Summary
When machine parts are in contact during the operation of any machine, their dynamic behavior is essentially influenced by the characteristics of the contact forces that are distributed along the contact surfaces. There exist advanced methodologies to model and describe these forces when the contact is static. In these cases, iterative methods of finite element analysis are equally helpful as the experimental methods providing information about the strain state of the contact region.

In case of dynamic contact, the elasto-plastic deformation combined with the variation of material properties due to heat generation and possible material fragmentation in the vicinity of the contact region make rigorous modeling extremely expensive. The complexity of mechanical modeling and its numerical evaluation makes this methodology inaccessible for implementation in nonlinear dynamical calculations that might be highly intricate by themselves. As a consequence, these contact forces are characterized by thorough experimental studies; the results are organized in design manuals and subroutines of engineering software. Still, these experiments are usually stationary ones, and their implementations in dynamical calculations involving high-speed machine parts are far from satisfactory.

This project proposal aims to carry out basic research in the characterization of contact forces from dynamic experiments evaluated during the operation of the machine. The possible engineering applications include the identification of cutting forces for manufacturing, creep forces for vehicle dynamics, human-machine contact forces for robotic force control or simple dry friction force for brake pads.

Ezek a bonyolultabb modellekből haladó hullám jellegű megoldásokkal származtathatók. A módszer előnye, hogy az ezekre kifejlesztett megfelelő numerikus megoldási eljárás (a szemi-diszkretizáció) számítási igénye jelentősen kisebb. Másik előnye, hogy a klasszikus stabilitási és bifurkációs vizsgálatok végtelen dimenziós kiterjesztésével sokszor analitikus eredmények is elérhetők. Ezeket sikerrel alkalmazzák azután a nagy bonyolultságú véges elemes számítások tesztelésére is. A modellezési és számítási technika feltétlenül kísérleti igazolást igényelt, mivel eredményei sokszor a mérnöki intuícióval ellentétesek. Számos egyszerűsített laboratóriumi és az ERC projekt támogatásával néhány ipari szintű kísérlettel igazoltuk eredményeinket. A sikeres mérnöki alkalmazások között említjük a fémek forgácsolása során fellépő forgácsoló erőket, a járműdinamikában az egyszerű csúszási/tapadási súrlódó erőktől a kúszóerőkig, illetve a robotok erőszabályozását ahol gép-munkadarab, illetve gép-ember között jelentkeznek érintkezési erők.

Dynamic contact problems have been solved. The main idea of our approach of mechanical modelling and related mathematical techniques is that instead of the system of partial differential equations which govern the complex mechanical and thermodynamic processes in the contact region of machine parts, simplified delay-differential equation models are introduced. These are obtained from the complex models by means of travelling wave-like solutions. The advantage of the developed approach is that it is computationally less demanding than the solution of the classical models, especially if the developed semi-discretization method is used. Also, the infinite dimensional generalization of linear stability analysis and bifurcation theory makes it possible to produce closed form analytical results in some cases. These can then successfully be used to test the complex finite element calculations. On the other hand, our modelling and numerical techniques require experimental confirmation because the theoretical results are often counter-intuitive in engineering. Several laboratory experiments and – by means of the ERC project – some industrial measurements supported our results. Among the successful engineering applications we mention the cutting force in metal cutting processes, the contact forces from sticking/sliding friction forces to creep forces in vehicle dynamics, and contacts in force control of robotics in case of machine-workpiece and machine-human interactions.
