A tervezett kutatás a mondatok szemantikai/pragmatikai interpretációja, a diskurzusok szerkezete és az intonáció az emberi nyelvekre általában jellemző összefüggéseinek feltárásához kíván hozzájárulni a magyarra vonatkozó adatok új szempontok szerinti gyűjtése, azok formális leírása, és a leírásokra támaszkodó új elméleti magyarázatok kidolgozása révén. A kutatás a fenti általános problémakör két különböző aspektusát kívánja érinteni. Egyrészről, a posztverbális helyzetben elhelyezkedő hangsúlyos kvantorokat tartalmazó magyar mondatok igazságfeltételes jelentésének vizsgálata révén fel kívánjuk tárni, hogy egy adott prozódiai szerkezetű mondat interpretációs tulajdonságait (azaz a mondat igazságfeltételes jelentését, különös tekintettel az operátorok hatókörére, előfeltevéseit, és az általa bevezetett implikatúrákat) egy adott diskurzusban milyen mértékben befolyásolhatja a megelőző diskurzus, vagyis az, hogy a mondat által közölt információ mely részei számítanak ismertnek és melyek újnak az adott szövegben. Másrészről, az úgynevezett modális/pragmatikai partikulák szemantikai/pragmatikai interpretációja jellemzőit kívánjuk áttekinteni annak érdekében, hogy kiderítsük, a mondatokon belül hogyan lehet arra vonatkozó információt kódolni, hogy maga a mondat milyen diskurzuskörnyezetben forduljon elő. A kutatás egy részét nemzetközi együttműködésben kívánjuk megvalósítani, tehát közvetlenül hozzájárulnánk a magyar és külföldi kutatóhálózatok közötti együttműködés fejlesztéséhez.

The planned research intends to contribute to discovering the relations between the semantic/pragmatic interpretation of sentences, the structure of discourses, and intonation in human languages by collecting relevant new data from Hungarian, formally describing them, and proposing new theoretical explanations based on them. The work will touch upon two aspects of the problem area above. On the one hand, by examining the truth-conditional interpretations of Hungarian sentences containing stressed postverbal quantificational expressions, we wish to discover to what extent the interpretational properties of sentences (their truth-conditions, with particular reference to the scope of operators, presuppositions, and the implicatures introduced by them) are influenced by the preceding discourse, that is, by the fact which parts of the information encoded in the sentence count as new and which as given. On the other hand, we wish to investigate the semantic/pragmatic interpretation of the so called modal or pragmatic particles in Hungarian in order to find out ways of encoding information in a sentence that connects it to the preceding discourse. Part of the research would take place in the framework of an international cooperation, therefore it would directly contribute to promoting cooperation between Hungarian research networks and research networks abroad.

A kutatás a mondatok jelentése, a diskurzusok szerkezete és az intonáció általános összefüggéseinek feltárásához kívánt hozzájárulni a magyarra vonatkozó adatok új szempontok szerinti gyűjtése, azok formális leírása, és a leírásokra támaszkodó elméleti magyarázatok kidolgozása révén. A fenti általános problémakörből a kutatás három részproblémára fókuszált. Egyrészt, percepciós kísérletek eredményeire alapozva új, és a szakirodalomban eddig szereplő megfigyelésekkel részben ellentétes megállapításokat tettünk arról, hogy a mondatok igazságfeltételes jelentésére milyen hatással van a default hangsúlymintától való eltérés, amelyek a magyar kvantoros kifejezéseket tartalmazó mondatok interpretációjára vonatkozó korábbi nézetek revízióját teszik szükségessé. Másrészt, vizsgáltuk azt a kérdést, hogy egyes mondatösszetevők azonos információs szerkezeti szerepe ugyanolyan prozódiai tulajdonságokban nyilvánul-e meg. Ennek során a magyar mondat úgynevezett topik pozíciójában elhelyezkedő különböző szintaktikai kategóriájú, de a diskurzusban ugyanannyira ismertnek tekintett összetevők prozódiai tulajdonságainak explicit, eszközfonetikai méréseken alapuló leírását adtuk meg. Harmadrészt, áttekintettük, hogy milyen paraméterek segítségével írhatók le a diskurzuspartikulák jelentéstani tulajdonságai, és több partikula (hangsúlyos csak, ugye, -e, vajon, hát) esetében elsőként adtunk a magyarra formális szemantikai/pragmatikai alapokon nyugvó jelentésleírásokat.

The aim of the project was to contribute to the study of the interrelations between the meaning of sentences, discourse structure, and intonation, by collecting Hungarian data according to new principles, formally describing them, and developing new theoretical explanations based on these.
The research concentrated on three subproblems within this general area. First, on the basis of the results of perception experiments, we made new observations partly contradicting those in the literature on how non-default stress patterns influence the truth-conditional meaning of sentences, which require the revision of previous views on the interpretation of Hungarian sentences with quantifiers. Second, we investigated the question of whether similar information structural roles of constituents are manifested in similar prosodic properties. In the course of this, we provided an explicit description of the prosodic properties of constituents situated in the so-called topic position of the Hungarian sentence that belong to different syntactic categories but represent similar degrees of givenness. Third, we investigated what parameters can be used for the description of the meaning of discourse particles, and provided formal semantic/pragmatic descriptions of some Hungarian particles (csak, ugye, -e, vajon, hát) for the first time.
