A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.
A tervezett kutatás fő célja olyan hatékony korrózióvédő bevonatok mérnöki tervezése, melyek megnövelhetik a káros környezeti hatásoknak kitett gépalkatrészek élettartamát, illetve nem befolyásolják ezen fémek újrafelhasználhatóságát. Ezt a célt az anyagtudománnyal ötvözött alkalmazott kvantumkémiai számítások (Integrated Computational Materials Engeneering; ICME) segítségével, tudatosan tervezett molekulák tesztelésével kívánjuk megvalósítani. Az összehangolt projektben résztvevő kutatók a három résztvevő ország akadémiai és ipari intézményeiben színvonalas munkát végeznek, e projekt segítségével mind az alap-, mind az alkalmazott kutatások új lendületet kaphatnak hatékony technológia- és tudástranszfer által.
A kitűzött cél elérése érdekében fejleszteni kívánjuk a számítógépes modellezési technikákat, melyet a tervezett molekulák szintézise és tesztelése követ. A kapott eredmények alapján képet kapunk a kialakított számítógépes modellek "jóságáról", és ennek fejlesztése után újabb tervezett molekulákhoz jutunk. Az előbbi folyamatok iterálása során eljuthatunk egy ideális tulajdonságokkal bíró, ipari méretekben is megvalósítható korrózióvédelmi eljáráshoz.
A projekt során tervezendő bevonatok szükségszerűen hidrofób jellegű molekulákból épülnek fel. A megfelelően magas hidrofóbicitás elérhető perfluorozott molekularészletek felülethez közeli régiókba történő beépítésével. A résztvevő magyar kutatók feladatai között szerepel olyan fluoros amfifil molekulák szintézise, melyek képesek a fémfelülethez szorosan kötődni, illetve fluoros szilánok szintézise, melyek segítségével különbőző, ún. szol-gél bevonatok állíthatók elő.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.
1) A tervezett kutatás egyik alapkérdése az, hogy az irodalmi előzmények QSAR (Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship) megközelítésétől eltérően lehetséges-e az explicit DFT (Density Functional Theory) modell alkalmásával számított rendszereken alapuló molekulatervezés.
2) Az elméleti modell kialakítása során a kezeletlen fémfelületek és a korrózióvédó réteggel ellátott fémfelületek vizsgálata során elérhetővé vált információk felhasználása és ezek értelmezése után lehetséges-e a korrózió folyamatában résztvevő valamennyi komponens (fém/oxid/hidroxid/szerves réteg/víz) valódi szerepének megfelelő figyelembe vétele a számítógépes modell kialakítása során?
3) A modell kialakítása során fontos a lejátszódó kémiai folyamatok atomi szintű értelmezése, a kötés-szakadások és az új kötések kialakulásának pontos leképezése nagyobb anyagmennyiségek szimulációja során is szemi-empirikus molekuladinamikai számítások (pl. DFT-B) alkalmazásával.
4) Utóbbi szimulációval valószínűsíthető, hogy mely modellezett bevonatok stabilak makroszkópikus méretekben is, mivel ezek a számítások figyelembe veszik a rendszer rétegein belüli kölcsönhatásokat is.
5) Az elméleti alapokon kidolgozott bevonatok szintézise után azok vizsgálata és jellemzése után az elméleti modell finomítható, s a folyamatok iterálásával kifejleszthető-e egy ideális korrózióvédő réteg?
6) A fluoros technológia alapjainak molekuláris szinten történő feltárása és alkalmazása tiszta kémai szintézisek kifejlesztésére.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?
Röviden írja le, milyen új perspektívát nyitnak az alapkutatásban az elért eredmények, milyen társadalmi hasznosíthatóságnak teremtik meg a tudományos alapját. Mutassa be, hogy a megpályázott kutatási területen lévő hazai és a nemzetközi versenytársaihoz képest melyek az egyediségei és erősségei a pályázatának!
A tervezett kutatás jelentősége, hogy a különböző európai országok kutatói az ICME megközelítés fejlesztésével jelentősen hozzájárulhatnak későbbi alkalmazott kutatások megalapozásához. Ezen kívül a fejlesztés alatt álló módszer segítségével meghatározott tulajdonságú korrózióvédő bevonatokat terveznek, mely a résztvevő ipari partner közreműködésével ipari technológiává fejleszthető. A kidolgozott technológia szabadalmaztatható lehet.
Napjainkig a korrózióálló bevonatok fejlesztése "próba-szerencse" alapon történt. Egy elméleti modell kidolgozása lehetővé teszi a különböző fémeket védő bevonatok tervezését és tulajdonságaik jóslását, ami a bevonatok fejlesztésének idő- és anyagi ráfordítás-igényét nagyban csökkentheti.
A kidolgozott modell "jóságának" igazolása céljából a modell alapján számolt bevonatok elkészítése után a jósolt tulajdonságok vizsgálatát végezzük el. A kapott adatokat a modellbe visszaépítve a modell javítható, s a lépések iterálásával a modellek további javulása érhető el.
Ez a projekt lehetővé teszi a résztvevő szlovén, francia és magyar kutatócsoportok számára a tudományos fejlődést, illetve a különböző területek kutatói betekintést nyerhetnek a külföldi partnerek munkájába. Az együttes munka hatékony tudás-, és technológiatranszfert tesz lehetővé a résztvevő felek között. Az együttes erőfeszítéssel elért eredmények nívós nemzetközi folyóiratokban és konferenciákon kerülnek bemutatásra.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára. Ez az összefoglaló a döntéshozók, a média, illetve az érdeklődők tájékoztatása szempontjából különösen fontos az NKFI Hivatal számára.
Mindennapi életünkben és az ipari eljárásokban gyakran használunk fémtárgyakat, melyek különböző környezeti (kémiai) hatásoknak vannak kitéve. A fémek korróziója olyan összetett folyamat, melynek során, a fém felületén lejátszódó kémiai reakciók miatt a fémtárgyak minősége romlik, használhatóságuk csökken. Ezen tárgyak minősége és élettartama nagyban függ attól, hogy mennyire hatékony korrózióvédelemmel vannak ellátva. A korrózióállóság javítható különböző bevonatokkal, melyek általában megakadályozzák, hogy a fémfelület közvetlenül legyen kitéve a káros környezeti hatásoknak. Ezen védőbevonatok emellett elláthatnak más feladatokat is, például növelhetik a felület keménységét vagy karcállóságát.
Napjainkig az ilyen bevonatok kiválasztása "próba-szerencse" módszerrel történt. A tervezett kutatás fontos eleme a tudatos, különböző szintű kvantumkémiai számításokon alapuló anyagmérnöki tervezés (Integrated Computational Materials Engeneering, ICME), valamint a tervezett, bevonatozáshoz szükséges molekulák szintézisének kidolgozása és a szintézek méretnövelése ipari méretre.
A kutatásban résztvevő szlovén és francia partnerek főként a számítások elvégzésében és a bevonatok tervezésében játszanak kiemelkedő szerepet, míg a magyar kutatók fő feladata a tervezett molekulák előállítása és a szintézisek méretnövelése. A megfelelő anyagok birtokában a szlovén ipari partner teszteli ezen korrózióálló bevonatok való életben való alkalmazhatóságát.

Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.
The aim of the project is to design and engineer new coating materials with targeted properties of increased corrosion resistance, prolonged service lifetime and reduced ecological impact. To reach this objective the Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) principle will be applied. This theorem consists of several fundamental disciplines: multi-scale modeling, multi-scale chemical synthesis, corrosion experimental testing and verification will be approached to reach the principle objective. This project links highly experienced scientists with complimentary expertises from three partner countries and one technological company aiming to stimulate advances in basic and applied research and technology transfer.
To reach our goal, we will develop a new iteratively based predictive computational model for screening new corrosion inhibitors with targeted properties. In the second part of this project we develop an industrial scale synthesis of new compounds with improved multifunctional properties like hydrophobicity, which can be used as effective corrosion resistant coatings.
This high hydrophobicity can be achieved by perfluorinated molecular moieties that are building in the surface region of the coatings. The Hungarian participants tasks is the synthesis of fluorous amhiphiles, which are able to binding to the metal surfaces and evolve durable corrosion resistant coatings and synthesis of fluorous silanes, which can be applied for building up hybrid coatings with sol-gel methods.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.
1) The originality and innovation of our proposed approach stems from the ICME paradigm and the following considerations: in contrast with the existing QSAR type approaches we will start from first principles, where explicit DFT (Density Functional Theory) modeling will be used to scrutinize the interactions between the components of the system.
2) In addition, we will use realistic models of non-modified and modified (coated) surfaces that will be based on experimental data at the atomic scale. For the first time to our knowledge, a “virtual laboratory” including all elements, metal/oxide/hydroxide/organic layer/water and corrosive molecules will be considered.
3) In this context, it is essential to adequately describe the bond-breaking and bond-making, which can be achieved only with quantum-mechanical electronic-structure methods. Resulting data will enable the construction of parameters used in larger-scale simulations, such as, semi-empirical (e.g., DFT-B) based molecular-dynamics. 4) We aim to build a predictive model for screening new corrosion inhibitors with targeted properties. The parameters of the model will not consist solely of properties of isolated components of the system but will also include the interactions between them.
5) The resulting model will be experimentally verified, keeping in mind that the best candidate compounds need to be synthesized first. The modeling and experiments will be therefore integrated in an iterative approach.
6) Understanding the governing principles of fluorous technology at the molecular level and their application for development clean ("ideal") organic syntheses processes.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.
Impact of the project results is versatile and include (i) trans-connectivity of partners from three EU member states to strengthen ICME research area giving it a strong scientific impact, (ii) building a predictive model for screening new corrosion inhibitors with targeted properties, (iii) establishment of resource efficient and well-targeted materials design and processing concepts by rational design, (iv) enhance the competitiveness of the EU industry by introducing materials with additional functional abilities and thus increasing the potential for market penetration. Potential benefits comprise patent applications and development of know-how for versatile applications of corrosion protection of metal constructions.
Improved predictive power of materials properties and applications through building a predictive model for screening new corrosion inhibitors with targeted properties. The search for an effective corrosion inhibitor has often been approached empirically through “trial and error”. To be able to predict the materials properties through a screening process will increase the sustainability of production process and make the development more efficient. The resulting model will be experimentally verified, keeping in mind that the best candidate compounds need to be synthesized first. The modeling and experiments will be therefore integrated in an iterative approach, where the experimental results will be used as input for the next iteration step.
The present proposal is a vehicle allowing us to synergistically unite the research agendas of the four institutions and raise the international profile of Slovenian, French and Hungarian fluorous chemistry research in the field of design of new materials with target properties. We will do this not only by building on our past experience and proven abilities, but more importantly through an intense coordinated research effort leading to effective transfer of the knowledge. The results of the research work obtained by this transnational partnership will be published in the relevant scientific literature and presented at international scientific meetings.

Summary and aims of the research for the public

Both in our everyday life and in industrial processes we often use metal objects which are exposed to environmental (chemical) impacts. The corrosion of metals is a difficult process, in which because of the chemical reactions on the surface the quality of the above objects reducing. The quality and lifetime of these objects highly depends on the effectiveness of the surface treatments. These treatments usually forms a corrosion resistant coating on the metal surface, thus they prevent the contact between the metal surface and the corrosive environment. These coatings bearing not olny corrosion resistant properties, but also hardens the surface and make it more scratch-resistant.
The search for an effective corrosion inhibitor has often been approached empirically through “trial and error”. To reach this objective the Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) principle will be applied. This theorem consists of several fundamental disciplines: multi-scale modeling, multi-scale chemical synthesis, corrosion experimental testing and verification will be approached to reach the principle objective. The task of the slovenian and french participants are the computational calculations and the design of the corrosion resistant coatings, and the Hungarian researchers are assigned to the (fluorous) synthesis and the scale-up process of the synthesis. The slovenian industrial partner will test the designed coatings applicability in real life.

Új és hatékony eljárásokat dolgoztunk ki (perfluoroalkil)alkil azidok; nulla generaciós fluoros szekunder amine típusú dendrimerek; perfluoralkil-aril szulfidok, porfirin-karbonsav-észterek, (perfluoralkil)alkán tiolok és 3-ariltiopropionsavak előállítására és ezeket folyóiratokban közöltük. Fluoros glükamin származékok, királis α-nonafluor-tert-butiloxi-karbonsavak, fluoros heterociklikus amininek és aril perfluoralkil szulfidok, fluoros alkil aminok és szililező ágensek hatékony szintéziseit nemzetközi konferenciákon mutattuk be.

Most syntheses are based on the strategy of using perfluoroalkylated building blocks. The syntheses of (perfluoroalkyl)alkyl azides; of 0th generation fluorous secondary amine type dendrimers; of (2,6-dimethyl-4-tert-butylphenyl) perfluoroalkyl sulfides; unusual conversion of an trifluoromethyl-group to an ester group; of (perfluoroalkyl)alkane thiols from fluorous alkyl thioacetates; 3-(arylthio)propionic acids as odorless aryl mercaptan surrogates were published in journals.
