Jelen kötet előzménye a kezdetektől 1800-ig közölte a Magyarország területén használt nyomdai és kiadói jelvényeket. Természetes volt az a célkitűzés, hogy a következő lépésben a 19. század jelvényanyagát dolgozzuk fel, ám az e célból végzett folyamatos kutatás igen sok ismeretlen adatot tárt fel a korábbi századokra vonatkozóan is. Ezért a katalógus első részében az eddig ismeretlen 17–18. századi kiadói és nyomdászjegyeket mutatjuk be és csak ezek után következik a 19. századi törzsanyag. Számos, korábban már közölt jelvény esetében sikerült a használat intervallumát kibővíteni. Ezeket nem közöljük újra képpel, csupán a korrigált adatok felsorolását adjuk. Az intervallumok kitágításán kívül több, korábbról már ismert fametszet új felhasználóit is tudjuk immár adatolni. Az általunk korábban lefektetett közlési szabályok szerint ezeket az új felhasználó neve alá besorolt önálló szócikkben adjuk közre. Megemlítjük azokat a jelvényeket is, amelyeket külföldön használtak olyan nyomdászok vagy könyvkereskedők, akiknek pályája részben Magyarországhoz kötődik. Szintúgy fontos megemlíteni a Magyarországon használt 18. századi jelvények 19. századi külföldi utóéletét. A korszakhatár önkényessége megakadályozza, hogy olyan jelenségek (pl. a szecessziós ízlés) kibontakozását nyomon követhessük, amelyek itt még csak első jeleiket mutatják. Arra azonban talán elegendő ez a mintegy háromszáz kiadói és nyomdászjegy, hogy eloszlassa a 19. századi tipográfiai kultúráról kialakult elítélő véleményt, illetve betekintést adjon a kor könyves szakembereinek jelvényhasználati szokásaiba és képi világába.
Summary
The antecedent of this book included the printers’ and publishers’ marks used in Hungary from the beginning until 1800. It was a natural objective to treat as a next step the devices of the 19th century but the continuous research revealed several new data regarding the previous centuries, too. Therefore in the first part of the catalogue we present the hitherto unknown printers’ and publishers’ marks from the 17th and 18th centuries with the main part from the 19th century following afterwards. We are able to extend the interval of use of several devices published earlier. We do not republish them with their image, we only give the list of corrected data. Besides the extension of the periods of usage we can confirm several new users of some of the notorious devices. Following the previously stated rules of publication we publish these as separate entries by the name of the new user. We also mention the devices used abroad by printers or booksellers whose activity was partially developed in Hungary. It is equally important to notice the afterlife abroad in the 19th century of an 18th century Hungarian device. The arbitrary end date of the period is impeding us to follow the development of the phenomena (such as the taste for Art Nouveau) which are only showing their first signs of life in the 19th century. However, the almost 300 printers’ and publishers’ marks presented here will hopefully disperse the pejorative preconception on the typographical culture of the 19th century and they will give an insight into the visual world and into the habits of using devices of the specialists of the Hungarian and European book trade.
