Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.
A 21. század járműiparának egyik legnagyobb kihívása az EU stratégiai céljaival egyetértésben az üzemanyag fogyasztás és a káros anyag kibocsátás csökkentése, amely például a járművek saját tömegének csökkentésével érhető el. A járművek új, gazdaságos és környezetkímélő generációjának kifejlesztéséhez nagy szilárdságú és kis sűrűségű anyagokra van szükség. A nagy teljesítményű üveg vagy szénszál erősítésű polimer kompozitok kivételesen magas fajlagos szilárdsággal és merevséggel rendelkeznek, gyengeségük azonban a hirtelen, rideg tönkremenetel megfelelő figyelmeztetés és maradó teherviselő képesség nélkül, amely számos felhasználási területre alkalmatlanná teszi ezeket az anyagokat. A szívós kompozitok a fémekéhez hasonló fokozatos tönkremenetelük és megemelt törési nyúlásuk révén a hagyományos kompozitokhoz képest biztonságos alternatívát jelenthetnek. További előnyük a károsodásra utaló egyértelmű figyelmeztetés a tönkremenetel előtt. A program egyik résztvevő kutatója korábban szívós viselkedést demonstrált egy irányban erősített vékony rétegű hibrid kompozitokban. A kutatási program célja, hogy a sikeres, egy irányban erősített típusokból kiindulva több irányban erősítet szívós kompozitokat dolgozzunk ki és vizsgáljunk. A kvázi-izotróp szívós kompozitok jelentősen szélesíthetik a kompozitok alkalmazási területeit ide értve a jármű- és az építőipart. Továbbá a tervezési nyúlás határok a szívós kompozitok biztonságosabb tönkremenetelének köszönhetően jelentősen eltolódhatnak ezzel csökkentve az alkatrészek tömegét. A vékony rétegű hibrid kompozitok károsodás-jelző és öngyógyító funkcióinak felderítő vizsgálatai a program sokat ígérő, érdekes részeit képezik.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.
A kutatási program célja a szívós, biztonságos tönkremenetel bevezetése, mint a nagy teljesítményű kompozit anyagok új, kulcsfontosságú tulajdonsága. A program kulcskérdése, hogy lehetséges-e kompzit anyagok esetén a magas szilárdság és merevség megőrzése mellett a törési nyúlás növelése, a tönkremenetel módjának javítása a katasztrofális tönkremenetelnek a merevség és integritás fokozatos leépülésével történő felcserélése útján, valamint egyértelmű figyelmeztetés biztosítása a tönkremenetel előtt. A program célja részletes vizsgálat sorozatok eredményeképpen a szívósság és a teljesítmény között fennálló ellentétes kapcsolat fő paramétereinek megismerése, optimum keresése. Fontos kérdés, hogy az egy irányban erősített vékony rétegű hibrid kompozitok kedvező feszültség-nyúlás válasza átültethető-e a gyakorlat szempontjából jelentősebb, több irányban erősített konfigurációk esetére. A vékony rétegű hibrid kompozitok ígéretes károsodás-érzékelő és öngyógyító funkcióinak vizsgálatai szintén a program szerves részei. Vizsgálatra érdemesek a szívós, vékony rétegű hibrid kompozitok teljesítményének növelésére alkalmas, elektrosztatikus szálképzéssel készült, a rétegek határfelületén alkalmazható nanoszálas paplanok is. Végül az egyik legnagyobb kihívást az új anyagok előnyeinek az alkatrész gyártókkal és végfelhasználókkal történő megismertetése jelenti majd. Meg kell győznünk őket, hogy az új szívós kompozitok biztonságosabbak és alkalmasabbak feladatuk ellátására, mint a hagyományos anyagok.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?
Röviden írja le, milyen új perspektívát nyitnak az alapkutatásban az elért eredmények, milyen társadalmi hasznosíthatóságnak teremtik meg a tudományos alapját. Mutassa be, hogy a megpályázott kutatási területen lévő hazai és a nemzetközi versenytársaihoz képest melyek az egyediségei és erősségei a pályázatának!
A fémekéhez hasonló kedvező tönkremenetelt mutató szívós kompozit anyagok kivételes figyelmet érdemelnek, mivel jelentősen kiszélesíthetik a nagy teljesítményű kompozitok alkalmazási területeit. A hagyományos kompozit anyagok nem terjedtek el bizonyos kritikus felhasználási területeken, pl. személyautó alkatrészek és építőipar, mert nem rendelkeznek a fémek esetén széles körben kiaknázott, azok szívós viselkedéséből adódó belső biztonsági tartalékkal. Amennyiben a nagy szilárdságú és kis sűrűségű szénszálas kompozitok biztonságosabb változata elérhetővé válna, az jelentős tömeg és üzemanyag fogyasztás csökkenést tenne lehetővé a közúti és vasúti közlekedésben/fuvarozásban. A biztonságosabb tönkremenetel megváltoztathatná a kompozitok nagyon óvatos tervezési gyakorlatát az alacsony tervezési határ nyúlások eltolásával a repülőgép iparban és sok más területen. Ez csökkentheti a túlméretezés miatti tömeg felesleget, amire a repülőgép iparban a katasztrofális tönkremenetel mindenáron történő elkerülése miatt van szükség, és véső soron csökkentheti az üzemanyag fogyasztást és a káros anyag kibocsátást. A szívós, vékony rétegű hibrid kompozitok ön-érzékelő, károsodás-jelző funkciójában is nagy lehetőség rejlik, mivel kritikus alkatrészek biztonságosabbá tehetők azáltal, hogy egyértelműen jelzik károsodásukat a tönkremenetel előtt. Az érzékelő funkció kombinálható a például ütés hatására keletkezett rétegelválások öngyógyításával szívós, vékony rétegű hibrid kompozitok esetén. Ilyen módon meghosszabbítható egyes kevésbé kritikus alkatrészek pl. járművek belső burkolatainak, karosszéria elemeinek élettartama, jelentős karbantartási és üzemeltetési költséget takarítva meg.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára. Ez az összefoglaló a döntéshozók, a média, illetve az érdeklődők tájékoztatása szempontjából különösen fontos az NKFI Hivatal számára.
A 21. század járműiparának egyik legnagyobb kihívása az EU stratégiai céljaival egyetértésben az üzemanyag fogyasztás és a káros anyag kibocsátás csökkentése, amely például a járművek saját tömegének csökkentésével érhető el. A járművek új, gazdaságos és környezetkímélő generációjának kifejlesztéséhez nagy szilárdságú és kis tömegű alkatrészekre van szükség. A szálakból és hőre nem lágyuló műgyantákból készült úgynevezett kompozit anyagok nagy szilárdságúak, de általában katasztrófaszerűen mennek tönkre, előzetes figyelmeztetés nélkül. A biztonságos tönkremenetel hiánya alkalmatlanná teszi őket olyan felhasználási területeken, ahol a terhelések kiszámíthatatlanok és a hirtelen tönkremenetel elfogadhatatlan. A kutatási programunk a kompozitok biztonságos, fokozatos tönkremenetelt és a tönkremenetel előtt figyelmeztetést biztosító új generációjának kifejlesztését tűzte ki célul. A kutatás során alkalmazni kívánt módszerünk az erősítő szálak típusainak keverése (hibridizálás), illetve a kompozitok rétegfelépítésének alapos tervezése útján a fémek biztonságos, szívós tönkremenetelének utánzása. Az egy irányban szívósságot mutató hibrid kompozitok terén elért korábbi sikereink ezen anyagok továbbfejlesztésére ösztönöznek minket, hogy lehetségessé váljon a szívós viselkedés több irányban történő kihasználása. A kifejlesztésre váró új anyagaink jelentősen szélesíthetik a kompozitok alkalmazási területeit például a járműipar és az építőipar irányába. A kompozitokra jellemző túl óvatos tervezési gyakorlatot is megváltoztathatja a szívós kompozitok biztonságosabb tönkremenetele, amely végső soron tömeg és üzemanyag felhasználás csökkenéshez vezethet.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts

One of the biggest challenges for the 21st century’s transportation sector in line with the strategic aims of the EU is to improve fuel economy and reduce carbon footprint, which may be done by reduction of the gross weight of the vehicles. The development of the next generation of economic and environmentally friendly vehicles requires high strength and low density materials. High performance carbon or glass fibre reinforced polymer matrix composites offer exceptional specific modulus and strength, but suffer from sudden and brittle failure, with no warning and insufficient residual load-bearing capacity which renders them unsuitable for a range of applications. Ductile composites provide a safe alternative to conventional ones showing a progressive failure character and improved failure strains, similar to those of metals. Another significant benefit is a clear sign of damage before final failure. A senior researcher of the programme demonstrated ductility in thin-ply unidirectional hybrid composites under tension recently. The key challenge of the programme is to develop and characterise multi-directional ductile composites based on the successful unidirectional ones. Quasi-isotropic pseudo-ductile composites could potentially offer a notable increase in the scope of composite applications including transportation and construction sectors. A significant shift in design limits leading to lower component weights could potentially take place as well due to safer failure character of pseudo-ductile composites. Exploratory studies into the interesting damage-sensing and self-healing multi-functionality of thin-ply hybrid composites are also parts of the proposed programme.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.
The proposed research programme aims at introducing ductility and safe failure as new key features of high performance composites. The key question of the programme is whether it is possible to increase the strain to final failure, improve the failure character by replacing catastrophic failure with progressive, gradual loss of stiffness and integrity, and provide a clear warning before failure while keeping the high stiffness and strength of a composite material. After a detailed assessment, the trade-off between ductility and performance, and the possible optimum is to be understood in the course of designing and characterising the new materials. More specific question of the programme is whether the favourable ductile stress-strain response of unidirectional thin-ply hybrid composites can be transferred to multi-directional configurations which are more suitable for real applications. The potential in the self-sensing and self-healing functionality of thin-ply hybrid composites is an interesting topic as well to be studied. The potential of electrospun nano-fibre mats for improving the performance of ductile thin-ply hybrid composites by toughening the ply interfaces is also worth investigating. Finally one of the most challenging points is to “market” the new materials to companies producing e.g. vehicle parts or structures and prove them that ductile composites are safer and more suitable for their applications than conventional ones.

What is the significance of the research?

Ductile composites providing similar favourable failure character to that of metals are of exceptional interest because they can extend the scope of high performance composites. Conventional composites are unsuitable for critical applications such as automotive and construction because of the lack of intrinsic safety margin by means of ductility, exploited widely in metals such as steel and aluminium. If low density and high strength carbon fibre composites become available in safer versions it will open significant weight and cost saving capacity through fuel economy in the road and railway transportation sector. Safer failure could also change the very cautious design practice for composite materials by shifting the low design strain limits in several sectors including aerospace. This could reduce the significant extra weight of aircraft structures due to oversizing which is necessary to be very safe against catastrophic failure and result in significant reduction in carbon footprint and fuel cost over the lifetime. The potential in self-sensing and damage-indicting functionality of ductile thin-ply hybrid composites can also be widely exploited to make critical components safer by providing clear signs of damage as a warning before failure. This feature can be combined with the self-healing of interfacial damage e.g. due to impact loads in ductile thin-ply hybrid composites to extend the lifetime of less critical components such as interior covers or body panels of vehicles and therefore reduce their operational cost.

One of the biggest challenges for the 21st century’s transportation sector in line with the strategic aims of the EU is to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, which may be done by reduction of the gross weight of vehicles. The development of the next generation of economic and environmentally friendly vehicles requires high strength and low weight components. So-called composite materials consisting of fibres and plastic resins offer high strength but usually fail in a catastrophic manner without sufficient warning. This unsafe failure character renders them unsuitable for several applications where loads are unpredictable and sudden failure cannot be tolerated. Our research programme aims at developing a new generation of composites featuring safe, gradual failure, with significant margin between a detectable warning and final failure. Our approach is to mix (hybridise) fibre types and design the layered architecture of our new materials to mimic the safe ductile failure of metals. Our previous success in developing hybrid composites showing ductility in one direction encourages us to develop more advanced types which can be loaded in any directions. Our new materials could potentially offer a notable increase in the scope of composite applications including transportation and construction sectors. A significant shift in the conservative design limits leading to lower component weights and therefore operational cost savings could potentially take place as well due to safer failure character of the new ductile composites.

A kutatási program során továbbfejlesztettük illetve új vizsgálati módszerek segítségével alaposabban megismertük az egyirányban erősített szívós viselkedésű hibrid kompozitokat. Kifejlesztettünk növelt merevségű egyirányban erősített, illetve többirányban erősített típusokat, amelyek gyakorlati jelentősége jelentősen meghaladja a korábbi egyirányban erősített változatokét. Igazoltuk, hogy a húzó terhelés esetén megfigyelt szívós viselkedést eredményező károsodási formák nyomó terhelés esetén is aktívak, így az új anyagok alkalmasak mindkét irányú terhelés felvételére. Kiaknáztuk az üveg/szénszál erősítésű szívós viselkedésű hibrid kompozitok szabad szemmel leolvasható károsodás jelző funkcióját (mintázat megjelenése), a technológia működését közepes méretű alkatrészeken is igazoltuk hajlító terhelés mellett. Üvegszál és szénszál erősítésű kompozitok szerkezetének épségét és deformációjuk mértékét fénytovábbításon és elektromos vezetőképességen alapuló új módszerekkel ellenőriztük. Felderítő kutatásokat végeztünk a szívós viselkedésű hibrid anyagok határfelületi tulajdonságainak javítására különböző fóliák és nanoszálas paplan alkalmazásával. A hőre lágyuló fóliák ígéretesnek bizonyultak a túlterhelés során keletkezett rétegelválások javítására is.

The unidirectional pseudo-ductile hybrid composites were developed and characterised further during the research programme. New increased stiffness unidirectional and multi-directional types were developed which have significantly higher merit in applications than the unidirectional ones. It was confirmed, that the damage mechanisms generating pseudo-ductility in tension are also active in compression, therefore the new materials are suitable for reversed loading. The visual damage indicating feature of glass/carbon hybrid composites was exploited and the technology was demonstrated on medium-size components under bending load. Further structural health and deformation monitoring technologies were developed based on light transmission and electrical conductivity of the reinforcing glass and carbon fibres respectively. Exploratory research was executed to improve the interfacial properties of the pseudo-ductile hybrid materials using different films and a nanofibre mat. The applied thermoplastic films are also promising for repairing the delamination damage accumulated during overload.
