A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.
A tervezett kutatási program a projektvezetőnek Szabó E. Lászlóval és Rédei Miklóssal közösen írt és 2013-ban a Cambridge University Press-nél megjelent "The Principle of the Common Cause" című könyvében ismertetett kutatás szerves folytatása. A kutatás célja az empirikus tudományok, kivált a modern fizikai elméletek ismeretelméleti és metafizikai alapjainak szigorú formális keretben történő vizsgálata. A kutatás olyan központi fogalmak tisztázását célozza, mint a determinizmus, a téridőbeli lokalitás illetve a valószínűség. Mindezen fogalmak a modern fizikai elméletek kulcsfogalmai, és így szigorú elemzésük az elméletek filozófiai interpretációjának elengedhetetlen feltétele. Pályázatunkban arra vállalkozunk, hogy matematikai-fizikai háttértudásunkat a filozófiai-konceptuális elemzés szolgálatába állítva külföldi folyóiratokban publikált számos cikkel alátámasztott nemzetközileg is számottevő kutatási programot hozzunk létre.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.
A kutatás központi kérdései a következők:

1. Milyen formális definíciói lehetségesek a determinizmus fogalmának, milyen filozófiai tulajdonságok következnek az egyes definíciókból? Milyen
szerepet játszanak a különféle determinizmuskoncepciók az egyes fizikai elméleteinkben?
2. Hogyan függ össze a lokalitás és a kauzalitás fogalma a klasszikus és kvantumos lokális fizikai elméleteinkben? Mi egy lokálisan kauzális elmélet
helyes megfogalmazása?
3. Mik a bayesiánus episztemológia formális alapjai? Konkrétabban: milyen szerepet játszanak az objektív és szubjektív valószínűség koordinációját
szolgáló elvek, kivált Lewis híres "Principal Principle"-je?
4. Hogyan szállásolhatóak el a lokalitás, kauzalitás és determinizmus metafizikai fogalmai az általános relatvitáselmélet téridő-képében? Mi a
téridő pontos metafizikai és ismeretelméleti státusza az általános relativitáselméletben?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?
Röviden írja le, milyen új perspektívát nyitnak az alapkutatásban az elért eredmények, milyen társadalmi hasznosíthatóságnak teremtik meg a tudományos alapját. Mutassa be, hogy a megpályázott kutatási területen lévő hazai és a nemzetközi versenytársaihoz képest melyek az egyediségei és erősségei a pályázatának!
A modern fizika, jelesül a kvantumelmélet filozófiai alapjaival számos helyen foglalkoznak szerte a világban. A magyar iskola ezen nemzetközi kutatási hálón belül elsősorban a kvantumkorrelációk kauzális magyarázatának tanulmányozásában elért eredményei alapján számít világviszonylatban is kiemelkedőnek. A mostani kutatás azokat a tapasztalatokat kívánja kamatoztatni egy az előző kutatásokkal határos, attól mégis eltérő területen, amely tapasztalatokra az elmúlt tizenöt év során tettünk szert. A három természettudományos háttérrel rendelkező fiatal, PhD körül járó, de már jelentős önálló eredményeket felmutató kutató bevonása ebbe a nemzetközileg is elismert kutatási projektbe várhatóan a kutatás kiszélesítését és további nemzetközi elismerést eredményez.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára. Ez az összefoglaló a döntéshozók, a média, illetve az érdeklődők tájékoztatása szempontjából különösen fontos az NKFI Hivatal számára.
A modern fizika filozófiai kérdései a tudományfilozófia talán legizgalmasabb kérdései. Determinizmus uralkodik-e a természetben? Érvényes-e az okság elve a modern kvantumelméletben? Lokalizálhatók-e a fizikai történések a téridőben? Milyen értelmezései lehetségesek a valószínűségnek? Kutatási programunkban ezekre az ismeretelméleti és metafizikai kérdésekre keressük a választ egy formálisan is szigorú filozófiai gondolkodásmód keretein belül.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts

From many aspects, our research plan is a straightforward continuation and extension of the research summarized in the monograph The Principle of the Common Cause, written by the current project's Principal Investigator together with László E. Szabó and Miklós Rédei, published in 2013 with the
Cambridge University Press. This research project aims at analyzing the metaphysical and epistemological foundations of empirical sciences and, in
particular, modern physics in a rigorous formal approach. Our research focuses on clarifying such fundamental concepts as determinism, locality in
spacetime, and probability. As the mentioned concepts are key in modern physical theories, formal investigations of such concepts are indispensable
regarding the philosophical interpretation of these theories. By employing our background in formal sciences in philosophical-conceptual analysis, we
plan to undertake an internationally recognized research program supported with several peer-reviewed papers in top international journals.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.
The research project focuses on the following main issues:

1. What formal definitions of the notion of determinism can be given and what are the philosophical consequences of such definitions? What role do the various concepts of determinism play in our physical theories?

2. How do the notions of locality and causality relate to each other in classical and quantum local physical theories? What are the sound definitions of a locally causal physical theory?

3. What are the formal basics of a Bayesian epistemology. More precisely, what role does Lewis' Principal Principle play in regulating subjective and
objective probabilities?

4. How can the metaphysical notions of locality, causality and determinism be accommodated in the spaciotemporal picture of general relativity? What
is the metaphysical and epistemological status of spacetime in general relativity?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.
Philosophical foundations of modern physics and, in particular, of quantum theory attract the interest of scholars from all over the world. In this international environment the so-called Hungarian school is much recognized for its results achieved in investigating causal explanations of quantum correlations. The present research project will enormously benefit from all those experiences and methods that were developed in similar -- though different -- former research projects during the last fifteen years. All the three young researchers have a background in physics or mathematics
and have significant contributions to our former research. The opportunity for the three young researchers to take part in the present research would
result in the extension of the research program to a wider range of problems leading to further international recognition.

The philosophical understanding of the foundations of modern physics is one of the most thrilling research areas in today's philosophy of science. Does Nature follow deterministic laws? Is the principle of causality valid in quantum theory? Can physical events be localized in spacetime? What
interpretations of probability are possible? How our most fundamental philosophical concepts such as causality, determinism, probability or
locality mesh with our most fundamental scientific theories? Our research project aims at analyzing such epistemological and metaphysical questions
in rigorous and formal approach.

(a) A kvantumtérelméletekben megőrizhető a lokalitás fogalma a klasszikalitás feladása árán; a lokális kauzalitás a Bayes-hálók elméletéből ismert d-szeparáció fogalmával analóg; az Einstein-féle realitáskritérium a Közös ok elv speciális esete; a valószínűségnek megadható egy új kauzális interpretációja; a Kochen-Specker-argumentumok csak szimultán mérések esetében konkluzívak. (b) A kauzalitás makroszkopikus fogalma visszavezethető a dinamika mikroszkopikus fogalmára; ez megoldja a kauzalitás számos konceptuális problémáját. (c) A természettörvények természetének és a fizikai lehetőség fogalmának megfelelő választásával a determinizmus helyreállítható. (d) Szemantikailag definiálható modális logikák egy olyan hierarchiája, mely a bayesianus hit-újraértékelések logikáját írja le; ezek a logikák nem axiomatizálhatók végesen; ami azt mutatja, hogy a hit-újraértékelések axiomatikus megközelítése erősen limitált. (e) Definiálható a mezőszerű objektumok perzisztenciája a téridőn; megmutatható a téridőbeli események korreláció és kauzalitás fogalmának alapvető cirkularitása; fizikalista-formalista szempontból leírható az általános relativitáselmélet diffeomorfizmus-invarianciája. A projekt során 12 workshopot szerveztünk, 167 javarészt nemzetközi előadást tartottunk és 54 publikációnk jelent meg (köztük 1 könyv és 1 szerkesztett kötet), leginkább top-kategóriás nemzetközi folyóiratokban. kutatási eredmények (angolul)
(a) Locality can be preserved in quantum field theories if classicality is abandoned; local causality is an analogous concept to d-separation in the theory of Bayesian nets; Einstein's reality concept is a special case of the Common cause principle; a causal interpretation of probability can be developed; the Kochen-Specker arguments are conclusive only in case of simultaneous measurements. (b) Causality is a macroscopic concept which can be reduced to the concept of dynamics; this solves many of the philosophical problems of causality. (c) Determinism can be restored by appropriate choice of accounts of laws of nature and of physical possibility. (d) A hierarchy of modal logics can be defined that captures the logical features of Bayesian belief revision; such modal logics are not finitely axiomatizable indicating that the axiomatic approaches to belief revision might be severely limited. (e) Persistence of field-like physical objects over spacetime can be developed; fundamental circularity concerning the notions of correlation and causation of distant events in spacetime is formulated; the problem of diffeomorphism invariance in general relativity is analyzed in terms of physico-formalist account. During the project we organized 12 workshops, held 167 mainly international talks and have 54 publications (among them 1 book and 1 edited volume) mainly in top international journals.
