Gombos Albin monumentális, több ezer oldalra és tételre terjedő munkája egy olyan forrásgyűjtemény, mely a teljesség igényével foglalja repertóriumba az Árpád-kori Magyarország történetére vonatkozó hazai és külföldi elbeszélő forrásokat. Értékét különösen a benne található külföldi kútfők növelik meg. Időhatárai a honfoglalást megelőző időktől (862) egészen az Árpád-ház kihalásáig (1301) terjednek, térben a Kárpát-medence egészére, tematikailag a keleti (arab és görög-bizánci), magyarországi (görög és latin) és nyugati (latin, középfelnémet, ófrancia, provencal) kútfőkre terjed ki. A források nagyobb részét nemcsak rövid tartalmi ismertetőben bocsátja rendelkezésre, hanem a magyar történeti vonatkozású szövegrész bő kivonatát is tartalmazza, részben szükségtelenné téve az amúgy elérhetetlen régi forráskiadványok egyenkénti kézbevételét. Az egyes tételekhez az összeállító forráskritikai értékelést is adott, megnevezte a forrás szerzőjét, a létrejöttének korát, történeti forrásértékét és a rendelkezésre álló kiadásait is. A gyűjtemény jelentős kézikönyv, mely iránt nemcsak a magyar tudományosság és felsőoktatás bír érdeklődéssel, de a magyar történet kutatásában érdekelt környező országokon túl (apparátusának latin nyelve miatt) a görög és a nyugati történetírás is hasznos, a nyugat-európai könyvpiacon is egyedülálló és ritkaságszámba menő kézikönyvet kap kézhez. Az újonnan készült függelékek a kronológiai eligazodást és a szakirodalmi tájékozódást, valamint a források fordításának repertóriumba foglalásával a könnyebb forráskezelést és magyarázatot is megkönnyíti.

Narrative Sources of Hungarian History of the Árpádian Age

Albin Gombos’ enormous work of more than 1000 pages and headings contains a repertorium of Hungarian and foreign sources concerning the history of Hungary in the Árpádian age. Its scientific value is enhanced by the foreign sources it published. The sources cover the time from the age before the settlement of Hungarians (862) to the extinction of the House of Árpád (1301), come from the area of the Carpathian Basin, of the Orient (Byzanthian Empire, Arab sources), and of the Western kingdoms (in Latin, Middle High German, Old French and Provençal language). The major segment of the sources is represented not only in a brief extract, but the sources concerning the Hungarian history are epitomized in a detailed way, which makes it unnecessary to read the older, and mostly not available publications of these sources. The editor gives a detailed description of the sources: names the author, defines the age in which they were written, their critical value, and their other publications. The repertorium is an important reference book, in which not only the Hungarian scholars and higher education can be interested, but because of the Latin language of its apparatus the historical attention of the scholars in the neighbouring countries can turn to its publication, and this unique and rare reference book could be useful for the Greek and the Western historiography as well. The newly edited appendices make the orientation in the chronology and the secondary literature easy for the reader, and the translations of the sources help their interpretation.

A vállalt feladatot a Nap Kiadó maradéktalanul teljesítette. A kiadó elvégeztette a könyv kiadásával kapcsolatos technikai munkálatokat, amelyek a következők: a ma már meglévő anyagok beszkennelése, levilágítása, nyomólemezek, klisékészítés és egyéb a nyomdai kivitelezéssel kapcsolatos tevékenységek.
A kiadó a projektnek megfelelően az anyag szellemi szerkesztését is elvégezte, beépítette az anyagba az elmúlt évtizedek alatt készült segédletet (Érszegi Géza által elkészített index), utószót és bibliográfiát készíttetett, amely a legfontosabb újabb megjelent külföldi forráskiadványokban való tájékozódást segíti elő (Bácsatyai Dániel a szerzője). Ezeknek a szellemi tevékenységeknek a költségeit az elszámolásban természetesen nem szerepeltetjük, mivel erre a támogatás nem vonatkozik.
A Nap Kiadó a köteles példányokat a szerződés értelmében leszállította.
Az eredeti kiadással szemben a három kötet kifejezetten impozáns kivitelben, tartalmához méltó és tartósságát és használhatóságát biztosító formában (bőrkötésben, aranyozott fedéllel, cérnafűzve), jó minőségű belívnyomással került kivitelezésre.
A kiadó a könyvet a pályázott példányszámban jelentette meg, biztosítva azt, hogy szakemberek, egyetemisták és érdeklődők hosszú évekig hozzáférjenek ehhez a tudományos munkához nélkülözhetetlen kiadványhoz. A 2005-ben megjelentetett első kötet egyébként megfelelő példányszámban a kiadó raktárában rendelkezésre áll.

Nap Kiadó publisher has accomplished the task in its entirety. The publisher has got the technical works related to publishing of the book done, namely: scanning and plate imaging the material available today, plating, and other technical activities related to printing services.
The publisher has also concluded intellectual editing in accordance with the project, they incorporated the aid made in the last decade (index, made by Géza Érszegi), wrote postscript and bibliography facilitating quick orientation in the most important, newly published foreign source publications (author: Dániel Bácsatyai). Naturally, the costs of those intellectual activities do not appear in the cost accounting, since it is not provided for by the subsidy.
Nap Kiadó publisher had the legal deposit transported in conformity with the contract.
As opposed to the original issue, the three volumes were designed and made in expressly imposing workmanship, as is worthy to the content, and in order to warrant durability and usability (leather-bound, gilded cover).
The publisher has published as many copies of the book, as it was written in the tender, ensuring that for many years specialists, university students, and others interested in the subject could obtain this publication that is inevitable for scientific research. The first volume, published in 2005, is at the disposal of the publisher in sufficient copies at it storage.
