A kutatás az 1890 és 2007 közötti magyarországi cigánykutatások kritikai összefoglalására és ismertetésére törekszik. Az ilyen kutatások fő terepe a korszak első felében elsősorban a néprajz volt, a korszak végén pedig mindenekelőtt a szociológia és az antropológia, de mindvégig szerepet kaptak nehezebben besorolható, időnként „ciganológiainak” vagy „romológiainak” nevezett megközelítések is; érdemes kitekinteni a történelem- és zenetudomány, a kriminalisztika, illetve a közgazdaságtan kutatásaira is. A kutatási beszámoló, a cigányokról szóló, tudományos igényű diskurzus ismertetésén keresztül, a megbízhatónak ítélhető ismeretek összefoglalásával egyúttal a magyarországi cigányok társadalomtörténetének összefoglalója is kíván lenni.
Summary
The research endeavour to critical mapping and summarizing of the Hungarian Gipsy studies between 1890 and 2007. The main field of such researches has been in the first part of the period the ethnography meanwhile in the last part of it the sociology and the anthropology. There has been significant role of a discipline with more vague border namely „gipsylogy” or „romanology”. It is worthy to have a look at the researches of the history, the musicology, the criminology and the economics as well. The research report through the investigate of the scientific discourse about the Romas at the same time attempt to be a social history of the Hungarian Romas.

A kutatásról beszámoló kötet az 1890 és 2008 közötti magyarországi cigánykutatások kritikai összefoglalására és ismertetésére törekszik. Az ilyen kutatások fő terepe a korszak első felében elsősorban a néprajz volt, a korszak végén pedig mindenekelőtt a szociológia és az antropológia, de mindvégig szerepet kaptak nehezebben besorolható, időnként „ciganológiainak” vagy „romológiainak” nevezett megközelítések is; érdemes kitekinteni a történelem- és zenetudomány, a kriminalisztika, illetve a közgazdaságtan kutatásaira is. The research report volume has tried to be a critical mapping and summarizing of the Hungarian Roma studies between 1890 and 2008.
