A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései szakemberek számára
Itt írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit a témában jártas szakember számára.

Mi a kutatás alapkérdése?

A papiruszok elolvasásával további információkat remélünk megtudni a temetőről (pl. datálás), a mesterekről, illetve a korabeli társadalomról.

Mi a kutatás jelentősége?

A szakkatalógus több szempontból is illeszkedik a jelenlegi nemzetközi kutatások trendjeihez. A görög-római kori halotti művészet kutatása az utóbbi évtizedekben különös lendületet vett, amit konferenciakötetek és monográfiák bizonyítanak. Azonban ezeknek a kutatásoknak a nagy része az egyiptomi és görög ikonográfiai elmeket egyaránt felhasználó tárgyakra koncentrál. A gamhudiakhoz hasonló, tradicionális egyiptomi stílusban díszített halotti tárgyak kutatása háttrébe szorul.

A kutatás összefoglalója, célkitűzései laikusok számára
Ebben a fejezetben írja le a kutatás fő célkitűzéseit alapműveltséggel rendelkező laikusok számára.

Summary
Summary of the research and its aims for experts
Describe the major aims of the research for experts.

The aim of the project is to fully publish 25 complete coffins, 4 fragmentary coffins, as well as cartonnage masks, cartonnage trappings, and painted linen shrouds originating from the Ptolemaic cemetery of Gamhud, excavated in 1907, and now in the possession of the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts. The resulting English language catalogue, accompanied by photographs and line drawings of the published artefacts, will also include a chapter on the history of the excavation and of the finds. A full stylistic study of the objects as well as chemical-technical analyses of the paint materials will be also conducted in order to identify artisan's groups/workhsops responsible for the production of the Gamhud funerary artefacts. From the Budapest cartonnages Demotic and Greek papyrus fragments were extracted during the 1930s, and there are still a few damaged but intact masks from which inscribed papyri will be extracted and prepared for study during this project. While some of the Demotic texts written on these papyri are published, study of the Greek texts has been started recently by a team of classical philologists. Though the results of the papyrological studies will be published elsewhere, György Németh, member of this team, also participates in the present project, and will study old as well as the newly extracted cartonnage papyri, searching for additional information on the cemetery and the contemporary society.

What is the major research question?
Describe here briefly the problem to be solved by the research, the starting hypothesis, and the questions addressed by the experiments.

The aim of the catalogue is not merely to make available to the scholarly community a very significant group of funerary artefacts for further study. In addition to this, a full list of the known as well as now lost but documented Gamhud objects will also be established on the basis of investigations in both Hungarian archives and collections outside Hungary. It is also hoped that additional, so far unknown Gamhud objects will also be identified. Furthermore, such a large amount of artifacts originating from a single site is statistically representative and allows for a stylistic study and chemical-technical analysis of the paints used in their decoration to isolate artisan's hands and groups responsible for their production. The stylistic and technical studies are expected to provide various information on the working methods and organisation of these groups, as well as on the skills of the artisans. Preliminary observations suggest that the Gamhud coffins and mummy trappings were not produced by a single workshop but can be attributed to a number of artisans' groups. Iconographic parallels and similarities in artisans' hands may point to connections between the Gamhud artisans, as well as their ties to other workshops in the larger vicinity of Gamhud. It is hoped that the study of the papyri will yield more information and widen our knowledge on the Gamhud cemetery and on the contemporary society. The new papyri are of particularly importance: there is hope that they can be attributed to specific coffins, if so, it will be possible to date more precisely a number of the Gamhud coffins.

What is the significance of the research?
Describe the new perspectives opened by the results achieved, including the scientific basics of potential societal applications. Please describe the unique strengths of your proposal in comparison to your domestic and international competitors in the given field.

The publication of the material is significant in itself: it is not very common to publish Ptolemaic coffins originating from the same site in a single volume. A large majority of Ptolemaic funerary artefacts can only be studied in museum store rooms. The catalogue matches current research trends in Egyptology and in the study of Graeco-Roman Egypt. The 1990s and 2000s have seen a growing interest in the study of Graeco-Roman funerary art, which is indicated by an increase in the number of conference volumes and monographs. Yet these studies mainly focus on those funerary objects displaying both Greek and Egyptian elements; funerary artefacts produced in a traditional, purely Egyptian style, such as the Gamhud coffins and mummy trappings, are paid less attention. The Gamhud catalogue will contribute to draw scholarly attention on the latter group of objects. The identification of artisans' hands and workshops on the basis of comparative stylistic study of the decoration, combined with chemical-technical analyses, is among the recent methods used in Egyptological art history. However, such studies mainly concentrate on New Kingdom tomb painting. The application of this method in the study of coffins is not widespread and certainly requires adjustments. The analysis of the Gamhud coffins may contribute to develop such an adjusted method. The study of the papyri will provide an example of cooperation between Egyptology and Classical Philology. In addition to the English language catalogue, the results of the research will be summarised in a Hungarian language volume, written for the general public and to be published in the series 'Egyiptomi Régiségek' (Egyptian Antiquities) started in 2011.

Summary and aims of the research for the public
Describe here the major aims of the research for an audience with average background information. This summary is especially important for NRDI Office in order to inform decision-makers, media, and others.

The Ptolemaic cemetery of Gamhud was excavated in 1907 by an Austro-Hungarian expedition. A considerable part of the finds (coffins and mummy trappings) are today kep in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest. The aim of the present project is to fully publish this material in an English language catalogue. The description of the objects will be accompanied by photographs and line drawings. The stylistic study of the objects as well as chemical-technical analyses of the paint materials used in their decoration will also be conducted in order to obtain various information on the artisans responsible for the production of the Gamhud funerary artefacts, i.e. on their skills, working methods and organisation. The connections of the Gamhud artisans with other funerary centres in the larger vicinity of Gamhud will also be investigated. Texts written on the papyri extracted from the cartonnages (one type of the mummy trappings) will provide information on the dating of the coffins and on the contemporary society. By the publication of the catalogue the most significant yet so far unstudied group of Egyptian artefacts kept in a Hungarian collection will be made available to the scholarly community. In addition, the results will also be published for the general public in a shorter Hungarian language volume.

Final report

Results in English
Over the course of the project we completed the investigation of the coffins and mummy trappings from Gamhud, as well as the study of some Greek papyri originating from the cartonnages. We prepared for publication the manuscript of a fully illustrated catalogue, including a detailed Egyptological and interdisciplinary discussion. The archive records concerning the material were studied; photographs and drawings of the objects to be published were produced. On the basis of the archive data and iconographic study, it was possible to match coffins and mummy trappings which had been preserved separately since the opening of the coffins in the 1930s. Part of the mummy trappings, which had not undergone conservation treatment during that project and had not been available for study until now, were conserved. Technical analyses of the binding and painting materials were conducted, and the results were compared with those of the Egyptological study. The research yielded a trove of new results, contributing to our understanding of Ptolemaic funerary iconography and industry. These results concern the iconographic traditions/variants used by the artisans responsible for the production of the coffins and mummy trappings, the reltionships and cooperation between these artisans, their organisation, as well as the place of the funerary material from Gamhud in the broader iconographic context. Study of the texts of the Greek papyri also provided new data concerning Ptolemaic economy.
