A molekuladinamikai folyamatok kvantummechanikai leírására a fizika és kémia egyik leggyakrabban használt közelítési módszere az 1927-ben kidolgozott Born-Oppenheimer (BO), vagy adiabatikus közelítés, amely az elektronok és a jóval nehezebb atommagok mozgásának szétválasztásán alapul. Bár a BO közelítés gyakran elegendő pontosságú a molekuláris sajátságok és folyamatok kívánt szintű megértéséhez, - ezen esetekben ugyanis mindig teljesül, hogy az elektron energiák jól elkülönülnek egymástól -, a jelenségek egy lényeges csoportja azonban mégsem írható így le. Ez akkor fordul elő, amikor két vagy több elektronállapot azonos energiával rendelkezik (''kónikus kereszteződések''), vagyis elfajult elektronállapotokkal van dolgunk. Ilyenkor átmenetek jönnek létre az egyes adiabatikus elektronállapotok között. Nagyon sok olyan biológiai, kémiai, fizikai folyamat játszódik le a természetben (pld. a legtöbb fotokémiai reakció is), amikor egy molekuláris rendszerben degenerált állapotok lépnek fel, és ezáltal indokolttá válik a nem adiabatikus közelítésben történő leírás. Kónikus kereszteződések már megjelennek kis molekulák alacsonyan fekvő elektron állapotai között is, számuk azonban rohamosan növekszik az atomok, ill. a vizsgálni kívánt elektronállapotok számának növekedésével. Sok atomos rendszer esetén gyakorlatilag végtelen sok kónikus kereszteződéssel kell számolnunk, amelyek csatornaként szolgálnak a gyors sugárzásmentes átmenetek számára a megfelelő elektronállapotok között. A nagyon gyors (femto szekundumos) dinamikai folyamatok mindig a kónikus kereszteződéseken keresztül játszódnak le.
Kónikus kereszteződések kialakulhatnak lézer hullámok hatására is. Ezen fénnyel indukált kónikus kereszteződések megjelenése egy új, fizikailag érdekes lézer-anyag kölcsönhatás kialakulásához vezet. Megjelenésük jelentősen megváltoztatja a molekulák eredeti, elektromos térmentes fizikai tulajdonságait.
Más szavakkal, akár álló, akár pedig haladó lézerhullámokkal történő kölcsönhatás során lehetőség nyílik jelentős mértékű, változtatható nagyságú nemadiabatikus effektusok mesterséges bevitelére egy molekuláris rendszerbe, mintegy új irányt kialakítván a molekuláris kvantum kontroll elméletek területén.

Jelen pályázat legfőbb célja ú.n. “lézer-indukált” kónikus kereszteződéseken végbemenő nagyon gyors dinamikai folyamatok vizsgálata molekuláris rendszerekben.

Molecules are composed of fast moving light electrons and slow moving heavy nuclei. A very commonly used approximation in the theoretical description of these systems is the so called Born-Oppenheimer (BO) or adiabatic approximation introduced by Born and Oppenheimer in 1927. They separated the motion of fast electrons and slow nuclei in a quantum mechanical framework. This approximation is frequently accurate enough to allow the detailed understanding and prediction of molecular properties and processes. This approximation is valid only if the nuclear configuration is such that the electronic energies are well separated. Nuclear configurations where two electronic energies are equal (the corresponding states are degenerate) are points (CI, Conical intersections) where the approximation breaks down. In this case the so-called non-adiabatic transition goes on between the adiabatic electronic states by allowing for the motion of nuclei to move on coupled multiple adiabatic electronic states.

There is a large class of biologically, chemically and physically interesting processes (for instance most of photochemical reactions) in nature, where the system exhibits degeneracy and hence the non-adiabatic description is justified. CIs exist already between low lying electronic states of small molecules. The number of them will increase if one increases the number of atoms or the number of electronic states studied in the molecule. Therefore one has to practically take into account large number of CIs in polyatomic molecules which provide pathways for fast interstate crossing. The short-time dynamics always takes place through a CI.

Conical intersections can also be formed by laser waves. These light-induced CIs constitute a novel and physically interesting new laser-matter phenomenon. The presence of these light-induced CIs in molecular systems may completely change their original, i.e., field free, physical properties. In other words, using either standing or running laser waves it is possible to build in significant nonadiabatic effects into molecular systems using manipulable external forces allowing one to open up a new direction in the field of molecular quantum control processes.

The main aim of this proposal is to study the ultrafast dynamical properties of molecular systems in the presence of "laser-induced" conical intersections.

I. A fénnyel indukált kónikus kereszteződések megjelenése egy új, érdekes lézer-anyag kölcsönhatás kialakulásához vezet. Ezen fény-indukált kónikus kereszteződések megjelenései jelentősen megváltoztatják a molekulák eredeti, elektromos tér mentes fizikai tulajdonságait. Változtatva a lézer fény frekvenciáját és intenzitását, eltérő tulajdonságú kónikus kereszteződéseket alakíthatunk ki. Ilyen módon szabályozni tudjuk a molekuláris rendszerbe “mesterségesen bevitt” nemadiabatikus hatások erősségét. Megmutattuk a fénnyel indukált kónikus kereszteződések erős hatását molekuláris rendszerek dinamikai viselkedésére. Vizsgáltuk a molekuláris irányítottságot, spektrumot, fotodisszociációs szögeloszlást stb... Kiszámítottuk a topológiai vagy Berry fázist, amelynek értéke pontosan annyinak adódott, mint “természetes” kónikus kereszteződések esetén. Vizsgáltuk frekvencia csörpölt lézer impulzussal letrehozott kónikus kereszteződések hatását is. II. Pumpa-proba numerikus kísérletet végeztünk az ózon molekula csatolt mag-elektron dinamikájának leírására. Attoszekundumos XUV proba impulzus hatására keletkező fotoelektronok idő és energia felbontásos spektrumát számítottuk ki. Kapott eredményeinkből 15 rangos nemzetközi folyóiratban megjelent publikáció és 7 nemzetközi konferencián megtartott "invited" előadás született.

I. The formation of the light-induced conical intersections (LICIs) leads to the appearance of a new and interesting laser-matter interaction. The light-induced nonadiabaticity couples in a controllable way different electronic states of the molecule and depending on the field intensity this coupling can extremely strong in the vicinity of the LICIs. In contrast to the situation provided by natural conical intersections (CIs) of field-free molecules, the LICI is controllable in the sense that the laser frequency determines its position in nuclear coordinate space and energy and the laser intensity the strength of the couplings. It has been demonstrated that LICIs have very strong impact on the dynamical properties of molecular systems. Among others we have investigated the molecular alignment, spectra, angular distribution of dissociation photofragments etc... We have calculated the topological or Berry phase, for which we have obtained the same value as for the natural CIs. We have studied the effect of the LICIs formed by frequency chirped laser pulses as well. II. Pump-probe numerical experiment has been performed in order to study the coupled electron-nuclear dynamics in the ozone molecule. By using attosecond XUV probe pulse, time and energy resolved photoelectron spectra have been calculated. The obtained results have been presented in 15 high quality international publications and 7 invited talks at international conferences.
