A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

A kutatás célja a szupernóva-robbanásokhoz kötődő asztrofizikai folyamatok tanulmányozása, mélyebb megértése.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

Mekkora arányt képviselnek ebben a két fehér törpét tartalmazó "dupla-degenerált" rendszerek? Milyen objektumok lehetnek az Ib/c típusú robbanások progenitorai? Mi okozhatja az Ia-szupernóvák korai spektrumában a nagysebességű táguló rétegek megjelenését, lehet-e ezekből a progenitor rendszerre következtetni? Lehet-e az Ia-távolságmérési módszerek szisztematikus hibáit független módszerekkel csökkenteni? Mi robban fel a szuperfényes szupernóvák megjelenésekor, miből származik ezek extrém nagy fényessége?

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A tudományos értékek mellett változatlanul nagy hangsúlyt kívánunk fektetni a legújabb
módszerek, technikák, eredmények beépítésére és felhasználására az SZTE-n folyó oktató-kutató munkánkba, ezáltal a magyar
természettudományos szakemberképzés szívonalának megőrzésére, további emelésére.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

A szupernóvák felrobbanó csillagok. Munkánk során nemzetközi együttműködésben világszínvonalú földi távcsöveket, pl. a 9.2 m átmérőjű Hobby-Eberly teleszkópot, és űrtávcsövet kívánunk használni a minél komplettebb mérési adatok összegyűjtése érdekében. Nagy hangsúlyt fektetünk a modern kutatási módszerek, legújabb technikák és eredmények felhasználására és beépítésére a magyar természettudományos szakemberek képzésébe.
Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The aim of the proposed research is deeper understanding of the physical processes involved in supernova explosions. We intend to discover
new SNe in continuing the ROTSE Supernova Verification Project, as well as from spectroscopic data obtained by the HETDEX survey, contributing significantly to the increase of the statistical sample of the SN-rate in the z < 0.3 redshift range. We plan to monitor nearby, bright SNe both photometrically and spectroscopically in order to apply and improve the distance measurement techniques, and to study the physical processes taking place in the ejecta of Type Ia- and Ib/c SNe in order to reveal the nature of their progenitors. We devote particular attention to the investigation of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) which are brighter than -21 magnitude, the study of their
explosion mechanisms (e.g. pair-instability), the power source of their extreme brightness (e.g. interaction of ejecta with circumstellar
matter), and finding correlations between the physical characteristics of the members of this heterogeneous group.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The main questions of the proposed research are related to the global rate of SN explosions in the Universe, the physical state of the exploding progenitors, the physics of the explosion and subsequent ejecta expansion. Are exploding white dwarfs really the progenitors of Type Ia SNe? If yes, what is the fraction of "double degenerate" (two white dwarfs) binary systems among them? What kind of objects could be the progenitors of Type Ib/c SNe? What is the origin of the high-velocity layers in early spectra of Type Ia SNe, and what
they could tell us about the progenitor? How can the systematic errors of the Ia-based distance measurements be reduced by involving independent methods? What is the exploding object in SLSNe, and what powers their exceptionally bright light curves?

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The proposed project is pure basic research toward revealing and understanding extreme physical processes taking place in violent,
cataclysmic explosions in the Universe. Supernova research is a hot topic in the international research community, attracting particular attention for more than a decade. The SNe Ia-based distance scale plays leading role in the empirical discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe and the Dark Energy, which was recognized by the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011. The systematic uncertainties (up to 0.2 mag) plaguing the SN Ia distance scale could be further reduced only by deeper understanding of the physics of Ia explosions, uncovering the possible connections between the progenitors and the light curve properties. Besides Ia-s, the study of the physics of other types of SNe, especially the recently discovered SLSNe may also lead to interesting results that may be recognized by the community. We put strong emphasis on the implementation of new research methods and state-of-the-art techniques in the education at University of Szeged in order to preserve and improve the level of natural science education in Hungary.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

Supernovae are exploding stars. Because there are lots of different types of stars, their explosions can also be different. Astronomers have already pointed out that furtunately the Sun would never explode, but white dwarf stars only slightly more massive than the Sun are able to do that. These are the so-called Type Ia supernovae. Their most important (empirical) characteristics is that their brightness is so high that they can be observed from distances up to billions of light years, and also from the temporal variation of their light curves it is possible to infer their distances. This led to the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe, which was honored by the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011. The SN Ia-based distance measurement method, however, is still based on empirical knowledge that is not fully understood. The errors, uncertainties should be reduced, and this would require the deeper understaning of the physics of these explosions. Our research is focused on these problems. Beside Ia SNe, we intend to study other types of stellar explosion that are much less known. We devote particular attention to the recently discovered superluminous supernovae, where exotic physical processes may take place before, during and after the explosion. Together with our collaborating partners, mostly in the US, we plan to use world-class telescopes on the ground, such as the 9.2 m diameter Hobby-Eberly Telescope, as well as various space telescopes, in order to collect datasets in many wavelength bands. We put strong emphasis on the implementation of new research methods and state-of-the-art techniques in the education at University of Szeged.

Nemzetközi együttműködésben 3 új szupernóva (SN) felfedezésében és 13 új SN spektroszkópiai megerősítésében működtünk közre. Összesen 34 újonnan feltűnt SN-ról készítettünk fotometriai és spektroszkópiai méréseket hazai és külföldi távcsövekkel. Részt vettünk a közeli Ia SN-k maximum előtti színképeiben megfigyelhető nagysebességű vonalak tanulmányozásában. Kimutattuk, hogy az ionizált kalcium (Ca II) ilyen vonalai minden "normál" Ia-típusú SN színképében megjelennek, az ionizált szilicium (Si II) vonalaiban viszont ez a komponens jóval ritkábban jelentkezik. A SN 2010kg maximum előtti színképeiben kétszeresen ionizált szén (C III) jelenlétét mutattuk ki. A SN 2012cg fényváltozásában a tárcsillaggal történő kölcsönhatásra utaló jelet találtunk.

In an international collaboration we contributed to the discovery of 3 new supernovae (SNe) and the spectroscopic confirmation of 13 additional SNe during the project. We have collected spectroscopic and photometric data on 34 new SNe using telescopes in domestic as well as foreign institutions. We took part in the comprehensive analysis of the high-velocity features in the spectra of nearby Type Ia SNe. We found that high-velocity features of ionized calcium (Ca II) occur in all "normal" Ia SNe, while in the ionized Si (Si II) feature this component appear less frequently. We discovered the presence of doubly-ionized carbon (C III) in the pre-maximum spectra of SN 2010kg. In the early light curve of SN 2012cg we found signs for interaction with a binary companion star. These results may be important contributions to the resolution of the debate on the origin of Type Ia SNe. We measured distances to several SNe by applying various methods. By studying the light curves of super-luminous SNe we came to a conclusion that their excessive luminosity probably comes from collisional interaction with the circumstellar matter surrounding the explosion site. We pointed out the one of the transient objects, discovered by the ROTSE program earlier, was actually a tidal disruption event, i.e. a star torn apart by the gravitational force of a supermassive black hole.
