József Attila prózai műveinek (1930-1937) kritikai kiadása a magyar irodalomtörténetírás és textológia régi adóssága. Az 1958-ban megjelent kritikai kiadás (Szerk. Szabolcsi Miklós, Akadémiai Kiadó) – minden érdeme mellett is – magán viselte a kor politikai viszonyainak nyomait. A szövegek hiányosan, önkényesen válogatva jelentek meg, értelmezésük ma már nem használható. Ezt a hiányt pótlandó 1995-ben a fiatal kori prózai írások (1923-1930) megjelentek, a munka folytatása azonban várat magára.
Az értekező József Attila tehetsége, gondolati eredetisége már a fiatalkori írásokban is megmutatkozik (elsősorban az Ihlet és nemzet szövegegyüttesében). A lírai életmű kiteljesedésével párhuzamos a költő filozófiai, politikatörténeti nézeteinek, eszmerendszerének alakulása, épülése. Ezek a szövegek értelmezik egyben a lírai művekben érzékelhető világképi változásokat is.
A kutatás nem előzmény nélküli. Egy korábbi OTKA-pályázat eredménye a szövegtestek összeállítása, a szövegváltozatok rendszerezése. Ugyanakkor ezek kritikai feldolgozása, jegyzetapparátussal, magyarázatokkal való ellátása elvégzendő munka. Textológiai leírásuk még nem történt meg, s nem jelentek meg nyomtatott formában. A szövegeket a magyarázatok, kisebb tanulmányok a poetológia, irodalomtörténet, az eszme-, művelődéstörténet együttes eszközrendszerével értelmezik. Másrészt kirajzolódik a modernitás történetében is meghatározó filozófiák gondolkodástörténeti alakulása József Attila értekező prózájában és a két világháború közötti magyar nemzeti kultúrában.
A kutatáson a József Attila Társaság keretében egy közösség dolgozik, amelynek tagjai a pályázatban nevesített szakemberek is.
Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.
Jelenleg nincs használható munka, amely összefüggéseiben és részleteiben bemutatná József Attila 1930-1937-ben keletkezett prózai műveit. A fellelhető tanulmányok, monográfiarészletek egy-egy műre vagy azok valamely szegmensére koncentrálnak. Szisztematikus, az egyes művekben megmutatkozó illetve végigkövethető gondolkodástörténeti alakzatokat leíró, értelmező munkára, kötetre szüksége van nemcsak a József Attila-kutatásnak, hanem a magyar modernitás társadalomtörténeti kutatásának is. A József Attila-művekben leképeződik a két háború közti politikatörténet csaknem minden irányzata, társadalmi mozgása. A költő 1930-ban még a (pszeudo) népi mozgalom elkötelezett híve, majd a marxizmus és neomarxizmus áramlataiban próbál meg adekvát válaszokat találni Magyarország társadalomtörténeti átalakulására. Végül visszatér a (nemzeti) liberalizmusnak az európai újhumanizmussal gazdagított értékrendjéhez, megtartva konzekvens baloldaliságát . Ezek egymással rivalizáló, egymás ellenében(is) működő szellemi mozgások, társadalmi mozgalmak egy életműben összegződnek.
Mi a kutatás jelentősége?
Röviden írja le, milyen új perspektívát nyitnak az alapkutatásban az elért eredmények, milyen társadalmi hasznosíthatóságnak teremtik meg a tudományos alapját. Mutassa be, hogy a megpályázott kutatási területen lévő hazai és a nemzetközi versenytársaihoz képest melyek az egyediségei és erősségei a pályázatának!
A kutatás – és a pályázat – eredménye egy szemléletében és módszertanában is figyelemre méltó kötet. Összekapcsolódnak a különböző tudományos diszciplínák (textológia, filológia, recepcióesztétika, hermeneutika, poetológia) és – szándékunk szerint – termékeny együtthatásban születnek meg a József Attila-szövegeket leíró, értelmező tanulmányok. Az értekező-gondolkodó József Attila alakjának feltárása, jelentőségének meghatározása a kutatás régóta halasztott feladata. A szövegekből összeáll a gondolkodó József Attila portréja, amelyet nem torzítanak el az egyoldalúságok, az egyes szövegek túlértékeléséből vagy azokat alakító filozófiák értékeléséből adódó torzulások. A kutatás módszertana, a szövegkritikai, poetológiai, szövegelemzési módok mai szemlélete lehetővé teszi a sokoldalú megközelítést, egyben a szövegek több szempontú befogadásához is értelmezési stratégiát nyújt. A kutatás eredményeként megjelenő kötet elsősorban a szakkutatás (irodalomtörténet, társadalomtörténet, filozófiatörténet) képviselőinek szolgál segítségül, de hasznos eligazodást jelent mindenkinek, aki József Attila iránt érdeklődik, s aki meg akarja ismerni a modernitás magyarországi történetének két háború közti időszakát. A magyar irodalomtörténet-írás ezzel régóta halasztott kötelességének tesz eleget, s egyben teljes lesz József Attila életművének kritikai kiadása. Ugyancsak fontos eredmény a kutatáshoz kapcsolódó József Attila- bibliográfiának (1923-1937) összeállítása. Ez ugyancsak régóta várat magára.
A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára. Ez az összefoglaló a döntéshozók, a média, illetve az érdeklődők tájékoztatása szempontjából különösen fontos az NKFI Hivatal számára.
József Attila életművét, helyét a modern magyar irodalomban, nemzeti kultúránkban lírai művei alapján szokás meghatározni. Az irodalomtörténészek, a József Attila-kutatás is megosztott a prózai művek, a gondolkodó József Attila jelentőségének megítélésében. Azzal együtt, hogy a poétikailag formált lírai szövegek nem választhatók el attól a filozófiai, társadalomtörténeti gondolkodásmódtól, amely ezeket a műveket is alakította, s amelynek teljesebb formája a tanulmányokban, publicisztikai írásokban ölt testet. Szükség van tehát a prózai művek textológiai, szövegkritikai, poetológiai szempontok, módszerek együtthatásában keletkező leírására, értelmezésére és könyv formában való megjelentetésére. Ez segíti az életmű alaposabb megismerését, a lírai szövegek kitejesedéséhez is hozzájárul, tágabb teret nyújtva a befogadásoz. Egyben megmutatja az értekező József Attila gondolkodástörténeti teljesítményét és szerepét a magyar nemzeti kultúrában. A kutatás eredményeként megjelenő kötet segítséget nyújt mindenkinek, aki „ismeri és szereti” József Attila költészetét, hogy a versek lírai képzeteiből feltáruló gondolat szemléleti, filozófiai forrásához is eljusson.

Hungarian literature history and textology have had a debt for a long time, and this is the critical edition of the prose works of Attila József (written in 1930-1937). The critical edition published in 1958 (edited by Miklós Szabolcsi, Akadémiai Kiadó) – although it was a valuable work – was influenced by the political circumstances of the time. The texts featured were deficient, their selection war arbitrary, and their interpretation has become totally obsolete by now. To make up for this deficiency, the prose works written by Attila József in his early years (1923-1930) were published in 1995, but the continuation of this work is yet to come.
The talent and the original thoughts of the prose-writing Attila József became evident in his early works, already (especially in the complex of the text called Ihlet és nemzet, Inspiration and nation). The birth and development of the philosophical and political history ideas and worldviews of the poet is parallel to the unfurling of his lyrical oeuvre. These texts also interpret the changes in the poet’s world view palpable in his lyrical works.
The result of the research is the publication and textology of the full text bodies (main texts, versions, fragments). Texts will be interpreted by the explanatory notes and minor studies using the complex methodology of poetology, literature history and social history. Also, the development of the philosophies determining modern history will be highlighted in the prose works of Attila József.
What is the major research question?

Presently there is no usable work to introduce all correlations and details of the prose works of Attila József written in the 1930-1937 period. The available studies or parts of monographs focus on one single work or some segments thereof. There is a need for a systematic work, a book describing and interpreting the philosophy history formations visible or detectable in the respective works – a need of not only researches on Attila József but also of the social historical research of the modern times Hungary. The works of Attila József reflect almost all trends and social movements of the political history between the two world wars. In 1930 the poet is a dedicated supporter of the (pseudo) people’s movement, later he is trying to find adequate answers to the social historical transformation of Hungary in the streams of Marxism and neo-Marxism. In the end he returns to the value system of (national) liberalism, keeping his consequent left-wing attitude. These intellectual movements and social trends that were rivals of and operated (also) against each other are summarised in his oeuvre.
What is the significance of the research?

The oeuvre of Attila József and his place in the modern Hungarian literature is usually determined by his lyrical works. Literature historians and the researches on Attila József are also divided as regards the significance of the philosopher Attila József, taking into consideration that the poetically shaped lyrical texts cannot be separated from the philosophical and social historical way of thinking that also influenced these works and whose more complete form can be read in the studies and popular essays. There is a demand then for the description, interpretation and publication of the analysis of the prose works with a textological, textual critical and poetological approach and methods in a book. This assists the better understanding of the oeuvre and also contributes to the unfurling of the lyrical works, expanding the space of their adoption. It will demonstrate, also, the achievements of Attila József as aresearch, the up-to-date attitude of the textual critical, poetological and text analysis methods allows a versatile approach and also offers an interpretation strategy for the integration of the texts from several aspects. The book published as a result of the research will assist the representatives of special studies (literature history, social history, philosophy history) but will also be a useful guide for all those interested in Attila József and wanting to get to know the interwar period of the modern times history of Hungary. This way Hungarian literature history will fulfil an obligation that it should already have done, and will also make the critical edition of the oeuvre of Attila József complete. Another important achievement will be the compilation of the Attila József bibliography (1923-1937) related to the research. This is another work that should have been made long ago.
