A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Metalloporphyrins are key compounds in nature, but their advantageous coordination, redox and photoinduced properties can also be exploited in artificial systems, e.g., in photocatalytic procedures. According to our preliminary results, water-soluble sitting-atop (SAT) metalloporphyrins containing large-diameter metal ions located out of the plane of the porphyrin ligand exhibit unique photochemistry: they undergo efficient ligand-to-metal charge-transfer processes following absorption of visible light. This photoactivity allows their utilization as catalysts in cyclic processes for synthesis of special chemicals or compounds storing solar energy. The main goal of the proposed project is the elucidation of the mechanism of the photoredox reactions of water-soluble SAT metalloporphyrins, and, on the basis of these fundamental results, establishment of catalytic systems utilizing these and also in-plane complexes in preparative or photochemical water-splitting procedures for future renewable energy technology and green chemistry.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?
Ebben a részben írja le röviden, hogy mi a kutatás segítségével megválaszolni kívánt probléma, mi a kutatás kiinduló hipotézise, milyen kérdéseket válaszolnak meg a kísérletek.

In the case of water-soluble sitting-atop (SAT) metalloporphyrins the photoinduced charge transfer from ligand to metal ion makes the charge separation more efficient, which allows their utilization as catalysts in cyclic processes for synthesis of chemicals suitable for conservation of light energy. In such a cycle, an appropriate electron donor and acceptor (reductant – oxidant) pair reacting with the primary products of the photoinduced LMCT process can regenerate the starting photocatalyst and lead to end-products for energy storage or as special chemicals. In an other concept of photoredox catalysis based on metalloporphyrin the starting metalloporphyrin is a normal (in-plane) complex, but it becomes of SAT type when the same metal centre is photoreduced to a lower oxidation state in the presence of suitable electron donor. This SAT complex of high reactivity can be oxidized by an appropriate electron acceptor in a thermal or light-driven way, regenerating the starting chromophore and giving an end-product or a reactive reductant, which can produce an energy storing final product. In order to achieve these goals, the following main questions should be addressed:
What is the mechanism of the photoredox reactions involving water-soluble SAT complexes?
How does the size and the electronic configuration of the metal centre and the structure of the porphyrin ligand influence the photochemistry of these complexes?
What types of electron donors and acceptors can be applied for realization of photocatalytic systems generating end-products to store energy?

Solar radiation is the most significant and accessible renewable energy source available on Earth. Besides, photochemical reactions offer the possibility to design procedures of very mild conditions with higher selectivity and efficiency for production of various compounds the synthesis of which via thermal reactions needs much more extreme circumstances, and, thus, higher cost. Further enhances the favourable features of photochemical technologies if one is able to apply water as solvent, making the technology environmentally benign. Since light is a clean energy source, aqueous photocatalytic systems driven by solar light can be good representatives of green chemistry.
Via utilization of water-soluble out-of-plane (SAT) metalloporphyrins, photocatalytic systems exploiting solar energy in the visible range can be realized. In-plane metalloporphyrins which can be photochemically reduced to also photoactive SAT complexes can also be applied in such catalytic systems, increasing the feasibility of this concept.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

Mind labilis (egyensúlyban létező) „out-of-plane” (OOP), mind kinetikailag inert „in-plane” metallo-porfirinek átfogó szerkezeti, képződési (kinetikai), fotofizikai és –kémiai vizsgálatát végeztük. Elméleti (DFT) számításokkal megállapítottuk, hogy – összhangban a lantanoida-kontrakció alapján várt tendenciával – az anionos 5,10,15,20-tetrakisz(4-szulfonatofenil)porfirinnel képezett lantanoida(III)-komplexek stabilitási állandói, mind az1:1, mind a 3:2 (fém:porfirin) összetétel esetében, csökkennek a fémion sugarának növekedtével – a fémion egyre nagyobb síkon kívüli távolsága miatt. Ugyanezen okból viszont a döntően irreverzibilis redoxi (MLCT) reakciót előidéző fotolízisük hatékonysága nő a kedvezményezett töltésszétválás miatt. A 3:2 összetételű biszporfirin komplex szerkezetére fotofizikai mérésekből következtettünk.

Comprehensive structural, kinetic, photophysical and –chemical study of both labile out-of-plane and kinetically inert in-plane metalloporphyrins was accomplished. DFT calculations established that – in accordance with the expectations due to the lanthanide contraction – the stability constants of lanthanide(III) complexes with 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin, for both 1:1 and 3:2 (metal:ligand) compositions, decrease upon increasing ionic radius of the metal center, because of the increasing out-of-plane distance of Ln(III). For the same reason, the efficiency of their photolysis causing predominantly irreversible redox (MLCT) reaction increases, due to the favored charge separation. The structure of the 3:2 bisporphyrin complexes was concluded from photophysical results. Photocatalytic cycles were realized by application of kinetically inert Mn(III), Co(III) and Ni(II) complexes with cationic 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin, which generated methylviologen radical cations in the presence of TEOA electrondonor. These radicals are applicable for hydrogen evolution from water. The cycle of the Mn(III) and Co(III) complexes was shown to significantly differ from that of the Ni(II) porphyrin; the previous ones transfer the electron tho the acceptor in two steps, while the latter species in a single one. Both anionic and (amphiphilic) cationic Mn(III) porphyrins were applied for oxygenation and oxidative degradation of organic compounds.
