Az alap- és adalék-anyagok mennyiségének meghatározására YAB minták össze-hasonlító analízisét készítettük el lángatomabszorpciós és induktivan csatolt plazma atomemissziós spektrometriával. A YAB kristályba Mo, K, Ca, Si, Ti, Na, Mg, Fe, és Zn idegen elemeket tartalmazó mikrozárványok nőnek be, egyéb kristályhibák kialakulásához vezetve. EPR vizsgálattal meghatároztuk YAB kristályban Ce, Er, Yb és Gd adalékok spin-Hamilton paramétereit. A spektrumok szimmetriája alapján valamennyi ion Y helyre épül be. A Ce, Er, Gd, Dy és Tm ionok energia-nívó rendszerét abszorpció és fotolumineszcencia mérésekkel állapítottuk meg. Ab inito számítással a YAB két inekvivalens bór-helyzetének helyén meghatároztuk az elektromos térgradiens tenzor szimmetriáját és komponenseit, ezek kitűnően egyeznek a 11B-NMR-mérésekből kapottakkal. A CsLiB6O10 kristályokba épülő vízmolekula H-O-H hajlítási módusát, az OH szimmetrikus és aszimmetrikus nyújtási módusait, kombinációs és felharmonikus sávjait azonosítottuk. Li2B4O7:Cu egykristály EPR spektruma egy párosítatlan lyukhoz, azaz Cu2+ ionokhoz rendelhető, amelyek C1 szimmetriájú Li pozíciókat, vagy „off center” helyeket foglalnak el. Li2B4O7:Cu egykristály fotolumineszcenciája 375 nm-nél a Cu+ triplett állapot 3d94s 3d10 átmenetéhez rendelhető. A Cu+ iontól származó emisszió lecsengésének hőmérsékletfüggése arra utal, hogy a Cu+ ion Li helyet, vagy „off center” pozíciót foglal el.

Comparative analysis of YAB single crystals was performed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry for host and dopant ions. Mo, K, Ca, Si, Ti, Na, Mg, Fe, and Zn impurity ions are found in micro inclusions leading to the creation of further defects. The spin-Hamiltonian parameters of Ce, Er, Yb and Gd dopants in YAB were determined by EPR. The symmetry of the spectra of these ions indicates that all dopants substitute for Y. The energy level systems of Ce, Er, Gd, Dy and Tm were determined from optical absorption and luminescence. The symmetry and components of electric field gradient tensor for the two non-equivalent boron positions in YAB were calculated with ab initio method agreeing with those determined from 11B-NMR measurements. The H-O-H bending mode, the symmetric and asymmetric OH stretching modes, overtones and combinations of the fundamental water vibrations were identified in CsLiB6O10. The EPR spectrum of Li2B4O7:Cu single crystal is assigned to an unpaired hole, i.e. Cu2+ ions situated at or near the Li lattice site. The photoluminescence at 375 nm can be attributed to the 3d94s 3d10 transition of Cu+. The temperature variation of the decay kinetics of Cu+ emission supports the assumption that Cu+ ions situate at or near Li lattice sites.
