A tervezett kutatás egy napjainkban igen fontos területre, a melanoma detektálásának hatékonyabbá tételére összpontosít. A kutatócsoport létrejöttét az a cél is motiválta, hogy egy társadalmilag igen fontos problémához elméleti mélységű támogatást biztosítsunk. Korábbi tapasztalataink alapján a klinikai és műszaki tudományok területén gyakran hiányzik ez a háttér, melynek megléte várhatóan teljesebb eredményekhez vezetne. Jelen javaslatunkban a klinikai igény kiszolgálására alkalmas elméleti modellek felállításához szükséges kvantitatív adatok kinyeréséhez a digitális dermatológiai képek feldolgozásával kívánunk eljutni. A melanoma detektálásához jelenleg elterjedten használt protokollba számos további klinikai megfigyelés beépíthető a korszerű irodalmi ajánlások alapján. Ide tartozik például az anyajegyek mintázat alapú vizsgálata, az alkotók szabályos térbeli elhelyezkedésének mérése, valamint az időbeli változás több szempont szerint történő követése. A kutatás célja olyan modellek felállítása és tesztelése, amelyek alkalmasak lehetnek a jelenlegi melanoma szűrés protokolljának bővítésére automatikus rendszerekben is. Az ilyen jellegű szűrésekre óriási társadalmi igény mutatkozik, ami előrevetíti a kutatási eredmények piacosíthatóságát is. A szükséges klinikai, matematikai és informatikai hátteret a projektbe bevont tapasztalt kutatók biztosítják.
Summary
The proposed research aims to make the detection of melanoma more efficient which field has a large impact in the society. The foundation of the research group was also motivated by the idea to involve experienced sciences orientated in more theoretical studies into a field which has direct impact for wide public. Our former experiences suggest that clinical and technological research are often missing theoretical support, however its presence could make the results more comprehensive and better founded. In our current proposal, to serve clinical needs we plan to apply image processing approaches to extract quantitative data from dermatologic images based on which theoretical models can be composed. In this way, several state-of-the-art clinical observations may be integrated in the current clinical protocol to improve the detection of melanoma. Such additions include the analysis of moles based on their texture, the measurement of the spatial regularity of the tissue components, and the temporal tracking of the mole changes at different levels. The aim of the research is to set up and test such models that may broaden the range of the current clinical protocol for melanoma detection in automatic screening systems, as well. There is a very strong need from the whole society for efficient melanoma detection and screening which predicts the exploitability of this research in economics. The necessary clinical, mathematical and technological background is provided by the senior researchers involved in the project.

Alapkutatási eredményeink közül kiemelhetők a rosszindulatú melanóma jelenlétét a pigmentáció textúrázottsága alapján meghatározó vizsgálataink. Különböző képfeldolgozó technikák segítségével kiemeltük és analizáltuk a pigmentáció hálóstruktúráját. Az eredményekből automatikus osztályozóval támogatható a diagnózis. Fúziós technikák segítségével a pigmentáció szegmentációjában is használható algoritmust fejlesztettünk. Több gyorsító eljárást javasoltunk egyedi eljárások és kombinált rendszerek paramétereinek optimális beállításához sztochasztikus keresőkben. Hatékony, a melanóma vizsgálatához is használható technikát adtunk meg genetikai adatok vizualizációjához. A fenti eljárások hátterében általunk kidolgozott matematikai modellek állnak. Nagy hangsúlyt fektettünk a gyakorlati alkalmazhatóságra, eredményeink konkrét alkalmazására. Létrehoztunk egy képi adatbázist, mely lehetővé teszi a fejlesztők és az orvos szakértők számára az adatok központi tárolását, könnyű elérését és megfelelő szűrését. Adatbázisunkat és a hozzá tartozó klinikai annotációkat nyilvánossá tettük. Szintén elérhetővé tettünk egy klinikai felhasználású alkalmazást, amely tetszőleges böngészőből – akár mobil eszközökről is – elérhető. Az alkalmazás segíti a bőrgyógyász szakemberek napi rutinját: támogatja a képi adatbázis elérését, a megfelelő annotálhatóságot és képfeldolgozó eszközöket biztosít a dermatológiai képek minőségének javításához. Eredményeinket nemzetközi szakmai fórumokon publikáltuk.
Results in English
From our fundamental research, we underline our results detecting the presence of melanoma based on the texture of pigmentation. Based upon several image processing techniques, we found and analyzed the lattice structure of the pigmentation. From these results, the diagnosis can be supported by an automatic classifier. Using fusion techniques, we developed an algorithm applicable also in the segmentation of the pigmentation. We proposed several speeding-up procedures making the parameter settings of individual procedures and combined systems optimal in stochastic search processes. We developed an efficient technique for the visualization of genetic data, which can be applied in melanoma research, as well. For the support of the above investigations we developed several mathematical models. We put strong focus also on practical applications. We constructed an image database, which makes it possible to the developers and dermatologists to store data at server side, and to access and filter them easily. Our database and its clinical annotation were made publicly available. Moreover, we released a clinical application, which can be accessed from any – also mobile – web browsers. The application helps the daily routine of dermatologists: it supports the access of the image database with the appropriate annotations, and provides image processing tools for the improvement of the quality of the dermatologic images. Our results have been published at international forums.
