A projekt során néhány elektro és fotomechanikai jelenség tanulmányozását tervezzük lágy kondenzált anyagokban (folyadékkristályok, folyadékkristályos elasztomerek, festékkel doppolt polimerek). Az elektromos tér és a mechanikai (orientációs) deformációk között fellépő csatolást (flexoelektromos effektus) elsősorban hajlott törzsű molekulákból felépített folyadékkristályokon és elasztomereken kívánjuk megvizsgálni. E vizsgálatok célja a flexoelektromos együtthatók és a molekula alakja közötti összefüggés jobb megértése. A fotoindukált transz-cisz izomerizáció által létrejövő mechanikai torzulások vizsgálatát tervezzük azo festékkel adalékolt elasztomerekben és polimerekben. Külön figyelmet fordítunk a fény polarizációjával összefüggő jelenségeknek. Ezen belül, az azobenzol molekulákat tartalmazó polimerekben észlelt felületi domborulatok alakjának polarizációfüggésére keresünk magyarázatot.
Summary
In the project we intend to study a number of electro and photomechanical effects in soft condensed systems, such as liquid crystals, liquid crystalline elastomers and dye-doped polymers. The coupling between an electric field and mechanical (orientational) deformations (flexoelectric effect) will be investigated in liquid crystals and elastomers, both based on bent-core molecules. The aim of the proposed studies is to have a better understanding of the relation between the flexoelectric coefficients and the molecular shape. The mechanical distortions generated by photoinduced trans-cis isomerization are planned to be examined in azo-dye doped elastomers and polymer films. A special emphasis will be given to the dependence of the observed effects on the polarization state of the light. In particular, we seek for an explanation of the polarization-dependent shape of the surface relief observed in azobenzene functionalized polymers.

Dielektromos és rugalmasságtani vizsgálatokat végeztünk hajlott törzsű molekulákból álló folyadékkristályokban. Flexoelektromos domének észlelésével meghatároztuk néhány anyag flexoelektromos együtthatóit. Foglalkoztunk a flexoelektromosság szerepével a folyadékkristályokban elektromos térrel keltett mintázatok kialakulásánál. Az elméleti várakozásokat egyen és váltófeszültség alkalmazásával kisérletileg igazoltuk. Folyadékkristály fázissal (ill. fázisokkal) rendelkező különböző bifenil és fenil-benzoát alapú reaktív monomereket szintetizáltunk. Ezek fázisdiagrammjait polarizációs mikroszkópia és differenciális pásztázó kalorimetria módszereivel meghatároztuk. Azobenzol csoportot tartalmazó, új, reaktív folyadékkristály monomerből fésűs polimereket készítettünk és megmértük ezen anyagok optikai tulajdonságait. A projekt keretében tanulmányoztuk az azo-vegyületeket oldalláncként tartalmazó polimerekben a fénnyel keltett felületi mintázatok jelenségét. Fehér fényforrást ill. monokromatikus lézersugárzást használva sztatikus és dinamikus instabilitásokat észleltünk fotoérzékeny folyadékkristály cellákban; a dinamikus esetet fényszórás segitségével is vizsgáltuk.
Results in English
We performed dielectric and elasticity studies on bent-core liquid crystals. From the observation of flexoelectric domains we deduced the flexoelectric coefficients of several materials. We studied the role of flexoelectricity in electric-field induced pattern formation in liquid crystals. The theoretical expectations were proved experimentally with the help of direct and alternating electric fields. We synthetized biphenyl and phenyl-benzoate based reactive monomers, which exhibited one or more liquid crystalline phases. The phase diagrams of these substances were determined by polarizing microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. We prepared from new, reactive liquid crystallone monomers side-chain polymers and measured the optical properties of these materials. Within the frame of the project we investigated the light-induced formation of surface strutures in azo-functionalized side-chain polymers. Applying white light source and monochromatic laser irradiation, we observed static and dynamic instabilities in photosensitive liquid crystal cells; the dynamic case was studied through light-scattering as well.
