Az 1990 után bekövetkezett sorsdöntő politikatörténeti fordulat megköveteli és megengedi a 20. századi zenei művelődés és zeneszerzés új szellemű áttekintését. E munka alapvetését célozza jelen pályázat, mely a század gazdag zeneéletének tükröződéseképpen sokrétű feladatot tűz maga elé. A 2000-ben megindult Dohnányi-kutatás eredményeire építve összeállítja a zeneszerző tematikus jegyzékét. Gyűjti a 20. századi magyar zenei emigrációra vonatkozó adalékokat, és tanulmányban feldolgozza azokat. Tanulmányban foglalja össze a 20. század magyar operatörténetét és az 1950 előtti budapesti hangversenyéletet, a zenekritika történetét 1950-ig. Feldolgozza a magyar zenetudomány történetét az intézményes kutatás kezdete előtt. Adatolja a populáris zene főbb műfajait. Legfontosabb feladata tanulmányok készítése a 20. századi magyar műzene nagy alkotóiról (Bartók, Kodály, Dohnányi, Kurtág, Ligeti) és a nemzeti avantgarde egymást követő hullámainak indulásáról (1930-1950 között virágzó nemzedék, 1960 után fellépő nemzedék), és metodika kidolgozása a 20. századi magyar zeneszerzés történetének integrált tárgyalására a mintatanulmányok alapján.
Summary
The fundamental political change after 1990 requires a new survey of the history of 20th century Hungarian composition and music culture, free from the aesthetic dogmas of the previous regime. The basis for such exploration will be laid in the present multiple project which mirrors the richly layered structure of its subject. The thematic catalogue of the works of Ernő Dohnányi will be finished. Data will be collected and a study written on the phenomenon of emigration in 20th century Hungarian music culture. The history of Hungarian opera in the 20th century, concert life before 1950, Hungarian music criticism in the same period will be studied. A bibliography of Hungarian musicology in the first half of the century will be prepared. Genres, production and consumption of popular music in the same period will be studied. The main objective is the preparation of case studies on important personalities and generations of Hungarian art music like Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály, Ernő Dohnányi, György Ligeti, György Kurtág, the flourishing of the „second avantgarde” of Hungarian music (1930-1950) and the emergence of the „third avantgarde” around 1960. The elaboration of the methodological approach towards an integrated historiography of Hungarian 20th century composition will be attempted
