A kutatások fő célkitűzése az volt, hogy különböző módszerekkel vizsgáljuk elsősorban az alföldi élőhelyekhez köthető mikorrhizákat és az azokat létrehozó gombák jellegzetességeit. A vizsgálatok fő irányát az arbuszkuláris mikorrhizák (AM), az ektomikorrhizák (EM), a sötét-szeptált-endofitonok (DSE) és a homoki szarvasgomba és rokonfajai adták. A tomentelloid gombák és a fehér szarvasgombák csoportjába tartozó taxonok által képzett EM molekuláris és anatómiai vizsgálatok igazolták az előbbiek nagyfokú, anatómiailag is szembetűnő változatosságát, és az utóbbi csoport EM anatómiája nagyfokú homogenitását. Virginiai holdruta sporofiton AM képző gombáinak (AMF) in planta diverzitási vizsgálatai számos nem specifikus filotípus jelenlétét mutattuk ki. Körülbelül hatvan sötét hifájú gombatörzset izoláltunk a fülöpházi homokterületről négy növényfaj gyökereiből. Ezen törzseket, a molekuláris taxonómiai vizsgálatok mellett, in vitro rendszerekben vizsgáltuk, tesztelendő azok endofiton jellegét. A törzsek jelentős része DSE gombának tekinthető. A bizonytalan táplálkozási stratégiájú homoki szarvasgombára tervezett specifikus PCR segítségével kimutattuk, hogy a gomba számos növényt kolonizál, továbbá a faj szkleróciumát is megtaláltuk és leírtuk. Több rokonfaj esetében igazoltuk a rossz taxonómiai besorolást, egy Észak Amerikában és Japánban élő faj számára egy új nemzetség leírását javasoltuk.

The main aim of the project was to study the mycorrhizae and mycorrhizal fungi from the Great Hungarian Plain. We focused on arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM), ectomycorrhizae (EM), dark septate endophytic (DSE) fungi and on the truffle Mattirolomyces terfezioides and its sister taxa. High anatomic and molecular diversity of tomentelloid EM was detected while the EMs formed by white truffle taxa separated in molecular taxonomic analysis were similar in anatomy. We studied the in planta diversity of the AM fungi colonizing the sporophyte of Botrychium virginianum. The fern is associated with several widespread, non-specific AMF lineages. Approximately 60 fungal strains with dark hyphae have been isolated from four plant species of a semiarid sandy grassland. Their nrDNA ITS were sequenced and their endophytic characteristics were tested in vitro. Most of the strains can be considered as DSE fungi. To identify the hosts of the M. terfezioides, a species-specific PCR was developed. Seven natural hosts of the fungus were identified. No specificity regarding taxa or life form of the plants was found. We found and described the sclerotium of the species. Wrong generic assignment of different sister taxa of M. terfezioides have been detected and a new genus has been proposed to accommodate the species Terfezia gigantea collected in North America and Japan.
