A pályázat a főemlősök agyának egy olyan pályarendszerének anatómiai és elektrofiziológiai vizsgálatát tűzi ki célul, mely a colliculus superiort, a hátsó thalamust és a bazális ganglionokat foglalja magába. Munkacsoportunk az elmúlt 30 évben nemzetközi együttműködésben leírt egy a bazális ganglionokat magába foglaló olyan pályát, mely a macskák agyában a colliculus superiort, a thalamus hátulsó magcsoportjait és az sulcus ectosylvius anterior mentén húzódó kéregterületeket tartalmazza. Ez a pályarendszer a bazális ganglionok egyik hurokpályáját képezné, és a mozgásszerveződésért felelős multiszenzoros információ feldolgozásáért lenne felelős. Jelen pályázat célja ezen pálya koncepciónak generalizálása anatómiai és élettani módszerekkel, illetve a vizsgálatok főemlősökre való kiterjesztésével. Munkacsoportunknak most olyan új módszerek állnak rendelkezésre (elsősorban éber, viselkedő majmon végrehajtott elektrofiziológiai és magatartási mérések lehetősége), melyek lehetővé teszik annak bizonyítását, hogy ez a pálya megfelelne a Goodale és Milner által leírt “action” pálya szubkortikális részének. Embereken végzett – elsősorban a magnocelluláris látópályarendszerrel kapcsolatos – elektrofiziológiai és pszichofiziológiai vizsgálatok egészítenék ki a vizsgálatokat.
Summary
This project proposal deals with the electrophysiological and anatomical investigation of a novel pathway including the superior colliculus, the posterior thalamus and the basal ganglia in cats and monkeys. During the last 30 years, we have described in international collaboration a multisensory sensorimotor pathway in the feline brain including the superior colliculus, the cortex along the anterior ectosylvian sulcus, the posterior thalamus and the basal ganglia. We proposed that this pathway would correspond to a novel tectal loop of the basal ganglia. The neurons in this pathway showed rather uniform receptive field properties greatly differing from those in the primary sensory pathways. It is suggested that this pathway would be responsible for the multisensory guidance of object related movement and self-motion. In this project we should like to extend the concept to primates and prove the hypothesis that this pathway may correspond to the subcortical part of the “action” pathway of he human brain proposed by Goodale and Milner. The methods that allow the microelectrode recordings in behaving, awake restrained monkeys have been prepared and can be run in this project period. Further, the electrophysiological and statistical methods that allow the simultaneous recording of unit activity in different parts of the pathway are already available. Human electrophysiological and psychophysiological experiments dealing with magnocellular visual functions would complement this project.

A pathway to the basal ganglia including the posterior thalamus and superior colliculus. Electrophysiological and anatomical studies Our project was to study parallel processing of sensory information. We attempted to prove the hypothesis that the sensory information that reaches the basal ganglia basically of tectal origin. In this aspect, the most remarkable result of ours was the introduction of awake, eye movement controlled behaving cat preparate that can substitute the anaesthetized, immobilizes animals in the experiments. We regard it as great importance the new rat strain of ours that has similar hehavioural properties as schizophrenic patients display. Besides these, other forms of parallel information processing were studied, too. The range of our experiments was rather wide it extended to four species: humans, cats, rhesus monkeys and rats were either our experimental subjects. During the time of the grant we published 29 full-paper, English language publications. Seven PhD diplomas were earned by our students.

A basalis ganglionok a colliculus superior-t és a hátsó thalamus-t magában foglaló pályája. Elektrofiziologiai és anatómiai tanulmányok. Projektünk tárgya a szenzoros információ párhuzamos szerveződésének vizsgálata volt. Kísérleteinkben megpróbáltuk azt a hypothesist bizonyítani, hogy a basalis ganglionokat elérő szenzoros információ alapjában véve tectális eredetű. Ebből a szempontból legértékesebb eredményünknek az éber, szemmozgás ellenőrzött viselkedő macskapreparátum bevezetését tartjuk, amellyel helyettesíteni lehetne az eddig használt, altatott, immobilizált állatkisérleteket. Nagy jelentőségűnek tartjuk egy új patkányfajta kialakítását, amelynek magatartási tulajdonságai sok szempontban hasonlítanak a schizophren betegekéhez. Emellett a parallel információfeldolgozás más formáit is tanulmányoztuk. A kisérleteket széles körben végeztük, négy speciesre terjedtek ki kisérleteink: ember, macska, majom és patkány volt kísérleteink alanya. A pályázat tartama alatt 29 teljes szövegű, angol nyelvű közlemény jelent meg és hét PhD diplomát szereztek hallgatóink.
