A 2000-es évek elején a világ térképkiadásának több mint 80%-át a tematikus térképek jelentik.
Ezzel a térhódítással azonban a tematikus térképek szerkesztésének módszertani kérdései iránti érdeklődés messze nem tartott lépést… A számítógépes grafika és a digitális képfeldolgozás technikai lehetőségein túlmutató – új módszertani eljárások alkalmazása a nagyszámú térképi kiadvány ellenére alig észlelhető.

A tematikus térképek közlésformáinak tartalmi és formai ismertetőjegyei

A kidolgozott ábrázolás-módszertani rendszerezés az EU-s térképészeti egységesítéshez nyújt kiindulási alapot. (1)

Thematic cartography developed very fast in the past few decades. Several new questions of the methodology of making thematic maps were not answered. Although the search for new representation forms is observable and a large number of maps have been published, the application of new methodological techniques – in addition to the technical novelties of computer graphics and digital image processing – can be hardly seen. What is more, several basic questions of methodology have not yet been clarified and wait for answers. The studied basic questions: study of the sources of representation (graphical) mistakes, visualization methods of the content and form of thematic cartographic products.
A new system of the visualization methods of thematic maps: analytical, complex-analytical and synthetic forms (see summary in table). The recommended system of representation forms serves as a basis of the standardization of map making in the European Union. (1)
