A kétkötetesre tervezett kiadvány az antik mágiáról szóló vallástörténeti forrás- és tanulmánygyűjtemény, amelynek célja, hogy összefoglalja az antik mágia ismert és kevésbé ismert formáit, forrásait, továbbá korabeli és mai tudományos értelmezéseit. Magyar nyelven ez lenne az első összegzés az antik mágiáról. A kötet érvényesíteni igyekszik a mágia kutatásában az utóbbi másfél évtizedben végbement szemléletbeli változásokat. Nem „a mágia” (meghatározhatatlannak bizonyult) esszenciájából indul ki, hanem egyfelől az adott antik kultúrában rekonstruálható mágiaértelmezésből, másfelől pedig a mágia szó mai köznyelvi használatából. Így minden forrás esetében mód nyílik arra, hogy bemutassuk az adott jelenségnek a saját kultúrájában elfoglalt pozícióját, egymásra reflektáló forrásoknál pedig e pozíciók lehetséges változatait. A bemutatandó kultúrák: a mezopotámiai, anatóliai, egyiptomi, zsidó, görög, itáliai, végül a mindezekből létrejövő transznacionális mágikus koiné a római császárkorban. Az anyag bemutatása mindkét kötetben a magica témakörei, azaz a különböző mágikus cselekvések, rítusok és aktusok típusai szerint történik. A történeti ív kezdetét az egyes kultúrák legrégebbi rétegei jelentik, a végét az arab hódítás. A két kötet elkészítésében a magyar ókortudomány számos elismert szakértője vett részt. Figyelembe véve a bennük feldolgozott hatalmas kulturális anyagot, a kiadvány túlzás nélkül nevezhető egyedülálló vállalkozásnak nemcsak a magyar, de a nemzetközi tudományos életben is.
Summary
The present work „By the Olympus: Magical Traditions in Ancient Mediterranean Cultures”, a general scientific work on ancient magic, is planned to be published in two volumes. Volume I contains a collection of sources (texts and ritual prescriptions as well as images) on ancient magic with short thematic introductions and commentaries; volume II presents a collection of scientific papers on several forms of ancient magic as well as essays on interpretations (both ancient and modern) of ancient magic. The book is a first attempt to give a general account on ancient magic in Hungarian language. Instead of seeing magic as a universal concept (the essence of which, as it seems, cannot be defined properly), the book focuses on specific interpretations of magic in different ancient cultures of the Mediterranean. The ancient cultures in focus are as follows: Mesopotamian, Anatolian, Egyptian, Jewish, Ancient Greek, Italian, and the magical koine, which was formed in the age of the Roman Empire. Both the ancient texts and the papers presented by the book are divided according the main types of magica, i.e. magical practices and rites. The book has been written by the most acclaimed Hungarian scholars working in the field of classical antiquity. Considering the vast amount of texts and topics dealt with in the book, its publication can be, without exaggeration, called unique also in the context of international scholarship on ancient magic.

Az elkészült mű a magyar ókortudomány egyik nagyszabású vállalkozása. Negyvenegy szerző közös munkájaként valósult meg - nem számítva itt a héróikus munkát végző olvasószerkesztő, Böröczki Tamás teljesítményét. A kétkötetes mű hét fejezetben ad átfogó képet a Mediterraneum ókori kultúráinak mágikus hagyományairól (Egyiptom, Mezopotámia, Anatólia, Itália, Hellas, a római császárkor és - csupán röviden - az antik mágia továbbélése az ókor után). Alapja az a csupán nemrégiben általánossá vált tudományos felismerés, hogy az antik mágia nem univerzális, a vallással szembeállítható fogalom. A könyv ezért mindegyik kultúrát a saját mértéke szerint mutatja be. A feladat aktualitását jelzi, hogy a szerkesztés során még mód nyílt az anyag jelentős mértékű kibővítésére, így a tervezett 700 oldal helyett a tanulmányok összterjedelme 1036 lett. A könyv bemutatójára az ünnep könyvhéten kerül sor.

The work completed is a grand enterprise of Hungarian classical studies. It has been realised as a joint work of forty one authors, not to mention the heroic accomplishment of the editor, Tamás Böröczki. The two-volume work offers a comprehensive picture of the magical traditions of the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean in seven chapters (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Italia, Hellas, the Roman Imperial Period, and – only briefly – the survival of ancient magic in post-antique times). The basis of the work is the recognition that has recently become generally accepted: ancient magic is not a universal concept that can be contrasted with religion. The book presents each culture to its own measure. The topicality of the subject is shown by the fact that even during the editing process the content was continuously widened so that the overall length of the work has become 1036 pages instead of the originally planned 700. The book will be presented during the Festive Book Week. We are grateful for the generous support of OTKA, without which this undertaking that may even arouse international interest, could never have been accomplished.
