Kutatásunk a tudomány négy tényezőjére fókuszál, megvizsgáljuk kapcsolataikat konkrét történelmi kontextusban és viszonyukat ahhoz a kérdéshez, hogy mi számít elfogadott tudományos tudásnak.
A) A tudomány társadalmi dimenziója, a társadalom szerepe a tudás termelésben, valamint a tudományos és technológiai fejlődés, találmányok és kutatás szociális aspektusai.
B) A normák és etikai értékek szerepe, beleértve a tudományos kutatást működtető társadalom normáit, és a tudomány területén dolgozó kutatók etikai problémait.
C) Tudományos viták érveléstechnikai és logikai szerkezete. Kortárs érveléstechnikai elméletek alkalmazásával vizsgálnánk ezeket, megmutatva, hogy a tudományos és nyilvános viták vizsgálatában ez gyümölcsöző megközelítés.
D) Tudástermelés vizsgálata „a munkapadtól a médiáig”, a kísérletezés szerepének és a tudás-generálás lépéseinek alapos vizsgálatával.
Tudatában annak, hogy ezen területek széles skálát fednek le, nem szándékozunk egy mindent lefedő általános modellt gyártani ezekre a tényezőkre, hanem konvergens esettanulmányokat készítünk konkrét történelmi és elméleti problémákról ezen összetett keretrendszer keretében. A kutatás újdonsága interdiszciplináris jellegében rejlik, ezen összetett módszertan alkalmazásában a tudományos tudás termelésének, befogadásának és továbbadásának, valamint a gyakorló tudós és a társadalom interakcióinak vizsgálatában.

Our research focuses on four factors of science, examines their connections in specific historical contexts and investigates their relation to what constitutes accepted scientific knowledge.
A) Social dimensions of science, the role of society in knowledge production, and the social aspects of scientific and technological progress, innovations, and research.
B) Role of the norms and ethical values, including the norms of the society driving scientific research, and the ethical issues and public concerns of the researchers working in the field of science.
C) Argumentative and logical structures of scientific debates, by employing contemporary theories of argumentation, and arguing for the fruitfulness of such an approach in the study of scientific and public controversies.
D) Investigating knowledge-production “from the workbench to the media” by the close study of the role of experimentation and the steps in knowledge-generation.
Being aware of the wide spectrum of these interests, we do not intend to construct one general model covering every aspect of these factors, but would rather offer converging case studies of specific historical and theoretical problems at particular crossroads of this complex framework. The novelty of this research consists in its interdisciplinary nature and its complex methodology applied to the study of the production, reception, and transmission of scientific knowledge, and the interaction of practicing scientists with society at large.

Kutatásunk a tervezettnek megfelelően a tudástermelés és ezen belül a tudományos tudás termelésének három tényezőjére fókuszált. Elemeztük kapcsolataikat és vizsgáltuk a viszonyukat a széles értelemben vett tudástermelési folyamathoz, amelybe beleértjük az új elképzelések felmerülését, elfogadásukhoz vezető vitákat, a kommunikációs folyamatokat, amelyekben tovább adják őket, és amelyekben egy részük a közgondolkodás részévé válik. Tudásnak pedig azt tekintettük, amit tudásnak tekintenek egy adott történelmi korszakban. Vizsgáltuk (1) a különböző társas hatások szerepét, (2) a morális normák és értékek szerepét, beleértve a tudományos kutatást működtető társadalom normáit, és a tudomány területén dolgozó kutatók etikai problémait is. Tovább vizsgáltuk (3) a komplex tudástermelési folyamat különböző pontjain felmerülő vitákat érveléstechnikai és retorikai szempontból, és azok hatását a folyamat egyes lépéseire.

The project focused on three factors of knowledge production. Here production process should be understood in a broad sense including the whole sequence from the idea to its public acceptance, that is, how an idea emerges, gets accepted in discussions, being transmitted in communication and becomes part of common wisdom. Knowledge (scientific knowledge included) was taken to be whatever is accepted by a community as knowledge in a given historical period. We analyzed (1) the impact of various social factors on the process of knowledge production. (2) the roles of moral norms and values, including the norms of the society in which scien-tific research is embedded. (3) the controversies emerging on different points of this complex process, from argumenta-tion theoretical and rhetorical viewpoints. The effects of different types of argumentative and rhetorical steps on various stages of the process were also investigated.
