compair the collections and their history with that of the Western collections, and to assign the place of the Hungarian collections in the international museology. Its goal was also to reveal the direct relationships (common collectors and collections, scientific relations) between the Museum of Ethnography and other, principally Austrian and German museums. As a result of this project were written ten articles, analyzing the history of the Budapest collections based on the museum’s own archives and collections and archives of other Hungarian and European museums and libraries. Four comprehensive articles presenting the Africa, America, Asia-Indonesia, and Oceania-Australia collections of the Museum of Ethnography constitutes the essential part of the book. Beyond the articles about the main continental collections, the volume contains six further articles which present either a collection originated from a specific territory or collectors whose role was outstanding in the history of the Museum of Ethnography in Budapest.
