A pályázat célja olyan anyagok és rendszerek vizsgálata, főleg elektronspin-rezonancia (ESR) spektroszkópia segítségével, amelyek spintronikai alkalmazásokban szerepet játszanak vagy potenciálisan szerepet játszhatnak a jövőben. A spintronika olyan „új elektronika”, amelyben az elektronok spinje kódolja és szállítja az információt a töltésük helyett. Az ESR nagyszerűen alkalmas az anyagban található elektronspinek kölcsönhatásainak és e kölcsönhatásoknak az elektronspinek dinamikájára vett hatásának a kimutatására, illetve ezekkel kapcsolatos fizikai mennyiségek (pl. kicserélődési kölcsönhatások, anizotrópia-energiák, relaxációs idők) pontos mérésére. E pályázat keretei között vizsgáltuk szerves töltésátviteli sókban mint alacsony dimenziós és frusztrált kvantum-spinrendszerek modelljeiben a spindinamikát; atomi simaságú vékonyréteg-(hetero)struktúrákban a szubsztrát, ill. a szomszédos vékonyrétegek felületi hatását a ferromágneses vékonyrétegekre; többféle tömbi multiferroikus anyagban a spinek közötti kölcsönhatást, a rendeződésüket és dinamikájukat; a Gd3N@C80 endohedrális fullerénben a Gd3+ spinek közötti kölcsönhatást és az egyedi Gd3N klasztereken megfigyelhető magnetoelektromos csatolást; és végül az aluldópolt kuprátokban a töltés-sűrűséghullám és szupravezetés koegzisztenciáját.

The aim of this project was to study such materials and systems, mostly by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, that play or may play a role in spintronics applications in the future. Spintronics is a "novel type of electronics" where information is encoded and carried by the spin of electrons instead of their charge. ESR is a great tool to detect interactions between and on electron spins, and to reveal the effect of these interactions on the spin dynamics, and to measure related physical quantities precisely, such as exchange interactions, anisotropy energies, relaxation times etc. Within the framework of this project, we investigated the spin dynamics in organic charge transfer salts as model systems of low dimensional and frustrated quantum spin systems; the effect of the substrate and the adjacent thin layers on ferromagnetic thin layers in atomically flat thin layer (hetero-)structures; the spin interactions, the ordering and dynamics of spins in several bulk multiferroics; the interaction between Gd3+ spins in the Gd3N@C80 endohedral fullerene, and the magetoelectric effect coupling within individual Gd3N clusters; and finally, the coexistence between charge density waves and superconductivity in underdoped cuprate superconductors.
