A pályázat során a nukleoszintézis magfizikai aspektusait tanulmányoztuk. A Napban lejátszódó rendkívül kis valószínûségû atommagreakciókat egy földalatti laboratóriumba telepített részecskegyorsító segítségével mértük meg. Mérésünk módosítja a gömbhalmazok korának becslését, és információt ad az univerzumban lejátszódó korai elemszintézisre is. Az egyes protongazdag nehéz izotópok keletkezéséért felelõs asztrofizikai p-folyamatot az ATOMKI gyorsítói mellé telepített eszközeinkkel vizsgáltuk: kísérleteinkkel fontos lépést tettünk a globális alfa-potenciál megtalálása felé. Mivel a robbanásos nukleoszintézis során mindeddig kevéssé ismert szerkezetû radioaktív magokon lejátszódó reakciók válnak fontossá, egzotikus atommagok tulajdonságaira világítottunk rá a japán RIKEN-ben végzett méréseinkkel. E mérésekhez egy CsI kristályokból álló töltöttrészecske detektorrendszert fejlesztettünk ki és teszteltünk az ATOMKI-ben. A sztatikus csillagokra jellemzõ rendkívül alacsony energián lejátszódó magreakciókat befolyásoló atomi folyamat, az elektronárnyékolás fémes közegtõl való függését vizsgáltuk környezeti változók függvényében. Preciziós felezési idõ méréseinkkel felsõ korlátot adtunk radioaktív bomlás sebességének a fémes környezettõl való függésére. Az eredményeinket összefoglaló 54 angol nyelvû publikáció (többek között 8 Phys.Rev.Lett. és 6 Phys.Lett.B cikk) nemzetközi sikerét jelzi a pályázat futamideje alatt e közleményekre kapott több, mint 200 hivatkozás.

The nuclear physics aspects of nucleosynthesis have been studied in the present work. Using an underground accelerator installed at LNGS, Italy, ultra low cross sections have been determined for nuclear reactions relevant to nonexplosive nucleosynthesis. Our results have impact on the age of globular clusters, neutrino flux from the Sun and big bang nucleosynthesis. Using the ATOMKI accelerator facility the astrophysical p-process has been studied experimentally by radiative capture and elastic scattering reactions at low energies to clarify the performance of recently developed global optical potentials. As a step towards the understanding of explosive nucleosynthesis, where exotic nuclei can play decisive role, we investigated the structure of several exotic nuclei using the radioactive beam facility of RIKEN, Japan. To reach this aim a CsI charged particle array has been developed and commissioned as a joint effort of RIKEN and ATOMKI. Electron screening -the phenomenon where the collision energy is low enough that atomic effects modify the expected nuclear reaction rate- has been studied in various metallic environments. Half-lifes of radioactive nuclei embedded in metals have been determined as a further test of the importance of metallic environments. The results have been published in high ranked scientific journals.
